Re: I'm back...with new pics

I think fill might affect some of the closer areas, but it would never
reach the top of the rocks and would render the shadows uneven. I did
brighten the shadows with the PS shadows and highlights tool, but
refrained from pumping them up a lot. Personally, I prefer the hard
light. It gives shape to the rocks and provides some dimension. Even in
my studio work I'm getting away from flat light or even -1 fill. For
example, this month's pug (which is a rather ordinary still life) is
lit with about -2 fill and some back light. I think it's more natural
and, to me, more interesting.

I like the canyon shot, though the light is a little hard. A couple
of times with smaller scale landscapes I've been tempted to try fill
flash - I wonder if it would work on a shot like that (or not be
powerful enough.)

Thanks Marnie,
I'm sorry you were offended by the shot of the young woman. However, I
suspect you were more offended by some of the slightly off-color
comments it provoked. I shoot some figure studies, very few of which
have been displayed here, and I find the human body to be a very
attractive subject. Although some here referred to the woman's garment
as underwear, it is in fact a bathing suit. I didn't think the shot was
particularly revealing or provocative, I just liked the composition of
her body, her bag, and her hand with the cell phone. It suggested a
kind of unashamed innocence to me. And of course it's very Southern
California. Again, I'm sorry if you were offended.

This is a terrific action shot. The way the water is cut, and the

with nice
frozen action. This looks like a shot in a sports magazine.

Thanks Marnie,
The canyon view may well have been better at a different time of day,
but I was on a 12 mile hike, and I was there at the moment. However,
due to the peaks on both sides, most of La Jolla Canyon is lit only

make the shadows softer in PhotoShop CS. It's quite good at that.
Perhaps I'll give it a try and post it again.

I really like the composition of the canyon shot, and the fact that you
have chosen a time of day when the light has been just right to show
detail in the shadows without overwhelming the highlights.

The beach shot appeals for primarily non-photographic reasons, and I never
noticed the cut-off head!

The texture, if that is the right word, of the water is fantastic in the
third shot. On my laptop monitor the picture slightly lacks punch. The
black isn't quite black enough. I'll have to try it on a CRT.
