Thans for the pointer! Albano --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Having now looked at the article in the bookstore, I don't think it adds much if anything to these materials I've already collected from the Adobe site: Digital Workflow for Raw Processing by Jeff Schewe (four-part) A Color Managed Raw Workflow by Jeff Schewe and Bruce Fraser and Highlight Recovery in Adobe Camera Raw by Jeff Schewe all listed on and accessible from this page http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/ps_pro_primers.html So I didn't buy the magazine ... But the main reason I'm going into detail about the whereabouts of these tutorials is Albano's question about online versions of the information. I think he may find these resources useful, and IMO he won't really be missing anything by not having access to the magazine article. Quoting Shel Belinkoff [EMAIL PROTECTED]: I saw the article yesterday and just briefly looked at it. Now you've made me want to take time to give it a good read. Jeff, BTW, is a consultant for Adobe's Photoshop and, iirc, has done some development work for them. Shel [Original Message] From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] This month's issue of Photoshop User magazine has a fabulous article about the PSCS Camera Raw converter. It's written by PSCS expert and Real World Camera Raw author Bruce Fraser along with Jeff Schewe, a top Chicago shooter. Interesting. I must look for a copy -- see if this adds anything new to the material those two have published as Adobe White Papers (on the Adobe site). ERNR
RE: Great Camera Raw Article in Photoshop User
The article is a nice condensation of some of the main points found in other places, and it includes some good demos. From what I recall of the Adobe white papers, it goes well beyond the information found there. The most important and complete Camera Raw resource is probably Bruce Fraser's book. I think some of those papers you mention weren't there last time I checked the adobe materials. I don't remember reading anything on the web site that really explained how the four key elements of the adjustment panel -- brightness, contrast, exposure, and shadows -- interrelate. I'll go back for another look. Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]: The article is a nice condensation of some of the main points found in other places, and it includes some good demos. RE: Great Camera Raw Article in Photoshop User
I reread all of those adobe docs. There's some very good information in them. A Color Managed Raw Workflow provides a good plan for setting up a printing output workflow. Highlight Recovery in Adobe Camera Raw illustrates an interesting technique for combining two different Raw conversions to deal with extreme circumstances, and Digital Workflow for Raw Processing provides a nice overview of the Raw Conversion process. But none of them provide a clear example of how to work with the various Raw Converter adjustments to optimize a given file. The article does exactly that. The inter-relationship of shadow, contrast, brightness and exposure is clearly illustrated in the magazine piece. It's also nicely explained in Bruce's book. But it's not covered in depth in the Adobe papers. Paul I think some of those papers you mention weren't there last time I checked the adobe materials. It uses examples actually shot by Schewe and explains some of the conversion decisions. It explains how the conversion sliders relate to a 5-point curve and why doing this during conversion is superior to working the curves in PhotoShop. I also learned that the Camera Raw converter has an extended highlight recovery logic that can actually bring back lost highlights. The article also gets into setting up your defaults, batch processing and much more. A great read.

If I buy the magazine and get the article, I'll make a copy for you. I most often read such things at a nearby comfy book store that has a coffee bar and big, over stuffed chairs.
