Re: K100D comments
Thanks for the hands on report Bob. Dave Just a quick report of my impressions of the camera... I saw my sister and her family yesterday. She and her 26 year old son are both Pentax users. He just bought a K100D so I got an up close and personal look at it. Construction, egronomics, switch layout and menu's are all familiar. The body is maybe 1/8th inch bigger and a bit more boxy (plastic?) than my DS. Shake reduction was there, but I couldn't give it much of a test. The viewfinder was fine, with slightly smaller text below it than my DS. The LCD on the back was of course much bigger! Autofocus was similar, but the buffer is smaller. I could get 3 jpeg's in continuous shooting before the 4th shot had a delay while the buffer emptied. I get more like 6 with the DS. My nephew has been shooting with an ME Super he 'borrowed' from his mom. He likes the new camera and waited for shake reduction rather than buy a DS or DL. He has used it mainly with the 18-55mm kit lens on fully automatic. He also took the time to figure out how to shoot some black white conversions on the camera. You don't still have it set for wireles mode do you Dave? Dave Nope.:-) Its done this from day one, just never got around to sending it in. I try not to use the pop up anyway. Better results from the Sigma The Nikon D1 had a black screen even whan an older battery showed full or 2/3 etc. Turns out its a voltage thing. Just enough drop in an older battery tohinder the shot. Solution is to get a new battery and all is well again. Could be the same thing on my istD, not quite as full battery as shown and its hindering the production of the shot. However my daughters istD seems ok. Dave On 8/7/06, David J Brooks [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sounds like a problem. Re: D and flash circuit problem
I hope Pentax will still repair it... What would you do? Repair or send it back considering he bought it about 500 euros ?? If he bought it new, then I'd say send it back. Why pay money to send it to repair if you can try your luck by just swapping for a new one. As for the problem itself, my ist-D started having the same issue with the pop up flash about a month ago. I haven't had an opportunity to send it in yet (just got back in the country this morning), but I think I will in about a week or so. Circuitry problems with the ist-D seem to be nothing new, in general. I remember when we got to fiddle with the prototype on Grandfather mountain before it came out (was that fall 2001?). The camera wouuld show a low-battery signal, but then when you turned it on and off again it was fine. The joke was that the camera was able to self-charge the batteries... Little did we know that they'd never *quite* fix the problem. Not so funny anymore. Yes, it's a bit embarrasing when shooting for money. I never use the pop up on the istd if a paying client is inc=vovled now. Sigma on the istD or use the D200. Yes i know, you dopn't have to say it, why would i use a pop up for a paying client.:-) Dave - Jerome -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net
Re: What's so different about the PEFs from a K100D?
Ralf. Could be a subtle change in the software/hardware that is a pef. I know thet each new Nikon Dslr has subtle changes and you have to buy the new version of Nikon Capture and View to see these items. However, Adobe probly have the K100D pef info and should release an updated ACR soon. If not, download DNG, convert and enjoy. Thats what i need to to for the D200 Nefs and CS on the Mac. Dave Hello all, a friend came along today to show me his new K100D and a few shots he'd taken with it. Turned out that neither CS2 nor Lightroom read the PEFs from a K100D. Given that they're the same resolution and pixel count, I don't quite see why that should be. Otherwise a nice camera but compared to my DS I wouldn't want to be buried with the K100's viewfinder. Re: Sigma 70-200 2.8?
To bad you didi not tell me at GFM you were interested in that. I had my Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR with me. You could have held that to see about weight. I think the Sigma is a tad lighter, but not 100% on that. All i know is the f2.8 versions of lenes, as Bruce noted anr edamn heavy. But, love the VR Dave I have to smile about the weight. I had the Tokina 80-200/2.8 and one of the reasons for me to get rid of it was weight. So now I have a much more portable/holdable A 70-210/4 and a Sigma 100-300/4 EX that always goes on a monopod. Part II Conversions, IR
I tend to shoot, so far, my IR shots with the R72 fillter, at somewere around F 4 and shutter of 1/30 or 1/20. This gives me a histo with mostly midrange pixels, say from 50/60 to 180 plus or minus. If i try and get a good mountain histo 0 to 240 or as close as possible, the shot looks horribly over exposed. This would be in the F4 and 1/4 second range. What should i be looking for here. I seem to have ~some~ decent results with method 1, and my GFM photo was using these values. Is it because the filter is cutting out a large amount of the visible lihght that i'm getting the mid range mountain as aposed to the overall mountain histo. Is the midrange histo giving me the proper exposure, even though it looks wrong as in normal colour shots. Re: OT: Developer
As all of you (or at least many of you) know, I only do film, I don't develop my own, I don't print my own, I have no interest in developing and printing. I like taking pictures and bringing them to my lab, coming back a week later and picking up negs or prints, as the case may be. As you've all noticed, the stuff I post often looks like poo. I'm not very good at scanning. Much of my early reputation as a purveyor of fuzzy pics comes from my sketchy abilities at the scanner. Every year I got to Grandfather Mountain, and every year someone new from the list looks at my pix and says, Holy crap, some of these are really really sharp. I love the way these things look! Those are amazing grey-tones. The blacks are deep, the greys are beautiful. How do you do it? Who said that.:-) More specifically, Mat Maesson asked what developer Robert the Lab Guy and Printer uses. I was speaking to him today (Robert, not Mat), and I finally remembered to ask him. He says that he just uses regular Agfa Multigrade Developer, and prints my stuff on Agfa Pearl paper. I told him about the compliments I get on how the prints look (which may have to do with lowered expectations from poor scans g), and he said a great part of how my prints (specifically) turn out has to do with my exposures, which he says are usually bang on, and never too thin (which I guess means lots of detail?). He offered the opinion (as he has on numerous occasions, and as I've previously reported to this list) that those that shoot with manual meters tend to have more consistent and better exposed negs than those who rely on AE. Of course, I'm sure there are exeptions to that rule. I use a meter. I'll see what he has to say about my stuff.:-) Or, he could just be saying all that stuff just to stroke me, and keep me coming back... Most likely. BTW hopefully Friday i'll drop some off. Dave Just to keep your minds off politics .-) During my holiday I was reading and listening to music but had the TV on (and sound off), just in case there was a weather forecast. Suddenly something known caught my attention on the TV. In a program about some opera seminar in western Norway a singer was standing in front of a painting, and the painting was identical to one of my photographs. After some detective work, and help from the Norwegian community at www.foto.no, I found the painter, and he admitted that he had downloaded my picture and used it, but he refused to take the picture down and claimed that he was a not a very good painter and therefore his painting was not a copy of my picture. He said that he would sell it if someone wanted it and that I could by it if I wanted to. Now the story has been twice in the local radio station and will be in the local newspaper tomorrow. Re: Firewire card reader
I have the ibook G4. I don't have my receipt here ay work, but its something in the area of 1.33 to 1.8 Hz. I bought it last September, and i THOUGHT it was to have included 2 usb 2 slots. Both cards read at GFM, and at home for that matter, were the 2gig Sandisk Exteme III cards. One with Nikon Nef/Jpg files and the other with Pentax Pef files. Its at least 20 min for a d/l. I never timed my PC Windoze XP home SP2 with usb 1 slots, but going through PS's download screens take about the same time, more or less. Dave Which iBook do you have? Not all of them have USB 2.0 ports. You can find out by opening System Profiler, click on USB in the Hardware section, and then look to see if you have anything with a USB High Speed Bus attached. It should show 480 Mbits/sec. Even that doesn't necessarily mean you'll have fast throughput ... readers are not all equal. Two of the supposedly-full-USB 2.0 card readers I bought could not move data faster than 2.5Mbytes/second (that's roughly [EMAIL PROTECTED]). The Sandisk Imagemate 12-in-1 moves data from a Sandisk Ultra II CF card at roughly 7.5-8 [EMAIL PROTECTED] (call it roughly 60-65 [EMAIL PROTECTED]) which means a full 1G card will download in about 135 seconds. Re: Firewire card reader
Downloading the raw files at GFM this spring took about 20 minutes per card, on the mac usb2. Nico lent me his firewire card reader and that time went down to about 90 seconds. I'm looking for one to. g Dave Well I finally decided that I needed to speed up my memory card downloading - especially with an eye toward a couple of jobs coming up - so I decided to look into getting an IEEE1394 card reader. And with the prospect of the new K10D and SD cards (g...) in the near future, a multi-format, or at least CF and SD, reader seemed the way to go. Surprisingly enough, there aren't a lot of them around. I ended up ordering an Addonics AESDMD2FW Mini Digidrive. It arrived yesterday and though I don't have another Firewire card reader with which to compare it, I can certainly tell that it's much faster than my current USB2 card reader. (Over twice as fast, which leads me to suspect that my old card reader isn't operating at full USB2 speed, but that's another story...) Here's the buy.com link for this item: http://www.buy.com/prod/Addonics_Mini_Digidrive_7_In_1_Flash_Reader_Firewire_2_Slots/q/loc/101/10341066.html They aren't kidding when they say that this item sells out quickly: I went through a lot of on line shops and couldn't find *any* that had it when I originally ordered it. Re: Magic Hour, Some Examples
Great examples Paul. What lens were you using. Dave Grace and I went for a walk at magic hours, so I shot some lighting examples. To me, the three basic magic hour lighting schemes are ball up (just before it dips below the horizon), ball down, and ball down backlit with clouds in the east. These are not memorable shots. The third one is okay. But they serve to illustrate the light. I temperature corrected to suit my pleasure in the RAW converter. But I made no effort to make them all the same. Color temp isn't a problem when shooting digital RAW. You can go wherever you want without loss. Here's Grace at magic hour with the ball up. The major advantage of shooting at this time is that the angle of the light is behind camera. But it's a bit hard and very warm. I cooled it down here, but left some warmth to show the effect. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4662865 Here's Grace with the ball down. Ball down light is not as warm as ball up, and it's less harsh. She's facing southwest, so the light is coming in at a bit of any angle, but it's soft and reasonably diffuse. This shot might be a wee bit soft, but it serves the purpose in terms of illustrating the light. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4662873 Finally, here's Grace with the ball down facing east. A bank of clouds in the east is reflecting light back at her. The light is very soft and diffuse. This is my favorite magic hour light. http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=4662884 -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: OT: Why do you take pictures?
Why do i take pictures. Well the horses make me money.g However... I take my personal photos for probably this reason. I tend to find myself living in the past, or wanting to live in the past, so to speak. I don't take well to changes, radical or not. Stouffville is getting a Wal-Mart. I m having difficulty dealing with this.:-) For that reason, having rampant development in the area i reside in, makes me want to capture the existing, simpiler way of life, the farm and its people and machineas and animals, before they are all gone. As far as landscapes, we live on one of the best planets around. Why not record its beauty and funcionality. Just remember after all ther oil is gone, and we have blown our selves all to bits, we'll look like any other planet out there. Whats the point of photographing that.:-) Dave While doing panoramas earlier today - at the beach - a young woman asked me: Why do you take pictures? Out of nowhere, I came upp with this (rather arrogant) answer: Because I'm a photographer. I expected her to give me problems or to follow up on the question - but she didn't. To my big surprise, she accepted my answer. Re: OT: Tent camping
I scare bears away, apparently, if thats a concern. Services available, and have a tent. vbg Dave I plan to move in 6-8 months out of California. Probably. Most likely. Finances and all that, plus the humongous amount this condo will now sell for. CA housing prices are outrageous, but I might as well benefit from it. :-) Being a third generation Californian, this will be a wrench. And having lived here so long, I've seen a great deal of California. But I have not seen a lot of it for a long, long time. So I've been making plans to revisit some old familiar places before I leave, like Santa Cruz, Lake Tahoe, Siskiyou County, and Yosemite. And quite a few other places. Like I am considering a trip up the coast to catch a lot of redwoods and visit some spots that have some family history attached. Then when I sit down to figure it out, seems like if I want to see everything I want to see it could run into big bucks (motel rooms are expensive these days). So I started thinking I may have to do some tent camping to see everything. Starting probably in August. Never camped alone as a woman, bit intimidating. I did do a fair amount in my thirties with a group. But that was a long time ago. :-) I might eat out all the time and only camp over night. Haven't decided. Anyway, these trips will definitely be photography oriented. Been sort of figuring out the basic camping gear I need for tent camping. No frills. No backpacking. Anyway, anyone with any suggestions about camping gear I wouldn't mind hearing them. I also wouldn't mind hearing suggestions on tent camping in general. Tent camping to me means the camps are easily accessible by car and no RVs are involved. Re: Newsworthy Photo - Burst Fire Hydrant
Nice shot Shel. I had been trying for 20 years to get a picture or letter into the l;ocal paper. February i managed several from a fund raiser. The editor was there with a PS, saw me, came over and chatted for a second, looked at my gear, and saidYou seem to know what your doing, heres my card, email me some from this thing., and left. Next month i had a letter to the editor published. When it rains it pours, or at least get wet from fire hydrants. LOL Dave I left the crop loose figuring that, if the paper wanted to use the pic, they'd have some room to crop to their needs. I shot about fifteen or so frames - until there was no more room on the card I had - with somewhat different angles and perspectives. I may post one or two more pics at some point, but with one or two exceptions, it seems that the list isn't too interested in the photo, so I don't have much incentive to go further with it here. Thanks for your comments ;-)) Shel [Original Message] From: Godfrey DiGiorgi Yup. :-) In eons past, I did a lot of such stuff as a newspaper stringer. It was always 1 chance in a hundred that a picture of mine would get picked, but I did get four or five into the papers. Nothing of any note, sadly. People who make a living as stringers a) do a LOT of ambulance and police chasing, b) shoot a LOT of this stuff, and c) have a well established relationship with editors and public service personnel which affords them insight into where things are happening and what kinds of photos will tickle the buying reflex of a given paper's editorial staff. It's a good shot. I'd have liked to see a few more angles and some tighter cropping. Shel Belinkoff wrote: The photo editor liked it - called it hydrant art. Re: Pros and cons of dye-sub and inkjet printers
I used to own an Olympus P-400 dye-sub printer which printed up to A4 I'd bought it to do on-site printing at trials. Paper and ribbons were very expensive. Plus you had no choice but to buy the Olympus paper and ribbon. I could print glossy or matte, but that entailed switching ribbons not the paper. It was also not very forgiving of dust. I frequently had to discard the first and sometines the second print because of dust. That was my big concern. At the shows the dust was horrible and embeded just about 50% of the shots. Its ok in house if you give the paper a good dust off. Its for sale BTW.:-) The prints out of it tended to have a more plasticky look to them. A friend recently showed me two photos she'd had taken by the official photographer at a dog conformations show. Without even looking at the back of the print I knew immediately that one of them had been printed using a dye-sub on site. The difference was striking. I never noticed the plastic look until i compared some last year. Now i realy on my trusty S800 Canon. Re: phew - re-enabled
Ann. I find the menu and setup of the D aLOT easier than its Nikon sisters. Nikon has a ton of sub and subsub menues. I still get totally confused when i change something. Just a FYI Dave On Jun 29, 2006, at 12:33 PM, Ann Sanfedele wrote: What I am curious about is that you seem comfortable enough with the LX ... What makes the *ist DS so much more difficult to deal with? Or do you not use the LX very much anymore either? It's the way the bells and whistles work and the existence of them ... Objectively I see the following things wrong that I imagine anyone would be annoyed with (1) the battery is extra fragile because of the way it is constructed, (2) things that you might want to do quickly require getting into the menu and scrolling (like that on the PRO-1, too, but I've got the pattern in my head now ) Ha - bet you are sorry you asked! No. I find people's reactions to things very interesting. Well, different strokes. Personally, I find the Pentax DS very much alike to my old Nikon FM/FE2 and use it in much the same way. Of course, it has a lot more features which I use when it seems appropriate, but overall I just take pictures with it and consider the SD card the equivalent of film, only I don't have to do film processing. Photoshop and the Epson printer operate as I used a darkroom in eons gone past ... only the results are better but I'll leave that argument to others to natter over ;-) ... Never could stand what photofinishers did with my photos so that option was never acceptable for me. I never read the warnings in the manuals and so far have not destroyed either of the bodies. Nor found them unresponsive in the same conditions I used all my other cameras over the years so I don't know what all the warnings in the manuals are all about. Yet more evidence of a deranged society's need for abundant over- protectivisms, I suspect. Curious that you focus on the battery door so much. I've not found it to be fragile at all. With 16,000+ exposures on two DS bodies, swapping NiMH batteries out every week for charging most of the time, I've certainly exercised the door quite a bit on both and it doesn't seem to be having any problems that I can tell. Once you have a DS set up the way you want, you almost never need to go into the main menu to do anything. It would be nice if the meter pattern selector and focus mode selector was in the Fn menus like the ISO and drive modes, but I hardly ever change the settings anymore. Most of what I touch is - the exposure mode selector for Tv-Av-M, - the aperture-shutter-exposure comp thumbwheel and button, - the Fn menu for ISO setting, - and the AF-MF switch (at which point I also use the lens' focusing ring in MF mode). Seems pretty close to what my film cameras had except for the AF-MF switch. Personally, I prefer ring-operated zooms, push-pull zoom controls are difficult to use with precision. But I rarely use zoom lenses anyway, I have three but only really use one of them (the FA20-35) with any frequency. I usually just set a focal length and then start framing and shooting ... in other words, it's like having four primes in one lens. Anyway, you like and want what you like and want. No matter where you go, there you are. Enjoy the Pro-1 and don't worry about it. Re: RAW converters for OS X, was Re: Windoze versions and DS
Not sure what Paul will say Aaron, but I have El 3 and loaded up the new ACR to work with D200 Nefs. Its a cheaper program, about $100.00 or less and you can do raw conversions with some limitations. The main stuff is there, but you don't have the lens adjustment parts. I don't really care for El 3 Psing, so i open in PS 6 to finalize. Gotta get the PS 7 disk (PC) out and load that up one day.:-) Dave For what reason, Paul? -Aaron On Jun 27, 2006, at 6:13 AM, Paul Stenquist wrote: In terms of a RAW Converter, I think you'd be better off with PS Elements 3 or 4. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Coyotes are making a comeback all over the US. They are filling the niche left behind by the devastated wolf population. As such they are getting bigger.
