Re: Decisive moment available to everyone now!
I don't think that's entirely true. This is a leveler. There's a saying supposedly from the Old West, God created Men, Sam Colt made them equal. In a fight with clubs the bigger heavier opponent has an advantage in a fight with guns, a lot of that advantage goes away. Let me tell a story, a few years ago, I visited some friends in Florida, and we had a day trip to a baseball spring training camp. The nice thing about spring training is that you get to see actual pros in a park with less strictures than AA ball, and for my purposes at least, the pitcher wasn't trying quite so hard to keep the batter from actually getting a hit. I planted myself on the sidelines pretty much just off the third base line, and shot few rolls of B trying to get the moment when the batter connected with the ball. I kind of know baseball, used to watch a lot of AAA games, so I know at close range what to look for when the batter is actually going to take a swing. I'm not a award winning sports photographer, but out of my four rolls or so of film I managed to get one shot where the batter connected, and a couple just after. (damn, I really wish I knew where the negatives got to at this point). I was shooting with an LX and the power winder and 300mm f4.0. I got three almost shots and one good one out of four rolls of film. All I had to do was hit the shutter button when the batter started to move. With the Sony I'd have gotten pretty much all of them closer than my three misses. Re: Decisive moment available to everyone now!
Yes, but it doesn't take nearly as much skill. That's half what big name sports photographers used to get paid for, the knowledge of the sport, not just where to point the camera, someone with a bit more than passing knowledge can do that, but when press the shutter to capture the best possible shot. Hell I remember when you had to focus the lens yourself and a lot of newspaper sports photogs actually used Spotmatics rather than Nikons because they were light weight, and the extras the Nikon gave didn't help all that much. Now I'm not saying we should go back to the good ol' days they kinda sucked. But now we've actually reached the point where in, the minds of upper management, a monkey can take the shot, and now they're almost right. Shocking indeed! Without a direct earth the Al body would remain charged for some time. Composites used to make light aircraft have metal strands woven in. Alan C -Original Message- From: Daniel J. Re: OT: Decisive Moment
An amazing catch but I don't agree. The metallic body forms a Faraday Cage so the lightning bolt would pass around (not through) the exterior of the body & then to earth. The passengers would be quite safe. Alan C -Original Message- From: Daniel J. We just returned from our month in Maui, and the book was here waiting for me. All I can say is WOW! I have only been able to leaf through it quickly, but it is a beautiful and impressive volume. I will have to spend a few hours tonight and tomorrow (a holiday here in the US) looking over the many intriguing and astonishing image. Well worth the money, indeed. Times, AP, BBC, USA Today, etc. In today's on-line USA Today, Sports section, there is a story about the Heat vs. Spurs NBA Championship game last night. The Heat was losing, made a last-gasp shot to tie and send the game into overtime. Heat is ahead, the OT is about to end, the Spurs try a last-gasp shot to tie and go to a second OT. I only started to have this problem after I realized that shots of monuments and architecture can be improved by including some anonymous people for scale and interest. Prior to that random passers-by filled my shots when I was trying to get a de-peopled scene. Re: Decisive moment
In my workshops on Dance(rs) and Photograph(er)s I always encourage photographers to be courteous and to pay attention to [other] dancers and other photographers. At various dance events, I've seen some official event photographers who were very courteous not to block/cross the path of others without need (or sit right across from you with his flash firing at you), and I've seen those who are totally oblivous (such as choosing a position with her flash right in my lens, shooting the entire stretch of competitions or performances (10-20+ minutes) and not moving an inch to a side (while she had a possibility to move around freely - because of her status, and I was locked in)). I understand that when you are on a (sort of) assignment, - you are more concentrated to have the job done, and I always try to avoid being in their way. But I found that the overall behavior of such pros typically depends on the personality. I don't think I've ever had problems from those photographers who were freelancing/shooting for themselves, whether I was the official photographer or not. I find that these people tend to be more aware of others (including other photographers). Maybe I am just too critical... My 1DmII will do (allegedly) 8.5 fps but I hardly ever use that. In continuous mode there are two speed settings on the quick top- panel switches - high and low and the user can set the frame rates for both. I have high set at max and low set at 4 fps which is usually plenty. I don't use single frame, always 'continuous - low' which is easy to shoot single frames with. This is more like film cameras of old, as I can shoot and focus at the same time instead of waiting for silly focus confirmation beeps etc. The decisive moment is the best way to shoot as most would agree, but it depends on the situation, surely. I have photographed football (soccer) and with some scenarios it is better to use the machine gun due to the frequent unpredictable nature of the game. Sure, lots of it is quite predictable, like a corner kick, but the scramble in the goal mouth can be totally whacky and half the time the decisive moment turns out to be not when and where one expects. Machine guns at 8 or 10 fps will get the result most of the time. if you're making money selling pictures like this, it's a no-brainer IMO. -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche ||=|http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net

Re: OT: Don't ever miss the decisive moment
I used to leave my EOS1D in continuous mode, which is rated for 8 frames per second. And I got sick and tired of shooting that way. So I set it to single frame as something of an experiment. And I believe that my photography is improving because of it. Take the following example: In motor-drive mode I'd shoot 600+ images at a high school basketball game. Out of those 600 frames I'd get 10-20 keepers. Now in single frame mode, I shoot 60 images at a game and I still get 10 to 20 keepers. The only differences are that now each photo is a conscious act of creation (instead of spraying and praying), and I don't have to wade through 580 crap shots to find the good ones. Also, in my experience with motor drive, if I missed the best action with the first shutter press, then all the subsequent frames missed it too. I can't think of a single time where I got a good action shot out of a motor sequence. The frames were always one bit too soon or one bit too late. The only good thing that I think comes out of so many frames per second is that it means that in single frame mode the camera is ready to take another picture at my press of the button that much sooner. Re: OT: Don't ever miss the decisive moment
I tend to shoot single frames. Continuous mode doesn't require spray-and-pray shooting, although it's difficult no to if the camera is setup for 8fps (That's actually one reason I don't want a high fps camera, the other being the inherent audible noise, my 10D is rather quiet compared to a 20D, let alone a 1D). -Adam Nick Wright wrote: I used to leave my EOS1D in continuous mode, which is rated for 8 frames per second. Re: OT: Don't ever miss the decisive moment
Guess I should chime in a bit here. I just got back from shooting little league baseball. I do set the K10D to continuous but rarely machine gun. Pretty much I do that when I want an actual sequence of shots rather than just trying to get the 'moment' - like a slide into 2nd or 3rd or a pitcher in windup and throwing. The concept there is that most of the frames are good rather than boring or throwaway. However, I will say that there have been many times especially shooting something less predictable like soccer where I have missed the moment partly because I never really saw the moment. I could see sometimes getting an interesting shot in the bunch by machine gunning in the thick of the action. I don't shoot that way, but can see some logic in it. -- Bruce Saturday, March 10, 2007, 2:37:25 PM, you wrote: GD On Mar 10, 2007, at 2:26 PM, Cotty wrote: Good point. ... Cotty, machine guns would only fire as long as they have ammo, right? ;-) Boris Cotty wrote: On 10/3/07, Godfrey DiGiorgi, discombobulated, unleashed: Remarkable speed. In continuous mode there are two speed settings on the quick top- panel switches - high and low and the user can set the frame rates for both. I have high set at max and low set at 4 fps which is usually plenty. I don't use single frame, always 'continuous - low' which is easy to shoot single frames with.
