Where to find Polaroid stuff (in EU if possible) ??

However, I owuld like to know where I could get films at reasonable

be that hard to find.
Film seems to be sold at awful price on Ebay seems Pola announced they

Re: Pentax pro service in Europe?

2008-07-21 Thread Thibouille
Last time I had to have a repair in Belgium, I droped it at Pentax
Belgium (it speeds up things a little bit) and got it back in 1.5-2
weeks.
Nothing more, I'm sure. But it was a body repair (ist-d) and not a
lens repair. Lens repair might be trickier.

AFAIK ther's no Pro Service from Pentax (yet) in Europe. But they set
it up in the US and probably will expand to Europe when the US part
will be fully working and little problems solved.

Rumours, rumours...

2008-07-08 Thread Thibouille
Please don't tell me you don't care, subject is clear so if you don't
want to know or discuss anything, don't read !

* BEGIN RUMOUR NEWS *

In the current state of things (if that can be said for rumours),
Pentax is beleived to introduce at least one new camera around
Photokina, possibly two.
There're a no details about this/these camera(s) but it should be
fairly easy to speculate if anyone wants to.

* if one camera - budget camera (e.g. K1000D) or high end (K1D/K5D)...
* if two camera, seems clear it would be those two except if Pentax
feels they need to upgrade K200D or K20D but it seems doubtful to me.

* END RUMOUR NEWS *

One usualy good source has confirmed that at least one camera was
coming, without giving any detail (NDA as usual).

At least two Pentax distributors have indeed confirmed to a couple
users that the 60-250 wouldn't be there before Photokina :( :(

That's it (much isn't it?) you can get back to your usual stuff.

Compressed DNG and Pentax Photo Browser

2008-07-08 Thread Thibouille
I dunno if anyone noticed but latest version (3.51 I think) of Pentax
Photo Broxwser /Laboratory can indeed export to compressed DNG if so
you want.

I tried a conversion with a K100D Raw file.
Compressed DNG : 6.45MB
Original PEF : 10.1MB

The thing is, The Pentax software will only recognize compressed DNG
compressed by itself and NOT DNG compressed by Adobe :(
Lightroom 1.4 did import that compressed DNG without any problem, of course.

Thought it would be interesting to some...

FS: Willing to donate some stuff, some others I wanna get out cheaply etc.

2008-07-08 Thread Thibouille
I'm willing to donate part of my stuff which isn't used for reasons
easy to understand (old/not much interesting) and which would probably
not generate any revenu on Ebay anyway.

I suppose some beginners to photography might find that interesting,
at least for a start.
Stuff offered for free:

- Ricoh KR10X (or XR10 I think it is the same camera)
- non-SMC ! , Pentax-A 28-80 f/3.5-4.5 (one rubber is nicked,
otherwise it is good state).
- Tamron 28/2.5 with hood but without Adaptall2 adapter.
- Tamron 135/2.8 (early adaptall1 but works with adaptall 2)
- Tamon adaptall Pentax K adapter (without the stops reminder for
in-viewfinder reading)
- Tamron 85-210/4.5 macro 1:3 (early adaptall1 but works with adaptall 2)
- Chinon 28/2.8 (bad shape but usable)
- Chinon 50/1.4 (bad shape but usable)

Stuff I wanna get rid of. Make me an offer, as I said I don't expect
much million dollars (hehe) for those but just wouldn't let them go
for nothing :

- Chinon 300/5.6
- Pentax P30t
- Pentax Z1
- AF240FT
- SMC Pentax-M 50/1.4 (I have another already)
- SMC Pentax FA 100/3.5 macro (1:2)
- Tamron Adaptal2 SP 70-210/3.5-4 macro (1:2) which I would bundle
with a rare adaptal2 P-KA adapter (providing same compatibility as a
A-type Pentax lens).

Make me an offer I can't refuse ;)

they have a damn good marketing presence (not even talking about

Re: P-TTL and how-to-disable question

What the ist-D will do is not allowing plain TTL however which is

All DSLR and PTTL capable bodies will make Pentax flash act this way.

Re: Katz Eye question

It won't affect AF as AF is done lower than focussing screen.
It may affect AE however.

circle in the center of the screen is slightly dark. If I mount FAJ
18-35/4.0-5.6 that bottom half becomes seriously dark. I can still use
it somewhat for manual focusing but I am more concerned that like this
it really intervenes with AF and AE.

I am shooting wearing glasses all the time. What have I done wrong?

When installing the screen I did not hear the clicking sound when I was
locking the filter in place, but I felt that I was closing something
 very tightly.

Also I noticed that the red light for the center AF point is just a bit
lower that the center of the split screen circle...

 Concerned.

Pentax Mobile unit sold to Brother

Regarding newly announced Optio W60

2008-06-10 Thread Thibouille
A couple features I found interesting for those who care:

* HDTV-like resolution videos: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED]/30fps and
[EMAIL PROTECTED]/30fps.

* 36.4 integrated memory (uuh, well nothing ;)

* Can sustain 2 hours at 4 meters deep in water.

* 28-140mm equivallent lens which is quite nice: a true wide angle, 5X
zoom :) :)

* 2.5 screen, 230.000 pixels, 170° viewing horizontal and vertical.

* Digital SR (huh marketing crap)

* Face recognition blabla (marketing crap)

* Accept both SD and SDHC cards of course.

* 10 Mpix sensor (nobody cares I know ^^ )

* weight: 145g with battery and sd card.

Seems all pretty nice considering the price (around 320 US$ MSRP)

Re: Manual flash contol on Pentax DSLRS?

2008-06-03 Thread Thibouille
OK will try to remember as much as I can.

First, contrast control was introduced with Z-serie (SF?) cameras
which did have the ability (which I miss a lot) to use external flash
as well as integrated flash (wireless didn't exist at that time). So
it worked already in the TTL era. It still does work however.

With two flashes (More, I dunno) which were as I said the integrated
flash and the external one, using contrastcontrol will do the
following:

* balance the output power of both flash so 1/3rd the light comes from
the integrated flash and 2/3rd from the external flash.

* lower max sync speed because of the process of syncing those.

In fact the major use of it was when you bounce the external flash and
usse the integrated one to bust shadows. In my experience it worked
pretty well, even with compatible flashes as Metz MZ flashes.

I dunno the implications of using this in wireless mode with more than
2 flashes however or if it is still possible at all. Maybe only in
wired mode with deported flash.

BTW, I checked yesterday and indeed my K10D integrated flash reacts
pretty well to the flash exposure compensation set on the camera.
Exposure settings did not move but flash power did, and the result was
very noticeable between -1 and +1.

I think this is all. Feel free to ask for more :)

Thanks for all those precious advices. I will see wha I can come up with.

I already took a couple pictures with my 100/3.5 macro and macro
rings, flash. This was only possible because the little baby prawn was
kind enough to put itself on the front glass of the aquarium, so it
was more or less in focus.

Even in this situation (which was backlit with light of the aquarium),
I had to use Iso1600 and the hting is still s small on the
picture.
Result is quite bad. In fact it is nice to see I managed to do this,
but on a photographic POV, it is bad.

More later :)

on a SuperA, 645 and K10... I would love a better wideangle than the FAJ
 18-35 as well...

 Regards, Lucas

Hehe :) I can testify it works nicely with my SuperA. I have no LX or
645 (yet?) unfortunately :(

20 Pentax lenses tested on K20D by Chasseur D'images

2008-05-20 Thread Thibouille
Anyone owning a K20D should buy this magazine IMO.

Lots of optics tested here: from FA* 27-70/2.8, FA*85/1.4 to all
Limiteds, DA*, the new DA17-70 SDM etc...

Most lenses are quite good and a couple numbers simply excellent !!

Talking about recent lenses:

- DA 17-70 SDM: it is good, vingettes a lot at 17 but it very nice
upgrade over the kit lens. They say there's no focus touch up (!! to
be confirmed) but there's indeed weather sealing. They do not say if
it is SDM-only but I think so.

- DA*200/2.8: excellent !!

- DA*300/4: excellent !!

- DA35/2.8 macro: excellent !

DA* 50-135 and DA* 16-50/2.8: centering defects but otherwise very good.

A lot more lenses tested, you should really buy this magazine.
More when I can buy one.

Re: 20 Pentax lenses tested on K20D by Chasseur D'images

2008-05-20 Thread Thibouille
Two comments:

1/ Photozone seem to be the only one to find that much fringing, other
report very acceptable fringing

2/ it probably is more sensor blooming which means it is a K10D sensor
problem and not a lens problem.

Remember those test come from a K20D not a K10Dn and this is *much* different.

Speaking of brackets. It has a standard sync connection. What's my
best options for triggering the flash if I want to have some kind
autofunction? That leaves standard sync out, deosn't it? I'm not very

I need it. So I beleave the Pentax sync is the only alternative left.

It means you can use auto flash as easily as PTTL but.. without PTTL.
Usefull if you don't like PTTL or if you need to cure problems as:

 * poeple closing their eyes due to the early metering flash from PTTL.

There's one, but not free :(
It is up to you to judge is 30 US$ (AFAIR) is good money for that or not.
Note that it supports metadate editing etc. so it is fairly complete
although not free.

Microsoft links of codecs do point to that codec. Contrary to what
Microsoft states on this link the actual version isn't anymore an RC
but is a proper final release (but still in developpement to make it
even better).

No it does not suggest anything, the camera only sees a lens ID and
doesn't know anything bout its name.
The translation from Lens ID to name is built into the software

New lenses will show the same things, I'd be heavily surprised the the
new DA35 and DA55-300 would be recognized by Lightroom.

Thank you all. God isn't a concept I'm used to but I'm pretty much
honored about your comments :) :)

Keep in mind though that this only enables Jpeg preview. In no way
does it means any program can read the actual DNG, if the WB is off,
your thumbnail WB is as well.
If there's no embedded Jpeg for any reason, bad luck. No metadata
support either.

Still, it is defenitely usefull :)

NB: I did not find (yet) a solution for Vista. There's a codec
available but it will cost you like US$ 30. Not too much but not free.
This one however will provide full functionality including metadata
editing.

Re: Info about Katz Eye Focusing Screens

It seems, putting a DS/Katzeye scrren in a K10D (and K20D I suppose, I
do not expect any change there) would cure (at least up to a certain
point) the metering problems with K/M lenses and provide a situation
comparable to D/DS etc bodies.

It also provides microprism if so you chose but it might as well
degrade the metering performance with A/F/FA/DA lenses.

Tough choice IMO...

I didn't tried it yet but I'd suggest reading here about the whole stuff:

In short, it has quite a number of very nice additions (I imagine

release, IMO the upgrade will be a given.
However, this is currently an early beta (beta 1) and as such really
is for testing purpose only (but that multiple monitor support has me
very impatient ;)

Those having a licence can use it till august 2008. Others can use it
as a 30days trial.

Re: Lightroom 2.0 beta

2008-04-02 Thread Thibouille
Mm I dunno how Lightroom works (or not) with networked drive but I
know that up to a couple days ago my collection was stored on a
external drive connected by USB to my laptop.
If the drive wasn't connected (e.g. when I'm teaching at school)
simply Lightroom will not simply not be able to load the image full
screen and will display the thumbnail it has made (depending on your
Lightroom settings).

I never ever had problems doing metadata or collection search in
catalog with the disk not connected. This isn't a problem.
Now, can I suppress a file from disk (disk being not connected) and
will the effective delete happen when I'll launch Lightroom with disk
connected later? I dunno, I suppose Godfrey knows.

Indeed.

I tend to be a prime guy from a theoretical perspective. But I shoot
more with zooms. Love the primes, but the zooms are more flexible and
all three of my current ones are excellent performers.

I am a zoom guy myself most of the time for convenience and cost
reasons. But I have to see things honestly: in no way I will be able
to buy a DA* zoom, it is just flat impossible, alternative from Sigma
or Tamron might be possible but 800+ Euros for a lens is impossible
for me :(

Also, thinking a bit more about that 35macro... In Europe (I know in
US the price difference between FA35 and DA35 is big) the price is
about the same for an FA35 or the DA35. This an interesting point IMO,
even if we dunno if the DA35 covers 35mm 'FF' yet ;)

Also, it is a macro lens but a cheap one for a OEM brand: 310-340
euros isn't much and it enables Pentax with a very cheap macro lens.
The DFA50 is around 480-500 euros and quite a bit bigger, and nowhere
near normal lens on digital. It offers direct competition to Sigma
50 macro which is at the same price.

Certainly true.

There isn't much advantage in buying a 35mm f/2.8 lens when the 16-50 is also
an f/2.8, unless all you are going
to do with the 35mm lens is macro work at closer ranges than the 16-50 will

Unless you like primes and prefer lenses without much vignetting or

Roadmap: (very) slight update

2008-03-19 Thread Thibouille
Here it is: http://www.digital.pentax.co.jp/en/lens/roadmap.pdf

A couple slight changes occured:
* 17-70 and 60-250 marked as Summer availability, the 200 as a
shipping lens and and 300 as a future lens (no availability given)
* DA35 macro marked as current lens and 18-55II as well.
* 55-300 and DA*300 aren't 'tentative name' any more.

So, nothing new but good to see Pentax finally understand that an
updated roadmap is useful for those looking for informations about
Pentax.

Re: Continuous Autofocus w/ K20D and DA*

2008-03-16 Thread Thibouille
Paul this seems to go in the same way as the (very unofficial) test
posted at pentaxforums (K20D+DA200) which indeed point to a better
AF-C performance than K10D.

Now where is the better performance factor... SDM algorythms? K20D AF
module? both?

Good news anyway :)

Re: K20D long-lens, high ISO samples

2008-03-08 Thread Thibouille
IMO the K-1 was just only a code name.
They may want or not to reuse a code name as an actual product name.

Re: DA 17-70 f4

2008-03-05 Thread Thibouille
It is scheduled for the summer if memory isn't too poluted yet.
No it won't be sealed, however. It sports the exact same construction
type as the DA16-45.

Re: (not for 56K modem guys) Usefull comparison between 40D and K20D at High ISOs

2008-02-29 Thread Thibouille
I agree Toralf, but it still provides intresting info on the likely
possibilities of the camera.

It at least means, it will be able to get pretty decent picture from
the K20D at 3200 ISO when the K10D does about the same at 800-1000
ISO. Pretty decent upgrade IMO.

(not for 56K modem guys) Usefull comparison between 40D and K20D at High ISOs

2008-02-26 Thread Thibouille
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/184452-post1.html

Really not that bad. The 40D is a bit better, even at 1600 I do not
see much of a difference.
The ISO3200 is clearly better on the 40D.

More comparisons... Noise, downsizing and WB

2008-02-26 Thread Thibouille
* A700 vs K20D comparison:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/184415-post1.html

* 40D vs K20D: Close-up on the mirror of the Pentax ES from the picture.
The 40D is left and K20D is right:

http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/184717-post11.html

I ask for a confirmation about shooting conditions but those are
probably Jpeg without NR, knowing the guy.
WB for the K20D shots was manual, don't judge auto WB on this...

IMO the K20D is really not bad at all.
From a couple comments, downsizing the K20D output to match the 10Mpix
from the Canon results in the K20D pics showing quite less noise.
Seems the K20D is really competitive and by boathing those 14,6Mpix at
the top of it.

Re: Need info on K10D AF vs. MZ-S

2008-02-25 Thread Thibouille
Carlos, you may have not to wait too long if you wanna buy a K10D new.
You are not the only one wanting to snam a pretty nice deal out of
K10D lasting stock.

Second hand should OK, sourcing from the guys ditching the K10D for a K20D ;)

Re: Need info on K10D AF vs. MZ-S

2008-02-24 Thread Thibouille
Carlos, I never tried an MZ-S unfortunately but..
* I think the istD (a camera I owned) and istDS (the one you own) is
really identical, if I'm not mistaken.
* the K10D AF is way faster than istD AF, just not even comparable.

I dunno how those compare to the MZ-S however.

What a lovely lens. Small and buttery-smooth. The rubberised focus ring
doesn't feel as classy as the SLI metal rings, but that's about my only
   niggle.

I know it isn't considered a macro lens, but it sure performs well close
up. And the bokeh is scrumptious.

Tests of the 40/2 SLII and the Epson RD-1 (WOOHOO) to come.
