Thanks, Dan.

The lake is Winnisquam, whose northernmost 2 miles or so are a 10mph/no wake

Thanks Eric (and others).

Actually, the first one (and all of the ones in my first 5 minutes or so of
shooting) was underexposed and adjusted in LR later. I had had exposure
compensation set to -1.3 for some shots of the sunset the evening before. I saw
the loon, came in to get my camera, mount the extender and lens, set mode to
AV, checked the ISO. Got the tripod, went out on the dock, saw that I was
getting decent shutter speeds with that ISO, started shooting. Once I realized
he would be there a while, I took a deep breath and re-checked including a look
at the histograms to verify that the exposure was about right. Oops! Zeroed the
compensation and went on with the shooting. I considered upping the ISO at that
point to get back to a higher speed but decided not to do that. A total of
about 120 shots over a 15 minute time span around 6:00pm. Fifteen or so keepers
in the set.

2013-07-17 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Charles Robinson charl...@visi.com:

I spent a few days up North on Lake Vermilion this past weekend.
Near our cabin (really a house) was a loon who pretty much hung
out near our dock - much more social than your common hermit-like
bird. I only had to sit on the dock for 5 minutes before he did
this for me:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2013/summer_lake_vermilion/content/K5__3991_large.html

So that's what a loon looks like. Great shot but I think I prefer the
previous one in the gallery - shows the plumage to great effect.

I've never gotten that close to a Loon that I could fill the frame with
a reasonable focal length lens, even in a Kayak, I've heard them call,
and seen them a long distance away.

Like I said, this guy was pretty social (for a loon)! When we circled into the
dock to land, we actually went right around him in the water and he just
watched us. Apparently sometimes he'll just come right up to the dock while
they are sitting there. Cool!

Love the loon pic (and the one preceeding it in your gallery).  There's usually
a nesting pair of loons near the cottage we rent in New Hampshire; you're
really lucky to have such a tame one.

I rise in defense of the 50-200.  The corners are soft wide-open.  But, it's
-very- light in weight, otherwise sharp, and easily portable.  It goes with me
when I hike or take long walks, and the 80-320 did not.  One more reason I
rather like APS-C.
