Some questions make the price go down, too.
I've seen it happen.

Ebay wants the price to go up. You don't have a prayer. I am just
getting out of the ebay habit after I sell a gazillion of small items
left (filters, an Olympus AD2 and other bits and bobs).

eBays new Questions from other buyers thingy.

2004-12-08 Thread Don Sanderson
So, a guy has a Takumar lens for sale on eekBay.
I ask him whether it's Auto, Super or SMC.
He responds SMC, great.
But now ALL the buyers can see this on the auction page.
The price'll go way up.
Don doesn't get his super, devious, informed, clever, good deal.
Poor, poor me. :-(
Has anyone discovered a super, devious, informed, clever way
around this?
I'm not sure I like the idea of an informed person raising the
price for sellers just by asking the right questions.

Perhaps instead, I should have asked for a better pic of the
front of the lens? (Doh!)

Just be thankful that the answer to your question isn't reflected in
the search results for 'smc takumar'

Or is it?

Yes, the downside is that other bidders may get key information
that only you had in the past. BUT, there is also a great upside
to this. If the seller gives you false answers, they are in the
listing and gives you much better grounds to get a refund if
you end up getting something less than what you bid on due to his
false claims! The seller certainly cant deny he made them when
they are right there in the listing and unalterable...

Here's a response I got from a fella named Jim:

quote
i) Level a complaint to eBay directly and send one to their suggestion box,
as
others have.

ii) Your questions cannot be edited by the seller so I go with something
like
If it's alright, I'd prefer my questions not be posted. Thanks.
Make sure its the very first sentence.

It's awkward, but I've had pretty good luck with it.
end quote

Very good ideas IMHO.
Jim hasn't posted to the list yet, can't blame him the
way some of us COF's growl sometimes.

Everybody altogether now:
HEY JIM, it's OK we don't REALLY bite!
(Probably would but it's just a mailing list!) ;-)

Keep in mind that, with many items, more accurate information would tend
to keep the price *down*. I've bought a few things that would have been
cheaper had this kind of question been answered :(

I sure don't like this either. I wonder what would happen if one used a
category for the question that might not trigger posting of the query. I
would try:

Question about combined shipping for multiple items.
Then ask your question about SMC or whatever.

The posting of the Q A is solely up to the
seller. This is not that good because anytime
the seller has a less than desireable answer
he can choose the Q A to be kept private.
