For those who have never used an EDM (electronic distancing machine), or total station sometimes erroneously called theodolites, there are some great features that would be handy on an SLR. (The one Cotty was looking at was indeed a normal theodolite). N***N supposedly has distance information incorporated into it's D-series (and newer) lenses, well an EDM has that too...only using a laser device to ensure millimeter accuracy. Range is normally in the order of 1000 metres, although parallax and haze can reduce this somewhat. Naturally, high-end EDM's have Autofocus, inbuilt computer data loggers to store shed loads of info, and compensators for vibration. Pentax are pretty strong in survey and GPS technology, so new developments of any kind indicated by patents could be applied in any area of the Pentax product range, not necessarily cameras. Wouldn't that freak folks out at demonstrations and/or political rallies though? Honestly officer, I really was only trying to take a photograph it's not a laser sight or anything.
