Processing C-41 yourself in any format is easy, in my book easier than
b/w because you don't need endless tables of dilutions, times and
temperatures. With C-41, everything is done with the same parameters. It
can be done at home with little more than a developing tank, a bucket of
warm water, a thermometer and the C-41 chemicals.

E6, however, is another thing, not least because it requires very tight
temperature control. If there is no local lab to process it you will
have to send it in for processing.

I charged up the K5 and checked that it still appeared to be in working order).

I was never a frequent contributor to the PUG, but during that time there have
been a few galleries where I would have been tempted to submit something.
I know I'm not the only PDMLer who has, for various reasons, switched to a
different brand. I may be using an Olympus now, but I still think of myself

Shooting film these days is a whole different kettle of beeswax to the old

A waterproof Pentax compact is one of the few cameras I have bought new as my

to use it to document her progress through swimming lessons and various

equipment update, QNAP NAS

2024-06-05 Thread Larry Colen
I had posted a while back that I had been having issues with my OWC thunderbolt
drivebay and was looking to upgrade. A friend offered me a good deal on his
QNAP 458a 4-bay NAS.

I loaded it up with four 16T WD drives as RAID 5 and 16G of RAM, which gives me
something like 43T of storage. I copied my photo files over, pointed lightroom
at it rather than the OWC and found all the missing images in my backup and
everything catalogs .

TLDR; Using it as my primary storage doesn't work. It might be possible to
get it to work, but with Macos losing connection to it, the slower speeds and
related, it was just too painful. It does seem to work very well as first
level backup and gives me a NAS for up here. My old synology 4bay is in Felton
as offsite storage of everything up to about a year ago. I also have other
drives to use as second and third level backup down here.

It would be really nice if it also had a way of connecting to the computer
directly as an external drive rather than only a NAS.

I'm luke warm on it as a NAS, it has a lot of features that I don't need, and
I haven't really spent the time and effort to learn my way around it. It is
also quite a few years old, but I think it may have the current UI.

By plugging into the OWC via USB 3 rather than TB my computer doesn't crash
nearly as often. I had previously solved this problem by disabling something
about sleep, but with the latest version of Monterey the problem has returned.

Hopefully I won't run out of space on the OWC until I have the resources to
replace both it and the trashcan mac I'm using to process photos. The longer I
can put that off the more processing power I'll be able to get for my dineros.
I may be forced to do something before too long because I'm running up against
end of life of LR running on a version of Macos that will run on the trashcan.

I see a couple of options.

You could use the PUG as an excuse to grab the K-5 and give it some exercise.
I know that the 16-50 doesn't like to be left fallow too long, the K-5 probably
prefers to get a bit of exercise now and then too.

You could put the PK adapter on the OM-1 and get some shots using Pentax glass.

You could start an APUG, alternative PUG. Perhaps one with a simplified user
interface that required less moderation, but some sort of password (could be
the monthly topic) to keep spammers out.

You could just enjoy the photos that other people do post, that were taken with
Pentax gear.

I kind of feel guilty that I never get around to even looking for something to
post in the PUG, even though I often look at it and realize I already have a
very topical image in my collection.

Is there a list anyplace of all of the historical PUG topics?

Nothing stops me from posting old photographs - I shoot significantly less
than some people here, so I've got every digital image I took available.
(And boxes of slides, negatives, etc., very few of which have been scanned).
But that doesn't help me get to be a better photographer. I sometimes used
the PUG topic as a way to prompt myself out of my comfort zone and try some
shots I'd never have thought of myself. Much of the time it didn't result
in anything I wanted to show anybody else, but there were occasions when I
came up with something I was pleased with, and even a few times when I ended
up with an image I felt was worth submitting.

What keeps you from posting photos shot while you were using Pentax gear?

I haven't been able to take any new photos for the last two years and my
days as a 'picture taking' photographer are over but I still have tens
of thousands of RAW and scanned analog photos to sift through and quite
a few to publish.

Just go and have a look on your drives.

Unfortunately I suspect the number of contributors will continue to decline.

It's been 2 1/2 years since I picked up a Pentax (except for yesterday when
I charged up the K5 and checked that it still appeared to be in working order).

I was never a frequent contributor to the PUG, but during that time there have
been a few galleries where I would have been tempted to submit something.
I know I'm not the only PDMLer who has, for various reasons, switched to a
different brand. I may be using an Olympus now, but I still think of myself
as a PDMLer; I haven't even looked for an Olympus User's Group I could join.

Maybe it's time to add a section to the PUG for images created with non-Pentax
gear. Or maybe it isn't - I don't know hom many other non-Pentax using PDMLers
are still around.

The two are not mutually exclusive. To be honest the K-3III is pretty close to
as good in low light, but is better at focusing.

This is after adjusting the color balance in lightroom. The color temperature
slider is pegged at 2000K, and on some of them I tried to get even more
adjustment with the brush, to no avail.

Larry, you may be complaining about the focusing of the K-1, however
these pictures show again how good this camera performs in low light

It looks to me that with saturation or point color in Color Mixer of LR

Well Larry, as Ralf says, you did a good job and really captured the
atmosphere. I must say I prefer the monochrome images. We haven't been
to a function like that for many years. They do occasionally have dance
evenings out here in the sticks but it is all Boeremusiek! (You can look
that up!)

PESO It's all about that bass

2024-06-02 Thread Larry Colen
I got a chance to play with my K-1 last night. I realized that I hadn't tried
the 85/1.4 out photographing musicians, and since there was going to be a live
band at the milonga last night, I spent a couple tandas playing with them. The
lighting was exceptionally challenging, there are several frames where it was
impossible to bring the color balance back in line using lightroom.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/53764880261/in/album-72177720317540461/

Moving back to the K-1 after the K-3iii and the OM-5 I did notice how long it
takes to bracket multiple frames, also how slow focusing is. I would really
love a K-1 with all the upgrades from the K-3 III and a faster bus for saving
files.

I just realized that I forgot to apply Lightroom Noise Reduction before posting
the photos. Not something I'd dare to forget with the OM-5.

In your collection of “old dead tractors”, this shot : 20240527-P5270049 of a
Farmall … In the 1950-51 era, my dairy farmer grandfather bought his first
(used) tractor, transitioning from work horses and eventually freeing up room
in his barn for an additional three milking stations. The tractor was my first
experience driving a motorized vehicle. He would never have allowed his tractor
to get to the stage of disrepair as the one in your photo! Thanks for a trip

Status Update K-3 repairs and OT photos

2024-05-31 Thread Larry Colen
I decided that since the OM-5 works OK for carrying on my bike, I was better
off getting the K-3III repaired while I'm in a photographic lull, lest I find
something else critical that is wrong when I absolutely need it, and then find
out that it'll take weeks or months to get it repaired. So, I sent it to
Precision, their estimate is now up to $683, and it turns out that the parts
are on back order for a week or two. So, yeah.

I've had a few chances to go on bike rides and am becoming more familiar with
the OM-5. It really does make me appreciate the Pentax UI. A few years back I
commented that when processing photos, comparing my APS Pentax with a friend's
full frame Nikon, I could get similar quality with the Pentax, but that the
files "felt more brittle". I'm running into the same thing with the OM-5, only
more so, it feels like I have very little extra dynamic range to work with.

On my bike ride Monday, I found a place of Reche canyon where someone has
collected a bunch of old dead tractors and just has them sitting around, and
rather than a No Trespassing sign, his signs simply say that if you get hurt,
you can't blame him. I had just photographed this yellow tractor when a bright
pink "honey bucket" truck was driving past, so I had to grab another shot:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/53755809787/in/album-72177720317430356/

In other news, I needed to upgrade my local storage and a friend offered me a
QNAP 435A 4-bay NAS. I bought it, and some refurb/returned 16T drives off
Amazon. With RAID 5 it gives me almost 43 TB, which is nice, about twice my
current photo library. I'm trying to point my Lightroom Library at it, and I
dunno if it is the QNAP, my trashcan mac, or whether using a NAS over a 1G net
but while things seem to work, they aren't, as yet, working well.

Stunning stuff in the first one. I'm intrigued by the giant gatepost; amused
by the stickers; flabbergasted by the final image of the glaciated landscape.

The Cumbrian ones seem, in contrast, much more intimate. Especially with a
Llama. BTW, I have a historian friend who reckons those circular sheep pens
are probably the oldest continuous use structures in the UK. You certainly
have an eye for an image.

Stan, I now have a surge protector / uninterruptible power supply for my
computer, and a surge protector for our mini split AC/heating system (whose
board also got toasted). Alas our electrician fell ill and went out of
business, and we haven’t identified another one yet to put in a surge protector
for the rest of the house.

A long delayed OT comment re your power surge and related computer issues…

Several years ago our trusted local electrician installed a whole-house surge
protector. A relatively small attachment on the main panel. I think it has
worked properly, we’ve had no issues even when neighbors were having storm
surge problems.

Nice collection.

Rue du Bac... When I lived in Paris, the line through the tunnel to the

rolling stock and the drivers loved to accelerate to the max on the way

Just been soaked by trying (and failing) to rescue the canvas roof of the
gazebo which must have had in excess of 200lbs of water gathered in it.
Managed to push it partway to the edge when rrriip and cold shower
time. My ecological consultancy did work in Carlisle about a decade or so ago
after much of the town was flooded. Home to the only known urban colony of
brook lampreys in the UK, as we discovered, so mitigation was quite
comprehensive. Even so, new, one metre higher, flood walls were built - which
came within 10cm of overtopping within the year. It's not a problem that will
go away. Fingers crossed for tomorrow. Shout if things go sideways.
