I've seen them sold under a couple of different brand names, seem to
go for $270-400 brand new. It seems to be manual focus/auto exposure
(A-lens). Is this a cheap dog? A decent value for the money? Or a
 knockout sleeper deal?

I bought one recently. I know I said I wasn't going to, but the seller
offered a pretty good deal along with the Samsung 800mm mirror (just
before the price jumped because of our crap exchange rate).

Build quality no way compares with the FA*85, but it is quite a pleasant
lens to use. Reasonably well damped manual focus (you can feel some
tight spots in the helical, but at least nothing is loose). The gold
boilerplate is just a sticker and the lens hood, while functional, is
nothing on the FA massive hood. And, yes, despite the Nikon-looking
photo in the ebay shot, it does have an A setting,

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:ITitem=360119128836

Haven't got too many PESO-showable shots yet, but I'll see if I can put
some up (maybe even some direct comparisons with the FA). Quite nice
optically, including the bokeh. Rather flare prone, but that can have
some nice effects for portrature too. Not a knockout deal. But for
about a quarter of the price of the FA*, I'd say it was worthwhile if
you are in the market.

Pentax Forums has the usual mix of nimrods who would rather take a day to
get instructions spoon fed to them than RTFM, measurbators, some pretty
talented photographers and a troll (me).
If you hang around there long enough, you can figure out who's reports are
reliable and whose reports are of the it's shiny and I love it variety.
