It looks like you took a photo of a carburetor (venturi?) for something 
that burns natural gas, propane or the like, and passed it through a 
high pass/edge detection filter.

John wins the prize.  In the days before engine driven vacuum pumps, a 
venturi was used to provide vacuum to spin up gyroscopic aircraft 
instruments - usually the attitude and directional gyros.  The down side 
was that the instruments didn't become "live" until you built up speed 
going down the runway and if you encountered icing conditions they iced 
up and you lost your instruments.
