Re: Carrying a camera on a long walk

2013-08-07 Thread Steffen Zahn
My wife recently bought the NEX 6LB with the 16-50mm lens. That is really
lightweight and small, the lens contracts by 2cm in the transport position. The
sensor is APS-C, it has an electronic viewfinder and at least the out-of-camera
jpegs look excellent. And the LCD can be flipped to shoot from the hip by
looking down at the LCD.

My 'easy carry for travel' fixed lens camera is the Leica X2, which is a bit
on the expensive side, but there are several other cameras in the class
(Nikon A, Fuji X100, Ricoh GR, etc) that are also good choices. There are
deals available on the Ricoh GXR and A16 24-85mm zoom camera unit too, a fine

Picking a single prime lens camera is, I find, a useful exercise in lack of

competing .. The camera stopped working. I had shot a couple dozen frames at
the meet already, no problem. But, then, it just stopped. Wouldn't focus,
wouldn't shoot, no matter the on/off, in/out/switch of battery, lens switch,
shooting mode change, etc. it turns on, but when you press the shutter, it
freezes, and the LCD says battery depleted (though it is not). Then, it
won't do anything. That was yesterday, same story this morning.

So. Stuff happens, I get that. Still, I'm finding it hard to imagine a
worse betrayal of gear right now. I have been shooting these guys all year,
they have had a great run, so to speak, since the winter season. This was
their last race together. This was a big deal. They ran their best time
ever, finished in the top 10. And I have no photos.

Not sure if this is a warranty repair or not... Especially since the mirror
flop fix of last year... Will check my paperwork when I get home. Wondering
if I have reached the point of throwing good money after bad, at least on
 this camera.

Maybe you'll be hearing from me again on for sale Friday

The DA 40mm XS works very well on the full frame 35mm film body! There is
noticeable light falloff at f2.8, noticeable enough to be objectionable, but
it is greatly diminished at f4 and more or less gone at f5.6 and beyond. For

The units are also compatible with Canon cameras so I expect their
support for Pentax may only be partial...
TTL / P-TTL is not supported.

This low speed makes them of little use.
I am still not sure if there is something I could try to make them

Hello,

my book has already arrived here in Germany. I have no idea how that is
even possible when according to blurbs email it was sent out yesterday.
Unless the book is really printed somewhere in Europe.

And the book is great.

I paid 41.90 for the book, plus 3.29 taxes plus 5.17 shipping. The
shipping in Europe is supposed to be some kind of flat-rate. All values
in EURO.

Hello,

for Linux I can recommend RawTherapee for working on raw images,
combined with digiKam as the management solution for images (including
tags and upload-plugins for various online services).

Really? Is there no AF indicator in the finder of the K-x? Even my K100D
has that, which is also an entry level camera.

Re: eBay Store - foto-tip: Samyang MF lenses

2009-11-13 Thread Steffen Zahn
Hello,

users of the 85mm Samyang lens gather at the Flickr group
http://www.flickr.com/groups/vivitar_85_14/ , where you can find
discussions and example images. The lens is sold under a lot of
different brand names. I have one myself under the brand name Walimex,
it is good even at F1.4, but of course it is without auto focus.

Re: K10 problem

2009-09-08 Thread Steffen Zahn
This can also be caused by aperture blades that temporarily get stuck. I
have a lens that has this problem, and when used in A-position of the
aperture ring, the blades will close a bit more with successive
pictures. One can see this when looking through the front side of the
lens while taking pictures. The correct operation is when the blades
completely open up after each picture.

John Francis schrieb:
When I had problems like this (many years ago, with my PZ-1p), the
problem was a borderline contact between the lens and the camera.
Hold the lens just the wrong way and the A pin didn't make contact,
so the camera took a shot or two with the aperture set to f/32 (I
usually shoot in Tv mode, so the shutter speed was fixed as well).

It took me a while to figure this out, but nowadays it should be
much, much easier - look at the EXIF entries to see what has changed.
If the A contact is suspect the lens information code will switch.
If, on the other hand, all the EXIF value look reasonable you may have
a lens that is misbehaving (a sticky iris, perhaps).

 Subject: K10 problem

My K10 has started taking shots that are very dark followed by some
shots that are ok then there are a few that are very dark followed by
more that are ok. So far the bad shots have all been occurring in
groups of 3. I don't know if that is just coincidence or not. In 1
group of bad shots 2 were dark and 1 was so light it was difficult to
 make anything out.

A few months ago my K100 started rebooting occasionally. Pentax quoted
$549 to replace the circuit board. Does the K10 problem sound like it
could be as serious, and expensive?

Re: Pentax SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Lens or Pentax SMC DA Lens - 40 mm - F/2.8

2009-02-25 Thread Steffen Zahn
I think this discussion so far abstracts to much from the image quality
of both lenses when used wide open. I have the FA 50/1.4 and below F2.0
it is very soft and lacks details, not to mention the color fringing on
high contrast transition areas in the image. You need to go to F2.4 to
have good sharpness in the center, and if you need sharpness to the
border, you have to use F2.8 or F3.5.

I don't have the 40mm, but if I read test results it looks like the 40mm
delivers a good resolution wide open.
