I'm not leaving NY until Monday, but the gods have conspired to make sure I have no time at all for myself before leaving... so I'm pretending I already left :-) Sadly, part of this is because my friend Rita Norr Provost passed away yesterday after a long and miserable battle with brain cancer. For the handful of you who sort of trail along on my Scrabble life, she was the 1987 National Scrabble Champion - and the only woman to have won either a world or USA National Championship. Her funeral and wake are on Saturday and and old friend of ours is actually flying up from Florida for it and staying two nights with me. My Toronto friends were here for 5 days and were still here when I got the news about Rita. It wasnt unexpected, yet for some reason it hit many of use very hard... she was only 66... and battled this thing for gosh, over 4 years. If you saw WORD WARS or read WORD FREAK you know who she is.. and I know some of you are familiar with it.
