I've seen lots of Nikons and Canon dslrs on eBay that have been modified

Is it possible to use Pentax K20D for IR photography without replacement
 of the sensor filter glass.

 Thank you for your info.

Re: Zoom travel lens

2008-08-23 Thread japilado
I used my Pentax 18-250 while touring the Best of China last March. I
also had a Sony W-7 point and shoot that I used to record short video
clips. I used the 18-250 to take closeups of some ceremic objects in the
Shanghai Museum of Art. I bought the lens mainly for the wide-angle to
tele, not for shooting macro images. Otherwise, it is a great lens for
my purposes.

Jim A.

Last week I bought a Pentax 18-250 lens to use as a travel lens. On
my last trip I used a K100 with a Sigma 18-50 kit lens, and used my
sp550 for long shots and videos and was planning to use the new lens
on my K10 for my next trip. I have been testing it on my K10 on
various subjects and conditions since then. Close ups of very small
objects like spiders are the main problem with it. For very small
objects I get better results with my SP550, which can get good
results with a lot of cropping. I have a Pentax 18-55 and a Tamron
70-300 that I have been using at home. Should I be able to get good
colseups with the 18-250 lens? I would like to get a macro but as
with the faster lens than the 18-250 it is out of my reach for now.

 Thanks
 Mike

Re: What plans do you have for old digital SLRs?

2008-08-10 Thread japilado
Greetings,
Someday, I will purchase a K200D. Right now, my ist D is my main
camera. I also own a Canon D30 which soon may be converted to IR because
I really like what happens to an image when taken in IR. Right now, I
have a Sony W-7 PS camera that was converted to IR.

Jim A.

 Hi All,

I was wondering on this cold and wet weekend as I nurse my cold
(Melbourne winters are SO much fun) what I'm going to do with my ever
increasing digital SLR collection. It's not really worth while selling
them off, but I also don't want to keep them in a cupboard for the rest
 of eternity.

I normally have 2 cameras in operation. A field camera, that I won't
loose sleep over if it ends up being dropped into sea water and for want
of a better term a studio camera that I use when the danger is not
imminent. The current field camera is an istD, the studio camera is a
K10D and I have a retired (or spare) istD doing nothing. I've resisted
the K20D simply because I don't want to have too many cameras without a
purpose. But the K30D is on the list and at that point I have 2 istD's
sitting around. This might be a good time to start playing with stereo
photography, all I need is a second of one of the lenses I already own
 and I'm away.

When the K10D is retired it may end up being converted to IR. Given new
cameras coming out every couple of years and even buying into every
second generation I'm going to drown in cameras eventually if I don't
find uses for them. Has anyone else thought of this or already run into
the problem? and if so what have you done/plan to do?

Nice story. I recall when the 6X7 was introduced (I think the 1960s). I
picked it up and decided that it was much too large for me to handle.
Years later, I settled on the 645 Pentax which I still use to photograph
weddings.

Jim A.

 hi,

no photos, just a small story... :-))

there's a camera repair guy near my workplace who does everything from
small point and shoots to nikon d200s. since he has been at it for long,
he also has a large customer base and his camera repair shop also serves
 as an unofficial sell-buy hub.

i drop in once in a while to see if he's got anything interesting (over
the last two years i've got a k50/1.2 and the k30/2.8 from him in very
good condition at throwaway prices)...i had gone there yesterday and
for the first time yesterday laid my eyes on a pentax 6x7 in good
condition. looks like one of the earlier models (asahi pentax) with a
takumar super-multi-coated 105/2.4 lens. he said i could have it for
 the equivalent of US$240.

i wouldn't know what to do with it and don't even know whether i have
the biceps to handle it. so just played around with it for a while just
to get a sense of what it must feel like to be in the brotherhood. the
k10d is itself more camera than i can handle :-)

Re: Tamron\Pentax 18-250 lens

2008-07-24 Thread japilado
I purchased the rebranded Pentax lens for my trip to China last March. I
didn't really look for any flaws in the images that might have been
caused by the lens. It did the job for what I intended for, capturing
the sights of the places in China that our tour took us.

Jim A.

I have read that the Pentax 18-250 lens is a rebranded Tamron lens,
with the addition of a zoom lock. Did Pentax change anything besides
the addition of the zoom lock?

On my last overseas trip I used a K100D with the kit Sigma 18-50 lens
and an Olympus SP550UZ for the long shots and movies. The Oly worked
ok and I think the long shots, such as gargoyles on Notre Dame, with
it were generally ok, the biggest problem was in low light conditions
when it often took a long time to lock on and the usually very good
 stabilisation didn't work too good.

For my next trip I was thinking of getting a Pentax 18-250 for my
K10. I have read a lot of good things about it, but have also read
some reviews that make it sound like the distortion at the wide and
long ends are noticeable, possibly more than that of the Oly. I have
also read that because of the slowness, particularly at the long end,
it can take a while to focus in low light. Could anyone tell me how
the 18 mm shots with the 18-250 compare with those from the Pentax 18-55?

I am trying to decide between using my 18-55 lens on the K10, which I
know produces good results, and continue using the Oly for long
shots, or getting the 18-250 and use the Oly only for video.

 Thanks
 Mike

Re: Ads for Pentax

2008-06-23 Thread japilado
Back in the early 1960's, I bought my first 35mm camera from Ritz. Back
then they were located only on the East Coast, if my memory serves me
correctly. My first 35mm was the Argus C3.
Jim A.

I used to work for Ritz. From what I gathered, their relationship
with Pentax was rocky at best. Their smaller stores will get the
K200's, but for a K20 you'd have to go to one of their 'Ultra'
stores. The smaller stores only get a basic selection of gear (kit
lenses, 55-200/75-300s, the odd tamron 18-200, maybe one or two
'specialty' Canikon lenses), while the Ultra's have a pretty good
selection. If customer came in looking for an item we didn't have, we
could transfer it from our local Ultra store or 'Ritz Express' it in.
In all honesty, if they have to ritz express an item in, you're better
 off buying it online.

As for their ads, I don't think they check local inventory when they
print them. I helped open a new store, and the grand opening ad
mentioned a cheapo clearance film PS that we never even had in stock.

The only reason I go there anymore is a) I still have friends who work
there and b) they're geographically closer than anything but walmart.

Re: How often do you use a tripod? (Was: Re: Tripod Q)

2008-06-06 Thread japilado
I use my tripod when I want to carefully compose a photograph, like, say,
a wedding. I recently purchased a product called Trek-Pod Go that
combines a walking staff, monopod, or tripod. When I visited the Big
Island of Hawaii, the Trek-Pod Go helped to steady me when I walked over
lava fields - and my Pentax *ist D when I needed to compose a shot.

Jim A.

This tripod discussion has been very interesting, but
 the question arises:

How often are people =using= their tripods these days?

I have found that since getting the K10D with its
anti-shake, I rarely use one; and it's really nice to
leave that 3-5 lbs (1.5-2.5 kg, if you prefer) of gear
 and the set-up fuss behind.

Re: Pentax LX, auto/TTL flash and slow speeds

2008-03-10 Thread japilado
To achieve slow sync with the 280T and the LX, I had to purchase a
special holder made by Pentax. You attach the 280 to the shoe atop the
holder and connect it to the LX using that special synch cable made by
Pentax (I recall it was an expensive cable). The holder has a switch on
it for Auto Sync. Set or Slow Speed Sync. When set to Slow Speed Sync
(with the flash set to TTL Auto), I can use shutter speeds below X Synch
and usually get perfect exposure.

Jim A.

Only way I was able to shoot slow sync with that combination was to
shoot on 'manual' flash setting and do the math.
It always pleased me that the 280 would release the 1/80 shutter for
 such shooting.

TTL flash metering I've used will still control the flash output

No. Unfortunately, with a dedicated flash, the LX reverts to 1/80

Re: Why i don't shoot weddings.

2008-03-08 Thread japilado
I don't photograph weddings very often. If my favorite lab were to go out
of business than I probably will just quit doing them. I do teach a
wedding photography class through a community college. Everyone in my
class last spring shoot digital. They took the class because they were
not sure what types of pictures they should take, or how to pose them.
They are more comfortable shooting digital, but need some pointers that
they feel is better acquired by talking to a veteran wedding photographer.

Jim A.

Film is basically batch processed. In printing, some control is exercised,
the amount of which varies in proportion to how much one pays. With
digital, each frame is processed individually and prints or print files
can e fine tuned. The last two weddings I shot were digital, and I was ale
to roduce perfectly matched shots. The busiest and most expensive wedding
photographers i know all shoot digital. Yes, there are a few promoting
film as something special, but theyre few and far between. And, as I said
in an earlier post, the photographer is at the mercy of the lab. With one
lab after another failing, that's not a good place to e.

Re: Your Great Photographic Moments?

2008-02-08 Thread japilado
My greatest photographic moment was when the U.S. Mail delivered my
first 35mm camera. It was an Argus C3 that I got from then based Ritz
Camera in D.C. It cost me $50 and came with two auxilary lense. Later,
I got two interchangeable lenses that work with the camera.
When I received a Honeywell Pentax H3 for my college graduation gift, I
actually prefered the rangefinder focusing method on my Argus. Much
later, my rangefinder experience was increased by the purchase of a Leica
M2.

 Hi Everyone:

I hope you don't find this request tiresome, but given the great

Re: has anybody used 18-250 ?

2008-01-29 Thread japilado
I bought the 18-250 re-badged Tamron lens the other day from Adorama. I,
too, wanted a lens that could substitute for other zooms. I'm headed
for China in March and didn't want to have to change lenses very often
when I am there.

Jim A.

Has anybody used the Pentax version of the 18-250 (smc P-DA 18-250mm) yet?
Any impressions about it? I don't seem to find any reasonable reviews.

I know, I know, many people here have a snobbish attitude towards this
lens. It is not as great as 85/1.4 or 77/1.8. However, even though I am
not a soccer mom or dad, but I am considering getting this one --
suitable for trips where I have weight/volume limitations, or for
occasions where I need wide range of focal lengths but cannot
switch lenses (e.g. when it is too dusty or there is no time for that).
For the former occasions, it would replace Tokinas 19-35,28-70,and Tamron
70-300, while possibly leaving some space for 1 or 2 primes.

PS. Interesting reading regarding Tamron cousin (brother?) lens:

Re: DIGITAL SURVEY

2007-11-19 Thread japilado
Must be about time for one.

Actually I was reading something on a different list about expectations
and fulfilments with regard to DSLR cameras. No need to be precise about
brands here, it can be any DSLR, but please limit to this sort of
digital camera (with interchangable lens facility) - so no PS or
 anything esle.

Purpose? To help inform my suspicions...

1/ How many DSLRs do you currently own?

  3

2/ How many have you owned in the past?

1

3/ How many years ago did you buy (not just use) your first DSLR?

3

4/ What's the longest length of time you've owned a single DSLR camera?

3

5/ When you purchased your first DSLR, did it live up to expectations?

   yes

6/ How long have you owned you current DSLR (if more than one, the latest)
 ?
2

7/ Has your latest DSLR lived up to expectations ?

   yes

8/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you buy it?

 Maybe

9/ If a new model is released that supersedes - improves upon - your
current or latest model, will you consider your current or latest model
 'obsolete' ?

   My 1st was already obsolete

10/ Do you consider your first DSLR (whether still owned or not)
 'obsolete'?

  no

11/ Have you ever had sex with a bicycle? (You don't have to answer
this. In fact, better if you don't).

Personal summary of results in a week.

Re: Sometimes it's hard to shoot Pentax

2007-09-04 Thread japilado
In the film days, I think Pentax and Nikon were the big draws. When
Canon came out with the
AE-1, they became a player. Minolta made its mark with the Maxxam AF
cameras. IMO, Pentax lost out with the SF series of AF cameras. Canon
EOS cameras were much better, I believe. I am not as familiar with Nikon
gear, although in my mind, the F series were pro machines.
What seems strange to me is going to an electronics toy store and seeing
lots of cameras there, Canons, Nikons, Sonys, Panasonics, and Olympus.
 Pentax? Hm. Maybe not.

Jim A.

So, after my fruitless search for the 16-50mm f2.8
over the last coupe of days (except for the 5
available from the guy in Tokyo on eBay, for
$1,185.00US), I decided to take a deep breath and not
 worry about it for now.

I took a drive down to a local camera shop in
Sacramento to pick up a couple white background rolls
and listen to the radio on the way.

At some point I was reminded about this months' issue
of Outdoor Photographer. In it, they reviewed the K10D
touting its unique Foveon X3 chip (see inset, pg.
92). Suddenly, those old feelings of being abused
crept back into my head drowning out Boston's More
 than a feeling.

I got to the shop and found my rolls of Arctic White
 53 x 36' I was needing. I took a look around and
wasn't suprised to see everything but Pentax on the
shelves. So, I asked one of the salesmen, Do you guys
 carry any new Pentax stuff?

No, sorry. You must be one of the last people to
 still shoot Pentax.

Hum, that's a damn shame, I said, if you did I buy
one of their new lenses from you. I thought my point
 was obvious.

Well, only about 1 in a 1000 people ever ask about
Pentax anymore, he said as if his math were valid.

That may be, but some of their new gear is quite
good, ya know, I said not knowing that he really
didn't know and was even less interested in what I was
about to say. The K10D has been making some waves and
they have some great new lenses coming out for it.

Well, I don't know anthing about it, I haven't read
any of the reviews on it, and I don't make those
decisions anyway the owner does. There's a lot of
great gear out there that we don't carry. At that
point he handed me the charge slip to sign and I took
 my yellow copy and left.

It's a sad thing though. I really used to get such a
kick out of going to camera stores. Not so much
 anymore.

Re: Wedding Experience (long)

2007-09-03 Thread japilado
Your first wedding should be when you are the principle photographer.
Then you will be nervous as hell. I don't know much about the current
state of videography. Do they capture stills from their video, or do your
friends just shoot videos only?

Jim A.

[impatient? scroll down for the link]

I shot my first wedding this past Saturday. Luckily, I was *not* the paid
wedding photographer. Instead, some friends of mine who have a videography
company let me tag along under the guise of their still-shot assistant.
In any event, I thought I'd share my experience in hopes of any helpful
comments, criticisms, etc. Long story short, I learned that I am not ready
for prime time just yet. But the practice was invaluable.

To state the obvious: shooting a real wedding was a whole lot different
than sitting around the house thinking about it! And getting practice in a
situation where there was almost no pressure was great0, especially given
the fact that I'm not all that thrilled with the results. If I was getting
paid as the main photographer, I would definitely be stressing right now
over the quality of the pictures. But one thing I will say is that I
 LEARNED A LOT!! For example...

 1. My autofocus is WAY too slow. FYI, I shot with 2 K10D's, a sigma
 70-200mm 2.8, 24-70mm 2.8, and the Pentax 12-24 lens. Granted Pentax is
known for having slower autofocus than Canon and Nikon (begin debate
here)... but I've never seen this become a huge factor until Saturday...
maybe because I mostly take pictures of waterfalls, landscapes, and my son
who can't walk or crawl yet. Anyway, I missed a lot of shots while the
camera hunted for something to focus on. And many of the shots I did fire
off were blurry beyond salvaging due to my shutter speed being too slow.
In the end, I ended up having to switch to manual focus for almost
 everything just for insurance purposes.

 2. My #1 objective was to not be seen or be a distraction to the other
photographer, and with that I thought I could get away with not using
flash for the entire ceremony. Big mistake. This particular church is on
television almost every day, and so they have great tv lighting. I did
some test shots the night before and the light temp seemed perfect w/o a
flash. Well, I don't know what happened from one day to the next, but all
of my photos in the sanctuary came out with the worst reddish yellow hue.
 Example here:

 http://exposedfilm.net/wwsmith/yellow.jpg

I haven't a clue how I didn't pick it up during the ceremony, but I
didn't. So of course it was a fight to neutralize everything in Photoshop.

 3. Probably the most important thing I messed up... I blew the exposure
on all of the brides dress photos (d'oh!!). I think this is the one I
would've got murdered for if I was the real photographer. Absolutely no
detail in her dress. Just a big white mass. My guess is that I should have
exposed for the dress and let everything else fall into place. If the
tuxedos ended up pitch black, I think that would've been better. But a
bride expects to see every trim line, lace, and bead on her dress in the
photos. So I messed up big time on this one. According to all of my
photos, the bride just had on a big bright white sheet.

But the tuxedos look sharp! (ha)

 4. This is the only one that I couldn't do anything about. Being 5th in
line behind 3 videographers and a paid photographer, I didn't want to move
around too much, so my angles were limited. To be honest, even the paid
photographer was in a number of spots that I don't think I would've been
comfortable in (seemed a little intrusive). The funny part is, I've got
about 5 shots that would've been great... but they've all got some body
part of the other photographer in them (head, arm, shoulder, etc.) It's
actually kinda funny. But hey, at least I know I stayed out of his way.

 5. My flash recycle time was unbearable. I used the AF 540FGZ on both
bodies, and switched batteries on each one during the wedding. I missed SO
MANY shots because the flash was recharging. The first thing I did on
Sunday was to order the Power Pack III from BH. Hopefully that will make
a huge difference the next time around (which is next Saturday, I think).
Obviously I really need two, but alas there *is* a budget.

And without further ado, here are the wee bit of keepers I managed to
salvage from the shoot. As always comments and suggestions are welcomed
 and encouraged.

 http://exposedfilm.net/wwsmith

I'm looking forward to my next opportunity to see if I improve.

 Thanks for reading.

Re: I Hate My *ist D - Eclipse Photos

2007-08-28 Thread japilado
I used my old Canon D60 and a 100-400 EF zoom lens. I set the ISO at first
to 800 and then to 1000. Exposures were still about 2 sec. long (I could
see the stars beginning to trail.) Of the 10 images I took, I liked
just one. I might have gotten a better image had I waited until the moon
began moving out of the Earth's shadow giving me more light.
Anyway, seeing the eclipse was an occasion. Lunar eclipses are more
common than the more spectacular solar eclipses. I read that another
lunar eclipse will occur in Feb. 2008.

Jim A.

I hate my *ist D. I stayed up until 5:15 AM taking eclipse photos. The
first several within 20 minutes of when the eclipse started look OK,
 though
that was not the fabulous part of the evening(morning). However, the
 camera
quickly became noisy (electronic noise), even at short exposures ISO 400
 and
1/500 sec. All with Tokina 500 f/8 mirror lens.

Of course it was at its absolute worst during totality. One shot for some
reason was less noisy than the others, though still ruined by noise (next
 to
 the last as presented).

 http://photo.net/photodb/presentation.tcl?presentation_id=355756

Most shots looked good on the LCD, even when magnified to check focus,
 with
orange hues and turquoise tones at the edge of earths shadow. All lost to
 noise.

Some taken during totality didn't make muster because 8 - 10 sec exposures
were too long and exhibited too much tracking across the frame.

I'm not sure if I have a hardware problem with the camera... may be time
 to
throw it in the trash. I've taken other aurora shots with the same body
that were virtually noise free at exposures of 15 - 20 seconds. The newer
*ist DS with less than 1000 shots on it was even worse, however, at ISO
 800
and 2 secs. Images (not shown here) were absolutely obliterated. Looked
 like a Photoshop effect.

 Still amazing to watch.

 Wedding photography is hard!

I attended a wedding yesterday. It was a fairly low-key affair, and
there was no official photographer. The bride and groom just asked
for the guests to send their digital photos via email after the
wedding. I was also asked to bring my gear and take photos.

I've done a portraiture course, but don't have a lot of experience
working with my AF360 flash in dark situations. I struggled all
night. Out of the 113 photos that I snapped, about a dozen were
useable. I'm glad that there was someone else who seemed to have
more of an official role than I, and he was using a D70s. I kept
over or underexposing, and couldn't get it right.

Wedding photography is hard. I'm going to stick to landscapes!! :)

capacity often within a few days. My latest inquiry resulted in an
offer to be put on a waiting list longer than twice the size limit of
 the class.

There is a publicly available darkroom at an arts center about 20 miles
from here. They recommend a reservation if you want to use the facility
 on the weekend.

But still, most schools aren't even offering the courses anymore. With
the demand around here (not exactly a major metropolitan area), I can't
 help but wonder why not.

As far as i can tell from the upcoming semester programs, some High

I cannot find any night classes. My old place is now shut down due to
obvious lack of enrollmentr. They could not make any money from just

Look at film sales by volume. The numbers aren't there anymore. Ask the
people at your local photolab what sort of film volumes they are
 processing
now as compared to 5 years ago. You may be seeing a few people still
carrying around film cameras, but they aren't taking very many pictures.
The last numbers I had available to me regarding film processing(spring
 06)
was that we were running about a fifth of the film we had been processing
 5
years previous, and over half of it was from single use cameras.
I don't think it has gotten any better in the last year.

Re: Available light wedding

2007-08-01 Thread japilado
I use my 645 with the LS 75mm and the 55mm. I also use a Pentax 400 T
strobe. I purchased the LS 75 so I could have a higher sync speed when
shooting flash outdoors. I take an incident light metering of the scene
and set my shutter speed and f-stop. I use the 400 T for fill flash. I
power down the light output to balance the ambient light with the
strobe.
If shooting inside a church, I meter using the camera's system. I set my
400T to TTL Auto and attach it to the camera via that special Pentax synch
cord. I get very good balance between the flash and the church's ambient
light.
For my candids, I use a Pentax LX and a Leica M2. I shoot film because
I'm most comfortable with it because I have done weddings for many years.

Jim A.

 Hi there,
I'm relatively new to this list, but I would like to ask about a
scenario I have not been able to find much discussion about in the
 archives.

I nearly always use available light in my photographs, and I still use
film. I do work for a weekly newspaper and use a Nikon DSLR as time
restraints and deadlines dictate, but my love is shooting with my pair
of Pentax MXs and soon, a Pentax 645, which will replace my Mamiya C33
as my primary medium format rig. (I also have a few Brownie Hawkeyes and
a Graflex 22 TLR that round out my low-budget yet fun to use MF gear.)

To the scenario... I have been commissioned by some acquaintances to
shoot their wedding this fall. Ceremony will be outdoors, mid September,
at 4:30 p.m. at a mountaintop resort in West Virginia. (About three
hours before sunset, according to the US Naval Observatory.)

Weather permitting, it should be a beautiful event, the light that time
of year is wonderful, and the backdrop will be a panorama of mountains
 with leaves beginning to change.

I'm also being asked to photograph the first hour of the reception,
which will be indoors, in a typical banquet hall setting at the
resort--the luminescent and aesthetic antithesis of the ceremony. Guests
are being provided with disposable cameras for the remainder of the
 reception.

Browsing this list's archives and a number of other respected forums, I
see the vast majority of folks shoot weddings using zooms (typically
~28-70 and ~80-200) and flash (often using a stroboframe or similar
bracket). My style, as mentioned before, however, is natural light and a
collection of prime lenses, excluding my new SMC-A 35-105mm f3.5.

While it's not the way the majority of folks shoot weddings, this couple
approached me because they like my work. (And I've offered a reasonable
fee, since this is my first wedding gig. I warned them of the risk of my
inexperience, encouraged them to shop around for other photographers,
they did, and they came back to me.)

I'm rather inspired to see that until recently, Jeff Ascough was
shooting by available light and on film, with Leicas, of course, rather
than the much under-rated MX. ;) He has since gone digital.

The glass I plan to use includes the SMC-M 50mm 1.4, an Elicar 90mm 2.5,
and I'd like to pick up a SMC-M 34mm f2 for something wide, fast and
affordable that won't distort group shots. For the 645 I have the 75mm
and the 45mm. I may consider picking up the 150mm. This camera will
probably be relegated to the formal portraits, as I think the MX is more
suited to the PJ coverage of the wedding and reception, being
inconspicuous and less intimidating to people on the other end of the
 glass.

I'd like to hear folks' thoughts on lenses appropriate for the job, film
 recommendations for such a scenario (I'm thinking Portra 160 and 400 --
likely 800 for the reception and Ilford XP2 Super), and if I'm being a
 crazy for eschewing flash.

I look forward to hearing what folks have to say.

 Thanks,
 Drew

Re: Available light wedding

2007-08-01 Thread japilado
Hi Drew,
I just let the 400 T and the 645 do all the work balancing the ambient
light and the flash output.
Most churches prefer photographers not use flash during the ceremony. For
my available work, I use the fabulous LX camera and the following lenses,
the 40mm, 135, or 200. I did a wedding in February where the bride
wanted the church lights dimmned down to approximate candle lighting. I
asked the priest to adjust the lights a little brighter so I could record
the scene with the Fujicolor 400 film. The bride never realized that I
had boosted the light up.
Wedding photography is hard work. I offer a one evening class on wedding
photography through a community college. The first words out of my mouth
is that wedding photography is very hard work, work that isn't for the
faint of heart. I've been working weddings for over 35 years.

Jim A.

 Hi folks!
Thanks for the input received so far. I'm finding it very helpful.

Paul- I do plan on having both my bodies on me. I shoot like this a lot
at festivals and parades for the newspaper. To address the issue of low,
mixed lighting, I may propose--when I meet with the couple again in a
couple of weeks--using some high speed black and white film since the
disposables the guests will have will likely be color. I did that once,
as a guest shooter with my Yashica Lynx 14 (my wife was using the MX
with the 50/1.4) and a Vivitar 283 when it was necessary and my friends
were tickled with the album we gave them.

And thanks for reminding me about fill flash to balance subjects with
 backgrounds outdoors. I appreciate it.

Jim- Thanks for your thoughts as well. I've had my eye on the 75mm LS
for that very reason. I haven't had much call for flash at all in my MF
work, this wedding will be an exception. When using the 400T for fill,
do you find you typically dial it down about 1 stop below what you'd
need for full on flash? Also, which camera and lenses do you tend to
use when shooting the ceremony itself?

Graywolf- I appreciate the encouragement. Like I said to Paul, I've used
the combination I mentioned earlier in events and haven't felt lacking.
 I'm a big fan of my Nike-zoom.
I am doing a CD, but the couple knows that it will only have a few
hundred shots. In fact, they really don't want to go overkill with the
coverage. Talking to them about this initially, they really aren't
interested in quantity. They're interested in a modest selection of
shots that are well-done. I had to urge them a little bit to agree to do
formal portraits, because I knew their parents would murder me if there
weren't any of those to show for the big day.

Thanks again, folks. I'm open to more input if anyone has it.

 -Drew

Coming soon for the K10D: Camera Armor.

This blog post has some more details:

I think it's a pretty nifty idea, especially for people who are or want to

 I'd
get myself a black Camera Armor for my K10D. The camo color idea would be
great for serious wildlife photographers and kids who want to look tough.

 Any thoughts?

P.S.: Finally got my computer working at 100%. All it took was a
 replacement

The K10 performed well for the most part. Faster glass is in order and
I think I'll get the cable to connect the 360 to the K10 when it's on
the bracket. For the most part everything was shot on hyper-manual. I
did notice a few instances of sequential shots being exposed
differently. Perhaps it was due to the flash not being fully charged?
A little testing in a controlled environment might shed some light g
on the situation. Overall, though, the 360 performed really well. I'm
 pleased.

After I've had a chance to go through the 630-something photos and edit
them I'll put a few more on line.

with Kodak (who, I believe would like to abandoned film). Sorry I can't
help with these films listed below.

Jim

 Hi all,

I usually follow this list via the archives. I am de-cloaking to ask a
 question.

By way of background, I am an amateur and my SLRs are all film - MZ-S,
 Z1-P,
LX. My subjects are primarily fast moving objects (small children) and
landscapes. Any still life photography is mainly aforesaid small children
 in resting state.

I recently bought several hundred rolls of expired 35mm film. The seller
assures me everything was kept in a fridge. The film came mostly without
boxes, so my guess is it dates from 2001-2004. That's about the time he
switched over to digital for work related reasons.

I use mostly Superia and Reala, so here's a whole bunch of film I don't

Re: Auto-110 SLR

There's a place in, I think, New Jersey, called Essex Camera Repair.
They claim that they can repair anything from the classic cameras to the
modern digitals.

Jim A.

Does anyone know somewhere that will attempt to repair a Pentax Auto-110
(actually Auto-110 Super)? I have one that froze up last year and I have
not been able to find anyone who will undertake to repair it.

I had not used it in a while, six months or more, and decided to play
with it. I put fresh batteries in and a new film cartridge. The first
time I tripped the shutter it froze with the shutter closed and the
 mirror up.

The only thing I have done to it since is to try another fresh set of
batteries in hope that was what caused the problem.

My wallet is not happy with this announcement of non-trivial, yearly
 updates.

Now you know how it feels to have bought into Canon.
Of course, you don't have to buy a new camera every year, just because
 they
make a new one that often.

The announcement says 10 lenses this year. But the lens map shows only
five being released this year. The other five lenses are on the map, but
without release dates. I think we might see the DA 35 macro this year,
since there is a mockup of the lens. The first two DA* zooms will be
 released within a few days.

Pentax acknowledges the product supply problem. How can that be resolved
with such an aggressive schedule of new product launches?

 Samsung production facilities?

Pentax's RD staff are depressed. This is not good news. The interview
says it is because of the production shortages. But I would not imagine
that this would bother engineers that much. Production shortages show
that their product is appreciated. How could this depress them? I
suspect it could be because Pentax released the K10D with glitches. It
was so close to being perfect, yet many posts are about its problems.
 Just my speculation.

At some point, a product has to be released tot he market. If the
 engineers
couldn't meet the release deadline, even one which gets pushed back
continuously (it's a habit of theirs, from what I have seen), then they
 have
a problem to resolve at the engineering level.
There wasn't enough wrong with the K10 to have warranted another release
 delay.

Re: M42 digital camera ( was 85mm f1.8 SMCT on ebay : $400+

2007-02-20 Thread japilado
There's a company that makes stereo cameras by mating two 35mm SLRs
together. The lenses are identical, and hooked together so that the user
can zoom at the same time and focus at the same time. The RBT camera is
expensive, but a few members of my stereo club have purchased these
cameras. Don't know how profitable it is to make these cameras.
I have a nice collection of M42 lenses that I can use with my *ist D. I
agree that it is a long shot that a digital M42 body will be made. If one
is made, what price would M42 lens owners be willing to pay for one?
The RBT stereo slrs can cost up to $4,000 USD. Is that too high a price
for an M42 digital camera?

Jim A.

Although it would be pretty cool if it happened, I don't think an M42 dSLR
has a snowball's chance in hell of being made. Why? Simple answer: old
technology just doesn't sell well. Modern consumers want convenience, and
as far as cameras go, that means full automation, including autofocus.
Those of us with an appreciation for the past are too few in number to
 make
 an M42 dSLR camera profitable.

And really, the bottom line here is profitable.

I could give more reasons, if you'd like, but don't take this as an it's
 a
stupid idea! response. I think it'd be pretty cool, as I said, just not
 economically feasible.

Was the Tokina a mirror lens? Wasn't able to see the comet because of
clouds in my area. Now, I understand, you have to travel to the
southern hemisphere to see it.

Jim A.

I left work around 4:00 PM yesterday. Zipped to the local department store
to pick up a cheap pair of binoculars and a compass (I hate when I forget
 things at home).

My goal was to find an unimpeded view of the south-south-west horizon. I
started driving to the local ski area above Boise. As I suspected, the
 best
view was from the top (where the road ends) at the base of the ski area.

It was very cold, around 13F. There was only about 1/2 hour of time from
when the comet became easily visible, between sunset and the setting of
 the
comet. Fingers so numb I couldn't feel the dials on the camera.
 Fingertips
still hurt four hours later and actually are a little tender feeling even
 now.

Here's one shot, a 50% crop, fairly noisy. Curves adjustements performed
 and
USM that didn't do much before it started degrading the image. I've got a
few others I may try to work with that include the horizon. It was
 exciting
to see and worth the effort regardless of the quality of the images.

127 roll film slide, a.k.a. superslide. I had a gray Baby Rolleiflex
that took 127 size film. I loved the large slides you could get from
Ektachrome 127 film. You could load the 2X2 size mounts in a slide
projector and get the most amazing image on a screen. At some gift shops,
say, in national parks, you could always find superslides for sale.

Jim A.

My sister in law asked me to scan some old 35mm slides, which of course
is no problem. But I wasn't expecting 35 mm _square_ exposures:

 http://www.markcassino.com/temp/IMGP2607.jpg

That's a modern 35mm exposure on the right.

She also had several medium format 6x6 cm slides, probably taken in a
TLR of some sort. Are these 35mm square slides some format I never heard
of, or are they perhaps crops from medium format transparencies?

Fortunately, the Epson flatbed should be able to scan these slides - the
Cano-scan would chop off the tops and bottoms.

I'm new to the list. I haven't found this discussed in the archive ...

The CR-V3 batteries Pentax recommends for the *ist-D cost an arm a
leg, so I've mostly been using Ni-MH AAs to power the camera. The AAs
don't seem to give very good performance. When I install freshly charged
batteries, the battery status display shows the half battery indicator
the instruction book says is low battery. I actually get better
 performance from AA alkaline batteries.

I've looked on the web for CR-V3 rechargables found some, but I also
ran into advice to check with the camera manufacturer before using them.

Haven't heard anything back from Pentax yet, so I thought I'd ask here.
Does anyone have experience using CR-V3 rechargables in the *ist-D? If
so, what was the experience like, and is there a brand/model you'd

 The whole set:

Very happy so far, and I think I can live with the gap between 21
 43. (I'm praying for a fast 28mm though!) The ability to use 800asa
and 1/15s without a worry is liberating, coming from slides + ka-thunk
and digicams. So much more marginal light becomes usable.

I've even got used to which way you twist the lenses on. Although
putting on rear caps one-handed still takes me two tries.

A plug for Citizens Photo in Portland, Oregon. They are a small business
that has been around for over 20 years. It sells Pentax equipment. I

Jim A.

The photographic industry needs your support right now, and I'd like to
 take
a moment to convince anyone who is willing to listen why you're better off
buying from local camera shops than internet sites or big box stores.

When you buy something from a local store, there are two major advantages
for your community (this is from a US point of view, so things may be
slightly different elsewhere). First, your money is supporting local
businesses and jobs, and it stays local. It doesn't go to some corporate
headquarters on the other side of the country. Second, the taxes you pay
support your local municipalities, such as schools and fire stations.
Buying online does not support any of these services, which you may need
 some day.

Buying local can also be more convenient in the event you need any sort of
customer service. The fact that you can talk to someone face to face
 means
you can usually get your problem solved in a more timely manner. At the
very least, having a local specialty shop to go to usually means a large
portion of the staff knows what they're talking about, and since they want
to keep you as a customer they will usually do what it takes to make you
 happy (managers especially).

Big box stores (by which I mean places like Fry's, Best Buy, Wal*Mart,
 etc)
and internet stores don't care about the customer; they usually care more
about sales volume. Their prices are low because they move so many items
they don't need a large profit margin on most things. Their prices are
 also
low because their staff is often not as knowledgeable about the products
they sell as staff are at specialty shops, like the one I used to work at.
In other words, the box stores tend to hire cheap labor.

A lot of internet stores sell low-quality accessories at high markups
because they know the customer won't know what they're getting till it
arrives in the mail (it comes with a memory card? great!). I know a
 lot
of PDML members probably wouldn't fall for that, but it something a lot of
everyday buyers have no clue about.

There are plenty more reasons for shopping at local stores and specialty
shops, but suffice to say, if you want local camera shops to exist AT ALL
 in
the future, please consider buying from them in the present. Yes, you'll
probably pay a little more, but it's worth it in the long run.

 Isn't it?

 John Celio
(if it weren't for so many people buying online and at big box stores, I'd
probably still be working at Reed's)

T 90

2006-10-14 Thread japilado
I bought a T90 because it uses AA batteries. Once I got it in my hands I
realized how great a machine it is. I have four FD lenses for it. I
also own a Canon EOS-RT, the one with the pellicle mirror. I have never
moaned that I couldn't use the FD lenses on it. I got a couple of zooms
for the RT that I now use with my first dslr, the D30.

Jim A.

Yes. The T90 was a highly desireable camera on the used
 Market a while back ( still is? I don't know ).
I suspect that all of the mint to near mint high
End film bodies for FD are still worth good money
Even in thise ere of EOS and DSLRS.

 1. Only one body, and it was the cheapest. They killed the F1 and the
T90, T80 and T70 off almost immediately after the EOS introduction.
Can't sell what you don't make.

It was an economic decision for sure.
Force the FD users to buy into a new system, and hope that they aren't
too pissed off to buy another Canon.
A friend of mine had a T-90, which was very similar to one of the early
EOS camera bodies, as you may recall.
It stopped firing the flash at some point not long after the
introduction of the EOS, so he sent it to Canon Canada for repair. They
sent back a basket case (literally, I saw the thing, it looked like a
goat had exploded in the box), and told him it was unrepairable.
They offered him a good price on an EOS camera body as a goodwill
 gesture.

The T-90 suited his needs very well, he didn't need or want the new AF
technology, or the new and improved interface. He wanted to use a metal
bodied lens with good manual focus feel.
Canon's lack of support didn't go over well with him.

Re: Shot my first roll of film in ages.

2006-10-05 Thread japilado
I own a Medalist II. I haven't used it in years. I have one negative of
a sunset photo that I took at Oregon's Cannon Beach over 35 years ago. I
still get georgeous enlargements from it.
My favorite vintage medium format camera is an Omega 120. The Omega was
built in the U.S. and was the forerunner to the Koni-Omega cameras. What
was unique about the Omega was that pressing on the shutter release also
put pressure on the plate behind the film so that it force the film flat
against the focal plane. Unlike the Koni-Omegas, the Omega 120 didn't
have interchangeable lenses.

Jim A.

About a year ago I enabled myself with a Kodak Medalist II and bought
some re-spooled 120 film to test it with. After hearing so much talk
lately about medium format shooting I finally got around to running a
roll of TMAX 100 in the Medalist, the negatives, at least the ones that
I managed to expose properly, look gorgeous. There are a few quirks to
this camera I'll have to get used to. Now I have to figure out how I'm
going to print them since I no longer have a darkroom and there's no way
these will fit in my 35mm film scanner. By the way, does this make me
an axillary member of the brotherhood?

RE: OT - new Oly takes xD and CF

Amen to that. The Pentax designers could care less about accomodating
owners of the *ist D, like myself, who have several CF cards. Lack of CF
card slot, and the change to non-AA battery power is the big turn-off for
me on the top-of-the line K10.

Jim A.

It's about half the size of a SD card. But that doesn't matter as far
as the point people were making about the Pentax is concerned. If a
camera as small as this Olympus can take a CF card and a XD card, then
a slightly larger camera like the Pentax should in principle be able
to take a CF and SD card.

My E500 also takes XD and CF. not that I have any CF cards.

Re: SF1n compared to MZ5n

2006-09-11 Thread japilado
I never liked the SF1 or the SF1n when they came out. I looked at a Canon
EOS-RT and liked the feel and operation of that camera. I eventually got
that camera. Much later, I bought the PZ1n. Much better camera compared
to the SF series. Still have the RT because I like the pellicle mirror
feature that prevents the blackout in the viewfinder when taking a
picture.

Jim A.

I am considering unloading some of my Pentax film cameras and redundant
lenses. Last month got a D200 at work and already own or have access to
medium format SLR and TLR plus several large format systems so unlikely
need four Pentax 35mm bodies for black and white or occasional slide
 shooting.

I am going to sell my very first camera (unless you count an Instamatic
104 which I hardly used) a Spotmatic F which we bought new in 74. We also
own two SF1n and one MZ5n. When looking at some retail second hand prices
I noticed that there was only about $20 difference between the SF1n and
the MZ5n. As the latter is at least one generation newer and has faster AF
does the small price difference relflect that these stores have a minimum
price and the MX5n is just above it? Am I missing something on the
differences between the two cameras? Am not intending on selling the MZ5n,
at least not yet so just curious. I am aware that I should not expect to
receive the same price that a retailer would get .

I had thought about getting the K10D but as I do have access to the D200
and better lenses than I can afford for the Pentax, I will skip getting it
at least for now. Might think about getting a used DS or DS2 next spring
as by that time I should have sold enough photo gear and non-photo stuff
to pay for it without any out of pocket expenses. Especially since I have
talked myself out of a large format lens that used would have cost about
the same as the upcoming K10D. If/when we get a DSLR Pentax will probably
sell one of the two remaining film bodies and keep only the one, most
likely the MZ5n. Only reason I know of keeping the SF1n instead is wife
has never used the Mz5n and has used the other for 15+ years.

I hope that those who do buy the K10D get everything they want but for now
a “free” D200 is a better bargain. Certainly like the D200 better than the
 D1X it replaces.

 Does such a thing exist?

When I was at the last Twins Days convention, I found that during the
evenings when I was bumping around the bar, drinking and talking and
(occasionally) taking pictures, the istDS with the Sigma flash on it
was so big that I got annoyed with them. I ended up more than once
setting my camera down for hours at a time because it was getting in
my way. But I missed a lot of fun shots because of that. :-(

I think what I want to have, someday, is something that takes
decent snapshots but can just fit in a little case on my belt, or
in a front pocket. But since it would only be used for the
gathering in a bar kind of situations, I don't want to drop a lot
 of money on it.

Is there anything out there that a person can get NEW for less than
 $200 that doesn't completely stink?

I don't think I would even need more than 4 megapixels for that kind
of shot. Maybe I should be looking for something used. Suggestions?

I told him about the backwards comaptibility - how he could use 50 year
 old
lenses, with certain limitations to functionlity.
A member with a Canon 20D said Oh, Canon's can do that too. So, they
decised to try it right away.
The test came to a very quick stop, as it was not possible to even mount
 the
old Canon lens on the 20D body ;-)

Re: So. Whos getting the K10d right away or are we waiting.

2006-07-14 Thread japilado
I balked at buying the *ist D when it came out because of the lens
compatibility issue. Eventually, I did buy one, and got use to the
green button with older K-mount lenses. I would love to see full
compatibility with the K10, but if it doesn't happen, and the price of
the camera isn't too high, I might purchase one.
Jim A.

The istD came out and every one balked or held out. Then WW
 bought one and
 gave a favorable review. Then,
slowly alot of PDMLers came over to digital(i already had my D1 at this
 time).

Now that we have seen the istD/DS/DS2/DL will we be waiting to see if
 there are problems,
or will we dive in head first when
 they hit the stores.

I for one will wait a bit. Still smarting from the D2H header i made.:-)
 but i'm sure i;ll
ge one just for the is.

 Just curious is all.

Re: My two cents on monopods

2006-07-12 Thread japilado
I purchased an item called a Trek-Pod. It doubles as a walking staff,
but it can also be used as a monopod, or, get this, a tripod. The lower
part of the Trek Pod has the three legs held together by a velcro strip.
You can unlock the legs by pulling the strip off. The head of the Trek
Pod is a ball head. The camera is held on the ball head using a magnet.
Everytime I use it, I get a lot of comments on it. Two friends have
purchased one for their use.

The proper way to use a monopod is to angle it forward, and then lean

Putting the camera on the top of the unit precludes you from being able
 to
lean into it on anything except upward facing shots.

..and portrait shots are almost completely out of the question!

I've been cut-off about three times.

Jim A.

Is anyone else frequently getting their PDML subscription
 suspended for excessive bounces?
It's happened 4 times now for no apparent reason.
I seem to be getting most/all messages when I compare
 mine to the archive.
Makes it impossible to follow threads when you keep
getting kicked off and have to re-subscribe, go to the
archive, and try to fill in the holes. :-(

Re: SD to CF card adapter

That adapter looks like one that fits into the PC card slot on my old Mac
Powerbook. Don't think it will fit into the *D - too large.

My photodealer found this one for me. It seems that the adapter can
 totally
 contain the SD card ?
Does anyone have any experiences with this, please?
If I can put the whole combo into my D, it means I will only need ONE type
 of card for my DSLR's?

Re: Question: Should I sell my MZ-S?

2006-05-15 Thread japilado
I put two ES II cameras to a new use - stereo photography. I attach both
cameras to a long bracket and place them close together so that the 50 mm
lenses are slightly over two inches apart. I use the hyperfocal method to
focus the cameras, and operate the shutters using a double-cable release.
The system is heavy, but I now have a new use for these two classic
Pentaxes. I take slides that I mount myself.

Jim A.

It's a question I've been pondering for some time so I thought I'd
open it up to discussion and debate. Let's stir the pot, rock the
 boat, muddy the waters, etc.

Much as I love my MZ-S, I've noticed that I just don't use it any
more. I shoot digital for the most part. When I shoot film, it's
almost always BW, which means I use the 645. And on the rare
occasions when I *do* shoot 35mm color film, I find it's the MX I
reach for. Small, light, simple, manual, unhurried, untechnological -
that's what I'm looking for on those occasions.

So the result is that I have this superb, ergonomic, high-tech,
magnesium-bodied gem gathering dust most of the time and that bothers
me. I know there are probably photographers out there who would
actually *use* this camera. But I haven't been able to bring myself to
 sell it.

Factors making me want to keep it:
 1) I love the way it feels and works.
 2) I probably couldn't get much for it these days.
 3) It's the ultimate (in the true sense of the word) Pentax high-end
film camera. The last of a thoroughbred line.

I should probably look around and see what used ones sell for these
days, but whether the price is high or low, it would probably make me
 both happy and sad...

Re: Photographing Egypt

2006-05-13 Thread japilado
I recently traveled to Italy. I took along 3 rolls of ISO 100 slide film
(shot mainly digital, but wanted slides, too) that were scanned several
times at certain museums, and, of course at airports. I kept the film in
my camera bag that I had with me all of the time. The slides looked
normal after I processed it.

Jim A.

 Hi Folks,
I'm going to Egypt in a few days, and -- since I haven't been quite
convinced to switch to digital -- I have some questions about film and
such. First, what is the current situation with airport x-rays? I had
heard that any film below about 800 would be fine, but a NG guide I
recently looked at said today's carry-on baggage zappers are so powerful
they'll cook film of any speed. Other options are to have the film hand
inspected, or buy it when I get there. Does anyone have first hand
experience of this? Are most airports willing to hand-inspect film? Does
anyone have a favourite Cairene photography store that sells 100 asa
 slide film?

Any other advice about film for a trip like this or general tips on
traveling with cameras would be welcome too.

 Thanks,
 Adam

cool stuff we had before someone decided it would be a good idea to let a

The designer of the original 'colourfull' series from the seventies (the
first 10 and 1000 guilder notes on the site are from this series) actually
used monopoly money as an inspiration: he reasoned bright colours would
make the money more user-friendly. He was right.

Re: Upcoming 10 Mpixel DSLR

2006-03-19 Thread japilado
That's what I like about Canon when they come out with improvements on
their DSLRs - they maintain the CF card useage.
I bought into a *ist D and got a few 512 CF cards. Looks like Pentax
doesn't care for the *ist D users and the investments they made for that
camera.

Jim A.

 Judging from the photos here:
   www.dpreview.com/articles/pma2006/Pentax/
I'm guesstimating the upcoming (??) 10 Mpixel DSLR from Pentax/Samsung
 will
take SD cards, NOT CompactFlash cards (and, therefore, not MicroDrives).
 Anyone concur/disagree?

Not having to pay for film and processing probably paid for my camera!!
