For those not familiar with it, the infamous "Hana Highway" is a 64.4

Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. Although Hana is only about 52

Re: GESO: Maui Waterfalls

2020-03-14 Thread Ken Waller
Depending on the number of exposures taken you get images closer to the slow
shutter effect than the higher speed images. With fewer exposures there is
still detail in the water with less of the silky smooth water effect obtained
with the slow shutter process.
Try it, you might like it. I personally like it as it becomes less of a
documentary image and a little more artful but still recognizably as what your
eye actually sees.

Dan,

I really like the effect of the faster shutter speeds, especially in the fourth
one.

I also like the set overall! The people add scale rather than being a
distraction.

A polarizer might have helped tame the glare from the foliage, especially in
the later ones.

Rental cars are not supposed to take the back road from Hana, but they do.
If you break down on that stretch of road you may have to pay an exorbitant

Have you ever tried stacking short exposures over long exposures to get both
effects?

I recognize that many, if not most, serious photographers favor long
exposures when shooting streams and waterfalls. The effect is certainly
appealing and artistic. For some reason, I have always favored short
exposures because those images look more like what my eye sees. I also
like the patterns and textures falling water reveals when captured in short
exposures. Different strokes . . . .

In any event, some of these images required that I stand in the middle of a
narrow one-lane bridge, leaving little time to set up, as the Road to Hana
has local traffic as well as quite a few tourist vans and rental cars, some
driven by visitors of questionable ability.

For those not familiar with it, the infamous "Hana Highway" is a 64.4
mile-long (103.6 km) stretch of Hawaii Routes 36 and 360 that connects
Kahului to the town of Hana in east Maui. Although Hana is only about 52
miles (84 km) from Kahului, an uninterrupted car-trip takes about 2.5 hours
to drive, since the highway is very windy, narrow, and passes over 59
bridges, of which 46 are only one lane wide. There are approximately 620
curves along the Route, almost all of it through lush, tropical rainforest.
Many of the concrete and steel bridges date back to 1910. The return trip,
along the "backside of Maui," is like driving over a narrow dirt and gravel
washboard. It is not really dangerous, but can be somewhat exhausting. I
hit takes an additional 40 minutes getting to Kahului from where we stay,
and another 40 getting back There is much to see and photograph, and I make
the trip once every 3-5 years.

Thanks, Alan. Yes. one is a lot longer than the others, and further away
from my viewpoint, I didn't have the time to hike in to get a better
shot; as it is, the "Road to Hana," around the east end of Maui, is an
all-day trip, with limited time for stops and excursions. I spent some
extra time getting to Lindburgh's grave to leave a miniature Distinguished
Flying Cross medal, which is about all the two of us have in common.

Very nice, refreshing scenes, Dan. The one is quite high compared to the
others. In the Western Cape there are falls something like that - very
popular for the "sport" of Kloofing. Kloof is the Afrikaans word for a
ravine so the "sport" is basically jumping from the top of the fall into
the pool below. No doubt they do something equally as reckless over there?

Nice, they look inviting. With those high shutter speeds you are the anti Mark

Nice. Longer exposures (on the order of a second) would make them nicer still.
