I spent way too much time finding various brands of "anchors" compatible

Re: OT: Fancy Camera Strap

2023-01-30 Thread Richard Dell
Measured mine
set at about 50" or so,
with an additional 25" available,
13" in the strap, and 6" in each camera attachment.
(quick releases similar to the Tamron's and others)
... truly extraordinary max. of 75".

I tend to use compatible quick release buckle (maybe Tamron)
camera attachment straps for extra bodies, but those are shorter
than what measurement says is 16" max for these
now no-name straps (label says StrapToIt)

I went to the exhibit in Atlanta last year.

It was well worth attending, I wished I had more time (spouse was not as
fascinated).
Being surrounded by the images, with computerized animations and transitions
was fair overwhelming, I though. An example of the animation as farm fields
with the tractors actually moving across the field,

One thing, if you go to one, is to be sure to do the add-on 3D goggle session,
very interesting feeling like you are alive (with being able to look around,
swiveling your head) in a fictional village where Van Gogh might have painted
over a half dozen of his paintings.

The whole exhibit was not timed, so no rush.

Re: Attn: Virus from "photo.net": do NOT open attachments in messages from Photo.net

2017-09-21 Thread Richard Dell

Good advice for almost all emails ...
never open an attachment unless you absolutely know it is ok,
particularly .zip, .exe, .docx, .xlsx, or any of the types that can
contain macros.

If it is an extension that likely does not contain executable code, like
.jpg or such,

I'll usually save it to my hard drive first, before opening ..
then the anti-virus software will be sure to take a look at it.

I received two e-mails from photo.net this night/morning - a few hours

1. I don't have a premium account, and I didn't pay anything, so, the

2. Indeed, the email came from an address (and via server) in Finland,

that confirmed my concerns.

3. Both messages have an attachment.

Re: Camera mount brackets (for quick orientation flipping)?

2016-10-01 Thread Richard Dell

I use and leave a Stroboframe 300-115 Vertaflip PHD Camera Platform
mounted to the heavy duty tripod I carry in the car .
Might be a bit much for a monopod ..
I've been aiming to getting L brackets to use more portably.

Hi All,

I asked this question in a different thread, - but it might not be
seen there, so, I would ask it in its own thread.

I am considering buying a monopod and some type of device that allows
quick and easy flipping between horizontal and vertical positions.
Larry has suggested a ball head as those typically have a slit that
allow to tilt the camera by 90 degrees.
That is a possibility, but: 1. I would be overpaying for the
functionality I don't need. (Or maybe I am not looking at the right
ball heads? Are there any inexpensive ones?)

and
2. A ball head has more degrees of freedom, which complicates the
situation when I need just to flip it from landscape to portrait
orientation.

I've been thinking about something that is similar to the brackets
used for mounting flashes, but just for the camera. Such a "bracket"
would flip between just two orientations (on a tripod or monopod).

Do such devices exist? Any pointers?

Thank you!

Igor

I think the 01F is a "flat field" converter for what its worth ...
I suspect sold as a package with some lenses

I am not familiar with other Adaptall 2 TCs,

Re: Question? Battery Grip for K-5II etc.

2016-01-28 Thread Richard Dell

I ended up getting both the Pentax grip and a third party ... the
battery trays interchange nicely,
and my idea was to use the third party "grip" as a charging adapter for
a set of 6 NiMH batteries

in the AA tray.

I was, however, unhappy with the tray NiMH/internal Lithium mixture, the
K-5 seemed to to often switch to internal
too quickly, perhaps too much voltage drop in the connections. I did
not get the expected battery life.

So now I exclusively use the Lithium tray. It is nice having the
internal battery
as a backup ... no fumbling with batteries in the field until you have a
chance.

I do carry the AA tray loaded with AA lithiums as a backup in my backpack.

Regarding the third party grips ... as I recall there were what looked
like two different types,
the type I got was almost identical to the Pentax, except for the o-ring
seals.
See the post by LeDave at

Re: After-market battery charger

Sure does ... I tend to use the Pentax batteries mixed
with the Wasabis, as they have somewhat more capacity.
The Pentax within the body, and the Wasabi in the grip,

Does anyone on the list have experience using the Watson charger,

Re: K-5/BG-4 Grip Repair

2014-10-21 Thread Richard Dell
in the camera and brand new AAs in the grip, the camera
reports near or full depletion, however it appears to remain usable if
I select ?Body First.??? I reports depleted and dies rapidly if I set
 the camera to ?Grip First.?

I have tested the grip on my K-7 with no problems so I assume it is
 the camera.

The problem started suddenly on a recent trip where I had used the
camera/grip combo for several days with no issues.

Sadly Eric Hendrickson doesn?t do digital bodies and CRIS no longer
services Pentax.? Having read recent reports of extended repair delays
and mixed results at Precision Camera, I am hesitant to go that route
as long as my camera is usable.

Any advice on my K-5/BG-4 issues, other repair options or additional
experience with Precision Camera would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Interesting emails on SanDisk SDHC Card Storage Case

2014-07-01 Thread Richard Dell

As I recall, the last microSD card I bought from Amazon with their
frustration free packaging (apparently their slang for minimalist)
took me 15 minutes to find in the box ... still of course shipped
in a small cardboard box like 3x5x7 or so.

Better are the eBay cards and such, thrown into a bubble envelope usually.
Not much protection, but the cards probably don't need it.

I would suspect costs would be higher ...
to cover the lossage of product in warehousing,
and other losses due to small size.

Consider the excessive Costco packaging .. they wouldn't ask for it if
it was not economically to Costco's advantage.

Sharing info on the topic of providing a small storage case for
SanDisk SDHC Card through cost reduction of the giant packaging fot

The official reply from sanDisk - see last mail - makes me think it
was sent to a village moron with no education or intelligence - why
SanDisk uses a giant sized costly packaging measuring 15 x 10 inches
for a tiny card. Read on:-

My 1st email:-
Dear Sir, yesterday the 22nd of June 2014 my son bought me a SanDisk
32 GB Ultra SDHC Card costing some CAD 31 for my DSLR from COSTCO. My
son’s name is xx x and his Costco membership # is
xx111813.
The tiny card came in a HUGE 26 x 38 cm packing which would have
costed quite a large amount of money.
But alas there was no Card Storage Plastic Case or Pouch included??
How do we safely store the bare card??
What a SHAME that a big and famous company like SanDisk should package
their Card in a huge and expensive contraption, yet leave out a little
box to hold the card safely.
That 26 x 38 cm packaging is a JOKE for a tiny SDHC Card.
I own some 5 #s high speed SanDisk Cards which all came in their
separate cases or pouches.
The card cases also come in handy for inserting small notes such as
“photos to be downloaded”, “format and use card”, or “ready for use”.
I will now have to consider purchasing other card brands for my DSLRs.
Thank you for your insensitivity and corporate greed.

Reply from sanDisk:-

My name is Brad and I am one of the supervisor with SanDisk technical
support. I thank you for your valued feedback, this helps us to
improve our customer service. I understand that your issue has not
been addressed as per your satisfaction and I am sorry for the
inconvenience caused to you. I would like to inform you that we
provide plastic cases only with the Extreme line cards not with the
Ultra cards. I would suggest you to to buy the cases from any online
or retail stores. You can do a search for Jewel cases and you may find
them on Amazon's website. I will surely share your feedback with the
marketing team. Please reply if you need any further assistance from
sandisk.

My 2nd email as a reply:-
Hello Brad, thank you for the fast response.
I am afraid you have missed the point totally:-
a) What was the need for a huge and expensive packaging?
My God! a package size of 26 x 38 cm for a tiny card, when
a smaller 10 x 150 cm packaging could have been sufficient,
and the money saved used for a plastic case.
b) A giant packaging just eats up more storage space at your
warehouse and shelf space at the Retailer.
Who pays for all this wasted money? The Consumer Mr. Brad??
c) Please note other manufacturers of high speed Class 10 Cards
do provide cases.
In fact all my older SanDisk cards came with black pouches or
plastic cases. Now I don't remember whether they were Ultra
or Extreme cards - all semantics and a bad excuse wrt to Sl. a)
 b) above.
Thanks for pointing me to Amazon and more money.

Reply from SanDisk:-
Thanks for emailing SanDisk Technical Support. It is our goal to make

product.
I appreciate your quick response. I would like to inform you that the
packaging size is 26 x 38 cm because of the information that has to be
there on the packaging. The terms and conditions and the policy
information for the customers has to be there on the packaging. We no
longer provides the plastic cases now with the Ultra cards. If you
need the cases then you can buy them from any retail or online stores.
Please reply if you need any further assistance from sandisk on this
issue.

I give up.

Thanks for reading.

Dan,

I love the 21mm Limited ... it was my first fixed focal length AF lens
for my ole K7,
chosen to gain focus speed in family grab shots .. it's pouch hangs from
my camera strap
most of the time so I don't forget it. Wide enough that I don't have to

in my framing when the grandchildren are playing.

I was looking at the 21mm f3.2 DA AL Limited, the 35mm f2.8 macro
limited and the 40mm f2.8 DA limited. Which have people here found
the most useful and versatile? Which (if any) do you prefer for image
quality?

I am concerned that the 40 might be too close to the 50 I use now. Is
it significantly better in image quality?

I have the 100 macro; will the 35 macro allow me to do things I can't
with the 100? I know the 35 limited is a lot more modern, but I
really have no complaints about the 100 macro, aside from the shaky
hand behind the lens.

Any thoughts and recommendations will be greatly appreciated.
