What we call Yellow Jackets are tiny wasps the size of a honey-bee or smaller. My experience with wasps it they're more or less docile unless you mess with them. Of course, their definition of "mess with them" is pretty broad, but they don't seem to be as aggressive as Yellow Jackets. Yellow Jackets are the worst. They'll attack just because they see you. OT: How to kill a wasp nest
After getting my smoker, I have rarely fired up my propane brazier. Last night I decided to use it. I took the cover off, fired it up and went back into the house too season some beef. When I went out a few minutes later to put the burgers on there were a few wasps buzzing around the back of the barbecue. By the time I went out to flip them, that number had risen to a dozen or more, and they seemed a bit angry.
