I'm back ... sort of

2014-04-16 Thread John Sessoms
I had this idea that I could shut down my computers, disconnect
everything and move my desk away from the window air-conditioning unit
that gives me a headache when the cold air blows on the side of my head.
Swapping tables around to put my laser printer down on that end gives me
almost 5' of separation from the cold air vent.

It proved to be slightly more complicated than that, mostly involving
vacuuming behind where the desk & the printer table have been sitting
for a number of years.

The real problem was I got very sick Saturday evening, 102 deg fever &
I've been fighting off the ague and a lot of damn pain since then.
Fever's down to just under a hundred now.

Called for a doctor's appointment with the VA ... May 19 is the soonest
they can fit me in. If it gets too bad in the meantime I'm supposed to
go to the ER at one of the local hospitals (and pay out of pocket).

i don't think the 24-90 is especially sharp either.

My experience with this lens on my D is disappointing also. While
it's not a basket case, it's nowhere near as sharp as my FA24-90. I
carefully checked for element separation but can't see any evidence
of it. FWIW, my copy was made in Japan.

It's a KEH "Like New-" and is a beautiful piece.
I must say however that I am VERY disappointed with it's wide
open performance on the digital!
At f/4, from 50-70mm results are very soft and contrast is poor.
At 28-50mm results are unusable before f/5.6-8.
The lens looks perfect, no fog, haze or seperation. Everthing
is tight, mechanics seem sound.

I use mine on the *istD a lot, and frequently at large apertures because
I do so much of my shooting indoors, without flash.
I don't have as strong a reaction as yours to the results. I'd actually
have to go look through my images again to come up with an evaluation,
which I guess means that I haven't really noticed a problem.
When I have a chance, though, I will look again with your comments in
mind and see what I see.

Same story here, two days after I got the D I took the
28-70 out to try it and it had "expired". :-(
This new one sure isn't living up to its reputation.
Me thinks KEH is getting it back.

The copy I had was very good on film, it died about the time I acquired
the *ist-D.

Thanks Boris, this is a Vietnamese one.
Anyone heard of any major QC problems with those?

Don, I had this lens before separation got it... It worked perfectly
fine with my *istD... I did not perform any tests, but I was always
