Larry,
First of all, 20/1.8 with x1.4 will be close to f/2.5 if I am doing the
math right at this ungodly early hour.

SEcond, while I don't have experience with Tamrox TCs,
I have been happily using Pentax's MF 2x-S and AF x1.7.

I just wanted to remind that the TCs can also be used with a macro
lens, making it super-macro.

Here is what DAF 100-MACRO with 2x-s and AF-1.7 stacked together
can do with a raspberry:

Another cool realization I had was that my Sigma 20/1.8 will work just
fine on a K1000 body that I've got lying around, and it'll give me a
view that is wider, and faster, than my 16-50 on the digital body.
Albeit, that ASA 400 film doesn't seem to be nearly as good as ASA 400
 on the sensor.

In any case, it should be fun to play with.

It's kind of silly to put a 1.4x on a 20 rather than just using my 30, or just
using the 20 on my aps-c. The 1.4x would be for my longer lenses, though it
could be handy for putting on my 16-50 when I'm shooting at the dojo and
really need a 24-70.

Sure. The DOF became extremely shallow.
(Also, the small tripod I was using may not be as steady for
this sort of job.)
It was more of an interesting exercise - to put together two TCs
with a macro lens.

I have no experience with AF teleconverters, but have the MF Adaptall
2 version of both the 2x and 1.4x that I planned to use with my 52B
90mm f2.5 Macro SP. It will do 1:2 by itself and 1:1 with the 2x, so I
believe that means it will do 1:1.5 with the 1.4x.

The main advantage of the 1.4x (to me) is that you are losing only a
stop of light instead of 2 stops with a 2x. Nice to have when that is
a factor.

The Sigma EX 10-20mm f4-5.6 will also cover a full 35mm frame, at
least down to about 13mm. That probably makes it about the widest
rectilinear you can put on a film camera.

Need to carve out some time to actually USE all the stuff I've been
accumulating. Your 1.4x to 2x image degradation comparison would be
interesting to do.

The Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 remains the widest FF rectilinear in most
mounts (the other option being the Voigtlander Ultra-Wide-Heliar 12mm
f5.6 in LTM, M or F mount). There's also their new 8-16mm version for
APS-C but I doubt that covers FF at any focal length.

Best deal on a real ultra-wide for FF is the Samyang 14mm f2.8, it's
got a bunch of barrel distortion but is extremely sharp (and the
distortion is easily corrected in post). It's available in KA form and
branded as a Rokinon, Bower, Opteka, Falcon, Samyang and IIRC Vivitar
Series 1.

In response to your original question, Larry, that Tamron 1.4x TC is
one of the best around, optically speaking. As far as AF goes, there
are two versions, one of which works well with SDM and one which
doesn't. The one that does is the MC4 version, which should be
printed on the TC body. Because these are no longer manufactured, they
go for a pretty penny, and I've seen them sell for $350 or more on
eBay.

And yet that doesn't seem to be enough of a sign for Pentax to
introduce their own 1.4x TC...

Any Sigma lens that's DG (not DC) and has an aperture ring will work
on manual focus Pentax film cameras. I've used my FA 20mm f/2.8 on an
ME Super with good results; I wonder how my Sigma 24mm f/1.8 would
work out in low light with 1600 ASA film... I'd need a 16mm f/1.8 on
my K10D to match that.

Are Pentax making any 16mm f/1.8 primes yet? :-)

2010-08-29 Thread John Sessoms

I have a 1.4x Pz-AF MC4 Tamron-F TELE-CONVERTER.

I'm not impressed with it as much as I am with the Tamron AF ASPHERICAL
LD 28-200 1:3.8-5.6 lens I bought it for. And I'm pretty sure I've
mentioned before how disappointing I found that lens.

The lens is not sharp and has a lot of CA. The lens + TC is noticeably
less sharp and has a lot more CA.

Maybe I just got stuck with bad examples, but I wouldn't recommend
either one. If you got the TC for free, you didn't pay too much, but
otherwise ...

The Sigma EX 10-20 1:4-5.6 I have is a DC lens for digital. On my PZ-1p,
it vignettes noticeably at 20mm and at 10mm it's like shooting through a
porthole.
