Re: Lucky shot

2020-09-25 Thread Alan C
I have never bought a Lottery ticket on principle. It this corrupt
country the "charitable" funds are largely distributed to front and/or
fictional charities. Then, with 7 numbers, the odds are about 1 in 4m of
winning yet they regularly come up with several winners when only 20m
tickets are sold. In my mind the "winning" tickets are created after the
draw is completed. Many have complained & pointed out these
irregularities but nothing is investigated or done & the gravy train
rolls on.

With catching photos of meteors that’s true, the lottery however is just a tax
on people who can’t do math.

That rather depends on what happens to the profits. In the UK the National
Lottery funds a large number of causes that I consider to be good ones, so I
buy a ticket every week by direct debit, not in the expectation of winning many
tons of money that I wouldn’t know what to do with, but because it’s another
way to support these things, and I get the occasional thrill of winning a small
amount of money - £60- being the most so far, although I do know some who has
won tens of thousands, and deserved it.

FWIW I don't play seriously, just a quick round-the-clock session
during tea breaks.

I got bored with just aiming for each number in turn and decided to
try aiming for the triples. I was aiming for triple-9 that time. As

Re: PAW: a lucky shot

yeah, it's as good as the lens allows. if i didn't have the 80-320, i
wouldn't have had a shot at all, just a speck in the distance. there is a
slight bit of motion blur, but i was able to shoot at 1/1000 and that
helped. of the 24 shots i took, 5 are good and distinct enough to be usable
for stock photos of bald eagles in the area. i chose this one to display
specifically because of the connection from the chunk of fish in the beak
back to the body. my biologist friend says that it looks like a shad or a
shad-like fish.

Very good shot, especially considering the distance and limited time
and equipment you had. It's easy to get motion blur in those
conditions, but your shot appears as sharp as the lens would allow.

CAUTION, GORY PARAGRAPH:
Did you notice the little piece of meat in the beak has a thread
extending back to the body that hasn't popped free yet? I once had a
pic of a vulture in the road pulling an intestine from a road kill
skunk, he had it extended like a piano wire about three feet long.
Someone at my wife's work saw it and got me to make an 8x10 for them -
what taste, I thought.
END GORY PARAGRAPH.

Wouldn't it be great if those animals all stayed around long enough
for us to get in position for the good light, and acted as if we
really weren't there so we could move into position? And hung around
long enough for us to change to the good lens? Hmmm, I think I just
defined Zoo animals, or at least animals who are acclimated to human
contact, like this one, which was within ten feet of a patio with a
dozen picnic tables all full of people and kids wandering all around
the water's edge:

Kewl.

Marnie aka DoeHmmm, maybe saying Kewl is a waste of bandwidth.

little chance of that. the eagles are migrating north starting right about
now and won't be back until winter time. the ice on the lakes and rivers is
breaking up.

Probably trying to save the fish.

Very nice capture Herb. Keep that on your 'must return' sites.
