Seriously, one would have to want to crash one of these if it was going

It seems if you want realtime (about 2-3 frames delay as claimed

The delay seems to be about as long as the delay on my Fuji X-T1
viewfinder (in other words, no appreciable delay). The machine can be
flown by using the camera output to the screen, which is especially
useful for dialing in composition.
There is quite a pause when taking a still picture as the entire system
shuts down while the image is being written, so nothing is visible for
several seconds. I presume the camera doesn't actually have a buffer.

Yep - using the wifi bacpac (I have a Hero 2) I get a 3 second delay -
or lag - from the camera to the iPhone app display. If I hard wire a
monitor to the camera there is no lag at all. The problem is that 99.9%
of the time I cannot link the camera to a display and so I live with the
lag. That said, I only view the iPhone app display of the camera's
output while setting up the framing for the shot before locking off the
camera mount prior to filming. The most usual situation for this would
be mounting inside a car to get a shot of the front seat occupant(s).

Thanks anyway.

Very cool. I did think about investing into this sort of thing but to do
it professionally in the UK involves some cost in terms of time and
admin, not to mention the quali needed to clear our air authority's
demands. I have a freelance colleague who has done it and he does enjoy
it but I decided against for various reasons. I'm only doing another 3
or 4 years before I pack it all in, and I've invested into satellite ops
for newsgathering so am gonna stick with that.

Is that a 2 or a 3 gimballed mount? I'm considering a 3 gimbal for my

Looks great though and please do post some shots - moving and still?

Bill,

What is it?

It looks like DJI Phantom 2 in something like this configuration:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1044729-REG/dji_phantom_2_vision_plus.html

But it has those safety (?) arches under the propellers.
So, I am confused if it is just an add-on, or I mixed it up, and it is a
completely different quadcopter?

Please, report back on your experience after the first week or two, I am
curious 1) how you settled on this model and

2) what's your first week's experience (regrets, etc.)

It practically flies itself. It has both a compass and GPS built into
it, so it always knows where it is and what it's direction of travel is.
It will even fly back to it's launch point and land by itself if it
loses contact with the control station.

I think it was some sort of Panasonic actually. I didn't take the

You got it in one Igor.

I put the the prop guards on to protect the machine if I bump into
something with it.

Please, report back on your experience after the first week or two, I am

The DJI's are pretty much the most user friendly machines out there
right now. Very simple to fly and they have all sorts of fail safes on
them to keep the pilot out of trouble. The Vision 2 plus is a sideways
version of the Vision 2, in that it comes with the camera built in
rather than having to add it to the machine (which would be a Gopro
Black right now). I did a lot of checking around and the concesus was
that the DJI camera and the Gopro are of very similar imaging quality,
but by the time I got the Vision 2 outfitted I would have spent several
hundred dollars more than I did.
The machine I bought uses a smart phone as the camera controller rather
than having to buy a dedicated screen for first person view (seeing what
the camera sees in real time).

From what I read, the Vision 2 Plus is the lowest cost machine capable
of giving professional results. The camera is 14mp/ 1080px60fps video,
and seems to do good video. It's mounted to a three axis gimbal, so the
machine can be pitching around quite a bit and maintain smooth video.

and

2) what's your first week's experience (regrets, etc.)

I've only done a few flights so far, I won't bore anyone with the videos
(well, unless asked), but so far, I'm very happy with it. The only
frustration with it, and I fully understand why DJI has done what they
did with the software is that it doesn't fly very far when close to an
airport. I live about 3lm from our local aerodrome, and in the school
ground a couple of blocks from where I live, I can fly to a fifty foot
altitude and 50 feet from the launch point. It's like it runs into a
wall when it hits the limit.
Having read a few very scary stories of quad copters being used badly,
I'm not unhappy with the compromise, I do feel it is a bit more limiting
than it needs to be though..

It's a three axis and maintains the camera very steadily.
