Re: PESO: Little ANZAC

2005-11-03 Thread Boris Liberman

Hi!

Thank you for your well considered comments Boris.

You know, I went back & had a look at the shots taken from that day,
and the very next frame was this same young man looking straight at
me, with that same bored look, which covers almost all the points you
raised.

http://tinyurl.com/daxag

I just preferred the one where he hadn't noticed me yet. I also like
that little face in the background, but to be honest I didn't notice
him looking at me at the time :-)

Dave, that's the great challenge of photography, I think... You got the
motif right on the first shot and some probably less important technical
issues on this one... What ideally should've been done is to combine
both in one shot... I know I suffer from the same problem myself ;-).

Thanks for sharing...

Boris

i like the first one. in that one, he just looks bored. in this one,
he looks uncomfortable, and one might wonder if that apparent
discomfort is because he noticed the camera, rather than mere boredom
from being in this parade. this ambiguity dilutes what i see as the
main story of the photo.

Thanks for your comments Bruce.

I was trying to include the flags in the background & I had to
sacrifice his feet. Probably if I had been standing I could have "shot
down" at the kids to include both the background flags and feet, but I
shot most of this parade as close to the ground as possible.

Hi,

based on what's here, a little off the top might be helpful. Otherwise
it's a good photo - there's a strong sense of the foremost boy's discomfort
or ennui, and a good representation of the small group as well. There are
any number of nits one could pick, but it's not a bad shot at all.

Not bad for a non-people shooter. The biggest thing for me would have
been to shifted the composition to include his feet and less of the
sky. At this point, all you could do is crop some of the sky.

I agree with what Frank's said. It is this sense of being forced that
can clearly be read on the boy's face... I think I would probably crop
off somewhat on the left because half-person there is distracting... I
don't mind half-person OOF, but the one on the left is too sharp ;-).

Then there is a question of the boy on the background on the LHS,
which looked at you when you took the picture. It probably means that
you might have stepped a bit to the right so as to exclude the
half-boy on the left and give more prominence to the boy on the back..
This would add a bit of conflict between these two boys.

I would also consider cropping some off the bottom... I generally
dislike limbs that are neither fully in the frame nor fully out of
it... But then again, I have this peculiar tendency to crop to
square...

And of course cropping is just another way of seeing which makes my
comments somewhat irrelevant...

As usual, Shel's advise comes to mind - make as many takes as possible
while on location. Edit later - digital film does not cost money ;-).

I should say - this is interesting picture to analyze...

Well done!

Good call Frank. It is a very bored look. I guess he is just to young

Thanks for looking Paul,

I see what you mean & I though of doing it, but I would have lost the
flags in the background which I wanted to keep.
