Re: PESO: Orchid

2017-02-22 Thread P. J. Alling
Hum, interesting. I'm no expert on orchids, and don't know how much
variety is allowed among varieties. But based on shapes your first
example is closer to mine, and based on color the second is. There's
enough difference between all three to be three different varieties, or
they could just be slightly different expressions of the same one. If
I'd actually taken notes when I took that photo it might help, but I was
just making pictures of the pretty flowers.

Re: PESO: Orchid

2017-02-22 Thread P. J. Alling

I think the entire internet is becoming more cumbersome.

Dropbox removed the feature that allowed display of simple HTML,
actually they added extra code to their server to stop display of simple
HTML,

But it's still possible if you use an APP to display HTML, but it's no
longer quite so simple to share links to that page. All for security,
and control, their control.

I can see the security angle, but they didn't disable photo sharing, now
you have to display them the way they want you to, not the way you want to.

If you keep the flowers at the same size in the frame, the longer lens will
give you a bigger working distance, and less FOV of the background (which
might help in case you have a distracting backgroung), however not less DOF,
which I assume is what you were referring too.

Nice colours. Real interesting OOF stuff in the background. I like

All in all, I really like it. Oops! I think I just heard one ask the

http://davidavid.whatsbeef.net/caladenia2.jpg is the one I posted,

I took that latter photo a week or so ago, but wasn't happy with the
result. You can see it's been fiddled with a bit - I tried to bring out
the background (it was the old problem of photographing flowers that are
just so much brighter than their surroundings). So I uploaded that pic
to show to a mate of mine, saying I wasn't satisfied with it. I
convinced myself I should go back and reshoot, to try out the trick of
doing two exposures - one for the flowers, one for the background. So I
went back there and shot the same two flowers. The result, for some
reason, was that they were all underexposed - the ones that were
supposed to have the background nice were just good for the flowers. But
luckily while I was there I shot some stuff at high magnification with a
50mm or 28mm and combinations of a reversing ring and extension tubes.
The one I posted was with the 50mm reversed in front of something like
30mm of extension.
So now I absolutely have to go back again and try and get something on
the same theme of the first one (-:
I'm glad you liked the positioning of the flowers and the DOF - it's
something that I actually put some thought into (-:

Nice shot David- if I could get in any closer though, I'd go for the tip
with the 'prongs' and the curled 'leaf' bit.
Could be interesting - next time I'll take the bellows (-:
I love the little yellow tip.
Just trying my luck, I removed
'2' from the image name; that one was pretty good too. I try to
reinterpret
it though, removed a speck from a petal and shifted the black point

 What do you think?

Hr I see the effect you're after - it's exactly the one I've
been trying to avoid recently (black background). In this case, I think
it could work, the subjects being so bright and the whole contrast
thing. In fact, for caladenia2.jpg, I actually did a similar thing -
shifted the black point to kill the background to black.

Stay tuned, I may be able to drag myself off my sick bed in a day or two (-:
