Re: Pentax is considering releasing a new film camera

2022-12-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I'm somewhat abashed to see people who can list all of their cameras. I know I
have six digital cameras, not counting iPhone and iPad(s) cameras. But film
cameras … sheesh, every time i open a drawer or a box I find a couple more. I
don't know how many I have at all, but it's a number well past 30. At a quick
glance, I counted nine Polaroid cameras alone…!

The accretion over time thing is at work. Many of these cameras I've acquired
and used over decades of time. A few more than most, but such are the vagaries
of whimsy.

Many/most film cameras are available for dirt cheap prices now. But that
doesn't mean that any person who has gotten interested in using a film camera
shouldn't have the option to buy a fine new film camera from a Leica, a Pentax,
and/or some other quality brand name. As long as the manufacturer can make a
profit commensurate with their investment to go into production, there's no
downside to it. I'd like a new Leica M6 or M-A: I certainly don't need one, but
it's nice to have the option available.

The Leica M4-2 is loaded … Perhaps I'll load a Polaroid SX-70 and a Minox B
too... and the Voigtländer Perkeo II as well. And then see how long it takes me
to make 92 exposures on film. :)

RE: Pentax is considering releasing a new film camera

2022-12-20 Thread jcoyle
I have:
Asahi Pentax SV
Spotmatic x 2
Spotmatic II
Spotmatic ES
Pentax KM
Pentax ME
Pentax MZ-S
Fed 4L - Russian Leica IIIc copy
Rolleicord

All work, and I regularly use the MZ-S: I am not sure about buying a new model,
I'm sufficiently ancient that these will see me out
before they pack it in, I think.
It would be good to know that the MZ-S, particularly, might be able to be fully
serviced, as it is a great camera.

I believe I have:
2 MX (one - my first K-mount - bought new; one black bought much later as a
spare).
  ME Super
  Super Program
  PZ-1P
  MZ-S

and a variety of old lenses, teleconverters, winders; I even have an MX motor
drive.

I also have an airtight box in my freezer with a couple of dozen rolls of old
film that have been there 20+ years (even including a
roll or two of Royal Gold 25, IIRC)

Despite that collection I, too, have no desire to go back to shooting any more
film.

RE: lens coating maintenance

2022-12-20 Thread jcoyle
I saw a recent program on TV where a 100-year old telescope was restored, and
the restorer used methylated spirits on the (glass)
lens to bring them back to what looked like pristine quality.
I intend to try it on an old 500/8 telescopic lens I own...

I can't count to 10: I found in my cupboard 2 MX, 1 K2, 1 P30, 1 P30T, 2

Re: Pentax is considering releasing a new film camera

2022-12-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Or, like Leica's reissue of the classic M6 film camera, it is addressing the
new audience of young and old photographers who have expressed that they want
to shoot film and want to buy a quality film camera new, not just a used (and
now in most cases ancient) one.

I applaud Leica for doing this, and I applaud Pentax for the same reason should
they do it. Why not? If they have an audience willing to buy … and you, the
Pentax faithful who have scads of good Pentax film equipment already, are not
in that audience … and can make a profit doing it, why not?

I, for one, have never stopped shooting with a film camera although most of my
photography is done with digital capture since the early '00s. Film images look
different from digital images, and it's up to a photographer to decide what
look to work with and what process from capture to finished photograph suits
their needs best.

My 1978 Leica M4-2 is loaded and ready to go with a fresh roll of Ferrania P30
in it. :)

So many questions - and I have so few answers. The people who are keenly
interested in the personal interactions within the House of Windsor tend to be
also interested in such vacuities as "Which celebrity has lost weight this
week?" or "Should I buy a yellow car instead of a grey one?" I can't really
answer for them.

In common with the rest of the world the profound disruptions caused by,
amongst others, the aggression in Ukraine, Brexit and the continuing increase
in inflation are far more important and attention-grabbing than a change of
head of state. And that includes all the recent political shenanigans.
Constitutional monarchy seems to work, wherever it is employed, so I (for one)
am happy that it continues. I just wish we had politicians (and voters)
who were as competent.

As far as I can tell, this does not affect the Scots in any way. The
isolationists carry on blaming the English for every little thing wrong with
their personal view of the world, as has been their wont for the last four
hundred years. Everybody else gets on with rubbing along together. Some
people just like to fight. It must be pretty unpleasant for those who are
nearby.
