Mute swans are much prettier than geese, but in some parts of the U.S.,
including Michigan, they’re just as much a problem. They are not a native
species but were introduced from Europe many years ago and are considered
invasive. They multiply rapidly and have squeezed out the native
 Trumpeter
swan. They’re also very aggressive and have been known to attack people
 who
get too close to their nests. They bite and slap with their wings, which
 are
powerful enough to break a man’s leg.

Swans are supposedly good to eat, allegedly better than their close
relative, the goose. Some states have opened a swan hunting season. But
 most
those who wish to dine on swan go for the smaller Tundra Swans.
 Butchering

Mute swans are much prettier than geese, but in some parts of the U.S.,
including Michigan, they’re just as much a problem. They are not a native
species but were introduced from Europe many years ago and are considered
invasive. They multiply rapidly and have squeezed out the native Trumpeter
swan. They’re also very aggressive and have been known to attack people who
get too close to their nests. They bite and slap with their wings, which are
powerful enough to break a man’s leg.

Swans are supposedly good to eat, allegedly better than their close relative,
the goose. Some states have opened a swan hunting season. But most those who
wish to dine on swan go for the smaller Tundra Swans. Butchering a Mute Swan
 is a big job.

Not good for gout, but you can find plenty of historical recipes for it. I
would imagine the gizards taste nice as a confit:

Salt 1kg if them abundantly and leave to marinate 12 hours. Rinse and drain
them. Warm 1kg of duck fat, add the gizards and add 3 cloves of garlic in
their skins, a sprig of thyme and a bay leaf. Simmer gently for at least 1
hour. Check they are cooked, then let them cool down.

These will keep, covered in the duck fat, for up to a fortnight in the fridge.

In Britain all swans bilong Mrs. Kwin and I don't think she lets us eat them.

Very nice. What was the range, Paul? You've inspired me to dig out my old

distant subject with the K7 see what happens. MF, of course. It will be
interesting to see if the AF confirm still works at f9 - f11.

Re: PESO Flying Rat, European Version

2014-03-23 Thread Alastair Robertson
correct me if I am wrong, but it is the maximum aperture of the lens
TC that matters on an automatic lens, not what you have stopped it
down to, since the AF is done with the lens wide open just before the
lens is stopped down and the shutter opens. So a setting of F22 on an
F5.6 setup will make no difference to the AF capability compared with
say F8. Putting a TC on a slow lens is a problem because even wide
open, the light levels are already too low for accurate AF. I doubt
whether Alan's F9-11 combination will allow AF because this is as open
as the lens can go

I may have had a couple of cocktails today, but I have no idea
what you’re trying to say here, and I doubt that total sobriety would help.

Mark!

The maximum aperture of the primary lens is only a guideline.

Very nice. What was the range, Paul? You've inspired me to dig out my old

distant subject with the K7 see what happens. MF, of course. It will be
interesting to see if the AF confirm still works at f9 - f11.

Cut and paste editing usually benefits from pasting. I cut out a big
part, and tried to rearrange my thoughts, obviously I failed in more
ways than one.
