It is one of my most often used.  Many years ago I got an amazing deal on a dfa 
50/2.8 macro, and have hardly touched it.  On APS, I’m a big fan of the DA35 
macro as a walkaround lens.

One thing that it seems that people don’t consider is that angle of view is 
just as important for macro as it is for “regular” shooting, it’s just that 
with macro the AoV determines what is visible in the background, and I usually 
want to isolate my macro subjects from the background.  Given my choice, and 
unlimited budget, I’d probably opt for an even longer (150-200mm) macro.  All 
in all , the 100 macro is a wonderful lens.  

One nice thing about macro, is with a softbox on a speedlight (or any light 
source) it’s very easy to get Rembrandt lighting.  Even in the lighting you’re 
working with, you could put your flash on a cheap extension cable, put a 
softbox on it, and with it just a few inches away from the blossom, it’ll 
pretty much overpower the light in the shade.

I quite like it, especially with the cinderblocks out of focus in the 
background.


Some thoughts, purely from my own sense of aesthetics, feel free to ignore and 
disregard...
If you could come in a little closer so that it was only the flowers and the 
cinderblocks, and not the other leaves and flowers, I think it would be 
awesome.  Unfortunately, if you just crop it, you’d lose a lot of the 
cinderblock pattern.
