Holiday photos
Part 1 of our UK trip is done and I've uploaded a rough cut of photos. Since this is a walking holiday I left the full-frame kit at home and these were all taken with the K-3ii and either the DA 16-50/2.8 or the 55-300WR (both really superb lenses). These are all from the Isle of Islay in Scotland (and, yes, I did a good amount of Scotch tasting along the way). https://www.flickr.com/photos/166715344@N04/albums/72177720316943057/ More than a few times I've found myself wishing I'd brought the DA 12-24 (if Pentax were to make a weather sealed version of this lens I'd buy it in a heartbeat). Next: Getting on a train to Ulverston in the lake district for the serious walking stage of our trip. -- Mark Roberts - Photography and Multimedia www.robertstech.com 617-276-7369 -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: Did anyone get Aurora photos?
In some ways I'm ideally situated now: Good northerly location (Scotland) and far away from any significant light pollution. AND the weather has been pretty clear - unusual for Scotland. But we've been doing long hikes during the day and I've been too exhausted to stay up until it's dark enough to look for auroras (which is made no easier by the fact that sunset comes *very* late at these latitudes). -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

FS Friday: K-5 and DA-L 55-300
In light of my recent gear acquisition posts, it should come as no surprise that I'm selling the gear I'm replacing. Got myself a new lens
Not content with buying a camera recently (a lovely K-5ii), I decided this week to treat myself to a new lens. I haven't bought a lens since... 2018, I think (it was the 28-105 for the K-1). Anyway, I just bought another travel lens for the trips we have planned for the summer: walking England and Scotland in May and bicycling Belgium August. With the outdoorsiness factor weighing heavily I went for a weather-sealed lens, the DA 55-300. I already had the older, non-weather-sealed budget version but the new one is very much nicer. In-lens focusing motor is silent and very quick. Build quality seems excellent. I'll take some test shots soon to check out the optics but if it's as good as the older one I'lkl be very happy indeed. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- %(real_name)s Pentax-Discuss Mail List To unsubscribe send an email to pdml-le...@pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I'm not interested in adding to either my shooting workflow (taking notes and getting left behind by the rest of the group) or my post-processing workflow (synching up with a separate file of GPS data). And I certainly don't want any extra dongles or anything to carry with me. A GPS-enabled camera is the simplest solution. I'll be getting a K-3ii. BTW: I just noticed that the K-3ii has dual SD card slots! Bravo! Another feature made to order for me. Looks as though we will have a UK PDML meet-up in the coming week, albeit a small one. Lisa and I will be over for a couple of weeks, mainly to finish the last leg of the Pennine Way walk, but we're going to meet with Bob W in Worthing on Wednesday the 10th. Then we're off to the North! Most of our walk will be in Northumberland but it keeps dodging across the Stots border (follows Hadrian's wall for a fair bit) and finishes up in Scotland. I'll show it to my Digital Photography I class tomorrow (coincidentally, "Black & White" was the assignment for this week). It'll be interesting to see what they make of it and if there's any interest (I won't mention the price because that alone will kill any interest from students). My thoughts tend in two directions: The disadvantage is being unable to really control spectral response. Since they've actually done away with the RGB filters over the pixels you're stuck with the spectral response you're given (other than by using traditional colored B filters): There'll be no adjusting the response curve in post the way you can with RGB images. The advantages are, well first of all you *will* be able to use traditional colored B filters (the results when they're put over RGB sensors are weird). You'll also get higher sensitivity (no filters over the pixels) and lower noise (and no chroma noise at all!) Theoretically, you should also get finer detail, though with over 25 megapixels crammed into an APS-C area I'm not sure how evident that will be. I'll wait for real-life tests but I imagine you'll need the highest resolution lenses to see much difference.

Re: Use of GPS in cameras?
I find GPS invaluable for travel photography, both for identifying subject matter (OK, that's a 15th-century church in Oxfordshire, but *which* 15th-century church?) and for tracking locations on various hikes through the White Mountains, the Blue Ridge, the Yorkshire Moors, etc. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

You can easily upload to Instagram from a desktop computer by using either Chrome or Opera and switching into Developer Mode. (I use Opera and the menu access is Menu > Developer > Developer Tools, then pick a phone to emulate.) The trick is to format your images to one of the three accepted sizes: square 1080px x 1080px, panoramic 1080px x 608px, or 8x10 1080px x 1350px. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
