Well, I've got to stick up for these guys. They're a bit ordinary in
appearance but 'ugly'? No way!!

I've got a bit of grudging respect for them - they're not especially big
but are very game and will see off much larger birds in their territory.
They also aren't shy about dive bombing anything else that they see as
threats - cats and dogs and the occasional human (as Rob found out).

The problem is that they tend to dominate an area so that very few other
species get a chance.

Excellent photo, Rob.

Thanks for commenting Ken, that was the only one of a quick series of
five that had the plane of focus anywhere useful. The little K-x
definitely does a good job on the exposure but I did have -0.3 EC
dialed in, the DR is where I'm mighty impressed especially at ISO1250.
The grate is actually the top (outside) of a bird cage, the very
limited DOF make is less of an issue I suspect.

I've seen a pair chasing a medium sized brown hawk of some kind and
when my neighbour used to bring his 6' diamond python up for a walk on
the nature strip my resident pair would go bananas, squawking and
diving the snake, pretty brave really.

The problem is that they tend to dominate an area so that very few other

Indeed, they are so territorial they basically drive all other birds
including the natives which can lead to bug and pollination
imbalances.

Sorry if you've come here expecting to see a carousing human who
spends much of his life underground - this is a photo of a bird.

This little guy was not long out of the nest and was still a bit
mystified by the world outside. The parents were not far away
screeching at me while their offspring posed for the camera.

Comments of all sorts welcome.

2006-03-12 Thread Brian Walters
Hi all

Thanks for all of the comments. Much appreciated.

Toine commented: I looks like the right 5-10 mm is photoshopped, if
so why?

Well spotted! I'll have to practise my image editing - there are
obvious repeating patterns on the extreme right. Basically it was a
balance issue. I didn't think there was quite enough space on the
right hand side for a 600 x 400 pixel crop, which is what I
standardise on for PESO contributions, so I expanded the canvas
slightly and cloned in the extra.

Ann asked about tech info. I should have mentioned it in the original
post that details can be seen by clicking on the i icon at the top

For those interested in the bird itself

Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala) - The noisy miner is a
medium-sized honeyeater which is well known throughout most of
eastern Australia. It is an aggressive, fearless bird that will
actively discourage other (often larger) birds from its territory.
This particular bird is a juvenile, not long out of the nest and
still retaining some downy feathers.

Me too - this little bloke was more cooperative than most.

Frank commented:

terrific composition.

Well - composition was helped by Photoshop! - see above..and, as has
been discussed, it would have been improved by more space top and
bottom. However, with wildlife luck plays a big role in the outcome
of the image, in my experience.

Very nice. I agree that the image is a little tight and needs more
background area. The highlights do not bother me at all. Usually the

Hi Bruce

Thanks - actually a summary of the details can be seen by clicking the
i icon. But, yes, I used an AF280T flash (TTL mode) with the Pentax
80-320 zoom on the DS. I quite like this lens even if it isn't quite
'top of the range'.

Cheers

Brian

 Hello Brian,

Great shot! Wonderful focus. I'm curious if you used flash on
 it.
 Care to share the details?

Hi Peter

Thanks

Yes - but not as noisy as the rainbow lorrikeets that fight with them
over the birdbath!

 they? :-)

Wow... sharp! Great detail and he's got a great pose too. Like Ken said, a
little more space around him (maybe a vertical composition) and less
background highlight would have made it perfect/

Thanks Christian

Comments much appreciated. Unfortunately not enough space top and
bottom for a vertical crop - maybe next time.
