More recent laptops have USB3. I think even the refurbished HP laptop I bought a 
year or so ago has them (don't have time to verify that right now, but I think 
it's true).

Ditto but I cope.  It's also 32 bit and RAM limited which pretty much eliminates
any possibility of using most modern photo editing programs. The thing is, it's
still going OK so I'm reluctant to update until absolutely necessary (that and
the fact that I have other priorities for spending at present).

Sadly my Acer Travelmate 5744 Laptop has no PCI Express port so an 
upgrade to USB3 is impossible. I realize I need a new laptop but that's 
an expensive business in SA today.

deal where SD cards were being packaged with little USB card readers. 
I've been using them ever since, and, of course, getting longer and 
longer transfer times when moving image files to my computer.

I finally decided enough was enough and bought myself a USB 3 card reader.

The new reader is something like 6 times faster.
