tele extenders
To those that have used a 2X tele-extender with a telephoto (200 or 300mm), what do you seem to find to be the compromising element...loss of sharpness, contrast, etc? When I used a 300/4A* with a 2x-AS I was always impressed with its results. But now with another system I'm getting a slightly diffused image with a 70-200/2.8 and 2xEF, more so than I would have expected.

Collin, Long discontinued item so I assume you are getting it cheap. I have one at home; started using it on SCSI, and now USB on a laptop, having to revert back to OS9 to use, though. As far as scanning, I mostly use it for transparencies using the optional lid (up to 4x5). For the price, I think it works pretty well. Pentax to Can-none
As with others, I was a long-time Pentax user. When the digital bug bit, I had used a Canon D30 and D60 through work, but kept waiting for Pentax to come out with one to buy for personal use. When I grew tired of waiting, I sold most of my Pentax 'collection' and bought a 10D and 70-200/2.8, and liked what I was getting. I bought in May, and soon after the istD became available, my 10D body suddenly wouldn't start upnothing. It has been at Canon Repair since, get this, Oct. 8 2003, and no word of when I'll get it back. Not that I want to debate 10D vs. istD here, but needless to say I would gladly give up the 100-3200ASA, Litho battery, etc. for a camera that may be prone to a bad pixel here or there.
