Re: Did anyone get Aurora photos?
I had beautiful clear skies. Went out about 10:00pm, quick iPhone snap to verify that the green glow was not my imagination. Set up tripod, did a series of long and long]ger exposures… Zip. Nada. Well, in one frame I can see the edge of the light show down low on the horizon, mostly covered by intervening trees and structures. But the iPhone snap was decent. Clouds are building up, I’ll go back out tonight, both phone and real camera again. And hopefully I’ll catch the show … Stan > On May 12, 2024, at 4:45 PM, Rick Womer wrote: > > Philly is a bit far south, and it was cloudy and wet (and still is). > > Rick > > On Sun, May 12, 2024 at 4:32 PM Steve Cottrell wrote: > >> Zillions of pics on Twitter, and of course I was in the land of Nod when >> it all happened :-) >> >> Saturday night I was driving home from some work at a football match, and >> too zonked to stop and stare at the sky. >> >> What annoys me is that there’s loads of photos by people who say ‘ooh yeah >> you have to use a long exposure on a camera to really see it well, can be >> tricky with the naked eye…’ well I wanna see it blaring at me with my own >> eyeballs so sod that!! >> >> :-) >> >> Cotty >> >>> On 12 May 2024, at 01:06, Larry Colen wrote: >>> >>> I’m afraid that even if they’re visible this far south, I can’t get to >> anyplace dark enough >> >> >> -- >> %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List >> To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net >> to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and >> follow the directions. > -- > %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List > To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Philly is a bit far south, and it was cloudy and wet (and still is). Re: OT. OM-5 first impressions
Lar I use an Olympus OM-D EM1 mark II as a video camera (only) but in conjunction with a very bright Fotga external monitor. The IBIS is excellent and one of the reason I got it. That and it was pretty cheap so reasonably easy to replace if it goes wrong or gets damaged. I use it on conjunction with manual lenses and I have the focus peaking set on permanently. Maybe your still focus peaking can be enabled in the menus on the OM5 somewhere? It’s essential for my eyes. I was sleeping, but many of my Metro Detroit friends got good cell phone pics on Friday night. Re: PESO: Bellbird
So there is no problem with camera shake. I still use the Jack Davis formula TAV, 1/2000sec, f8 with my 170-500 for H/H at full stretch but still, like you, I find the AF screw drive somewhat lacking & seldom manage successful quick grabs. Too much glass for quick focus. The new PLM's are greased lightning by comparison but my budget won't stretch that far. I get a success rate of only about 10% shooting aerobatics. Thank goodness for digital. My 55-300 behaves much better. Alan C On 12-May-24 12:09 AM, David Mann wrote: On May 12, 2024, at 5:56 AM, Alan Cole wrote: Dave, what was the shutter speed? 1/3000th. In some ways I'm ideally situated now: Good northerly location (Scotland) and far away from any significant light pollution. AND the weather has been pretty clear - unusual for Scotland. But we've been doing long hikes during the day and I've been too exhausted to stay up until it's dark enough to look for auroras (which is made no easier by the fact that sunset comes *very* late at these latitudes). -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

If you like the OM-1, then I suspect the OM-5 would be just fine for you. I also suspect that a lot of things that take the shine off for me aren’t things that come up for you as often. My shooting needs are generally very different from yours. If you don’t do a lot of bracketing of raw files, then my complaints there are totally irrelevant, and even so may not be something that bothers you. > > I'll be interested to see how you feel about it after a week or two. This afternoon/evening we bopped by the Getty to play with cameras. As things got darker I ended up needing to lean on the ISO a bit harder, it’ll be interesting to see how the images turn out. On a quick look on my laptop, they seem to be usable at 6400. I was shooting with the 25/0.95 I bought from Boris and focus peaking went away in Manual Focus mode. I put one of the autofocus lenses on, and focus peaking worked fine. So, for some reason, manual focus assist does not work on manual focus only lenses. As we were leaving, I saw someone else waiting for the tram with a small retro looking camera, thinking that it might be another Oly I took a closer look, it was a Pentax MX! I did tell him about PDML, he found the camera in his dad’s attic and is interested in learning more about photography in general and the camera in particular. > -- > %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List > To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net > to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow > the directions. > -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from ret13est -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
