I still have several Kodachrome 64 cartridges for my Pentax Auto 110

Ektachrome, 1978

2013-02-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
Here's a 1978 Ektachorme that has largely resisted fading although it was
stored in the dark. I should add that some of the Ektachromes that I shot with
my Brownie Starflash in the fifties have faded a lot. This shot was taken for J
Walter Thompson, and it was probably my first paid photo assignment that wasn't
part of a journalism job. I used my Vivitar 20mm 3.5, which wasn't very sharp,
but I probably had it stopped way down in back. That's my undergrad alma mater,
Roosevelt University in the background. Brooksie spent some time there as well.
It's in Adler and Sullivan's late 19th century Auditorium Hotel building. The
building next door -- I think it's called the Fine Arts Building -- is even
older. Back then it housed the Studebaker Theater and a coffee shop on the
lower level frequented by students and the artsy set. The race car is a jet
powered dragster with some nice body work by an aluminum craftsman named Lee
Austin.

I suspect Ektachromes formula changed over the years. I think all of mine from
the seventies are in good shape. (I know the processing chemicals changed in
the mid seventies from E4 to E6.) Gamma Labs on the west end of downtown
Chicago processed all of mine.

Re: Ektachrome, 1978

2013-02-24 Thread Paul Stenquist
It was strictly an exhibition car, and there wasn't really a class for it.
Back then -- and perhaps still today -- there were rocket and jet powered
dragsters that only ran exhibitions. Most of the jets turned low seven second
elapsed times at about 270 mph. Some of the rockets turned 5 second elapsed
times at over 300 mph. This one was powered by a general electric jet engine I
believe, probably government surplus.

Yes it can still be developed. Whether the images are worth making your

Exposed roll or un-exposed roll?

If it's un-exposed, best let her keep her curio and you pick up a new

From that it looks like it is being replaced, not discontinued. Of course, I
am
aware that that is only a distinction if you love one of those films.

No, they're being discontinued. The 'Replacements' are all current films that
have been on the market for several years. That said, Kodak was a little
oversupplied with ~ISO100 slide films (IIRC there are 3 remaining in 120 and 4
in 35mm).

I thought it was because digital capture is rapidly replacing
transparency film. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I switched to Fuji slide film years ago, but I will miss HIE.

Kodak has been losing most of its money pursuing the no-profit and highly
competitive PS digital market rather than supporting their cash cow (Film,
which is solid, if diminished) and the actually profitable DSLR market.

Re: Kodak discontinues HIE and a bunch of Ektachrome

2007-11-09 Thread P. J. Alling
It is because MBAs use esoteric methods to come to the conclusion that
short term profits, (a 5 year time horizon usually), drive long term
goals. This is an example of that kind of thinking. If you're an MBA,
I'd like to say I'm sorry if you're offended, but I'm not. Since I cut
an pasted the quote from someone else's web site, I don't really care
that much. It will be changing some time soon anyway. Probably by
another O'Roarke quote but I've got my eye on one by Throup. This is
after all a mailing list. How much care should one give it?

Pontificating on the notion of who's to blame seems such a waste of
time. MBAs notwithstanding, the answer is all of us. If film was
still profitable, Kodak would be expanding its offerings. It is us,
the collective mass of all who do photography in whatever form, who
have told Kodak what is profitable by voting with our wallets.

Film has lost the incumbent seat it held for 100 years. Newer capture
media has taken its place. Film is dead. Long live film.

Film certainly is still profitable, at least for Fuji and Ilford, as
well as the smaller makers. It's not the dominant choice anymore.

But Kodak has done everything possible to drive film users away, with
its public statements as well as its handling of a number of products
(including two which were unique to Kodak. Those being Tech Pan and
HIE). As Kodak has made clear that they don't value film user's
business, said users have moved over to Fuji, Ilford and others for
their work. And the fact that many of Fuji's films in particular are
clearly superior in performance makes this all the easier. With HIE
dead, the only reason to shoot Kodak is the Portra NC's and Tri-X. And
the latter only for traditionalists.

I'm trying to decide if it's even worth shooting this stuff. I've got
several rolls of 120 size Ektachrome dated 1999. It's all e6
professional and it's been kept refrigerated. Anybody have any
experience shooting film this old, what the age effects are, how much,
(percentage since the initial speed ratings are all different) to
compensate for lost sensitivity, that sort of thing. Any suggestions
 would be appreciated.

I've shot stuff about as old as this that had an unknown to me history.
Although I'm sure there would be some differences to fresh film, I could not
see anything that made me want to check it against new film.
