Re: Worldcon 76

Which begs the question;  How many SQL geeks are there?

Which also brings to mind the drinking establishment on East Street in
New Haven, CT that was called the R Bar.  Nobody got that joke...

I was pleasantly surprised by how many people understood the joke on
my badge, which referenced this comic:

At the end of the con they were selling off stuff that they no longer
needed and I picked up a Pixma iX6820 printer for $65. I figure that
it will be handy for when I want to print something that would be
problematic at Costco. I also have a friend that would like some of my
photographs on postcards.

I know pretty much nothing about printing things myself, so would
appreciate suggestions for ink, paper, and blank postcards.

Re: Worldcon 76 (oops, more)

2018-08-20 Thread Larry Colen
Oops, I forgot a couple of details. I had been wandering around showing
off a metal print of this photo, which I considered worth showing off:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/42922334624

and someone bought it from me. It does work well in metal, and was
meant as a test print, rather than a final product, so that was cool.
She offered me $100 and it cost me $60 to print, so while it isn't a
great markup percentage, I'm thrilled that my test print paid for
itself. I had a few other people ask about buying it as well.

It seems that metal is a good medium for selling, because it doesn't
require expensive hanging and framing, and photos that work well in
metal are the bright eye catching ones that tend to appeal to the masses.

One of the major photographers in the local fandom community did a
presentation on one of his projects, a series of portraits of authors
and others in the field on a 4x5 camera. I can certainly understand the
appeal of using that camera, but it really does not seem to be the
optimal tool for the job of portraiture, particularly in situations of
limited time, particularly at $5/frame.
