That's the same operation.

 The Metadata editing panel
for each file, however, should show the lens name.

Well, the probalem may be that the RAW files on the system are
the converted DNG files (from the original PEF), perhaps the
DNG converter did not carry on that info into the DNG ...

In any case, the Metadata panel for the 'unknown lens' ones
does not show a lens name at all, so I guess the info is just not
 there.

What version of DNG Converter are you using? I think it was versions
prior to DNG Converter v3.2 that would 'hide' certain makernotes/
private data, all later versions should have it embedded in the file.
If you reprocess older DNGs with the latest DNG Converter (v4.3), it
should restore the data unless it was simply elided.

The DA* lenses are so new that none of them were converted to DNG
with anything other than the latest conversion.

I was converting all files to DNG with DNG Converter until Lightroom
came out; I reprocessed all at some point. Now I convert all files to
DNG on the fly using Lightroom's convert file to DNG and copy to a
new format Import setting. All the lens names are interpreted
correctly now.

How much would you be willing to pay to sign up for a one-day
 session? or a two-day?

Godfrey, Over the years I've attended numerous one two day photo
seminars. Everything from basic photo instruction, to specialized
photoshop instruction. I recall paying as little as $75, years ago, for 2
day sessions from nationally known photogs (Lepp, Shaw, Wolfe,Planck etc).
I just received a flyer from John Shaw, announcing a full weekend session
(Nature Digital weekend seminar)) for $225 a one day rate of $160.

For me @ this point it would have to be a very special session, taught by a
nationally know persoanlity for me to spend that amount of money.

At a local community college type setting, I probably wouldn't pay more than
$60 - 75, depending on the specific subject being taught.

I have no interest in Lightroom, so I probably wouldn't attend any session
on it unless it was very, very cheap.

You might have to manually synchronize the metadata between
Lightroom's database catalog and the files:

  - In the metadata browser panel on the left, click on your Pentax
cameras and then Command- or Control- click on the Unknown item in
the lens category. That should select everything not already properly
digested into the library that was taken with a Pentax body.

  - Then select all and use the Metadata-Save Metadata to file

  - Once that completes, use Metadata - Read Metadata from files ...
For DNG files, use the Metadata - Update DNG Metadata Preview

interpret it correctly in the database.

I had to close the database and re-open it for the metadata browser
to properly reflect all the new entries. With Lightroom v1.3, all the
Pentax lenses shipped so far are properly listed in the metadata
browser now, as far as I'm aware.

I've been using LR for several months, and still feel
as though I've only scratched the surface, and am
doing some things the hard way. I would gladly pay
$100-200 for a two-day workshop; I don't think you
could cover everything here in one day. Ideally,
there would be facilities for hands-on rather than
just lectures and demos; if just lectures demos it
probably would fit in one day, but be much less
effective.

I don't think I'm interested in flying to SFO and
staying 3 nights for it, though. Offer it in NY, and
I may well be there.

2007-11-27 Thread Stan Halpin
I added a couple of topic suggestions to your list below.
Reasonable price? I think the going rate for professional trainers is
from is $795/day to $1495/day. I've been to enough one-day sessions
produced/managed by professional trainers to be very leery of
paying that much out of my own pocket - I anticipate short days with
little content, no depth to the discussion, too many breaks with low
quality coffee and stale doughnuts. (I am not talking about
photography content here - these were related to my work), Given that
cynical appraisal of Workshops in general, if I had faith in the
competence of the presenter (and with you I would) then I'd probably
pay $200-250 for a shorter, intro, first day and at the end of the
day would pay $400 for the full-day second day. I know, you didn't
say that this is the model you would follow, but for marketing I
think you would do well to have an Intro day and a second, Advanced
Techniques, day.

more Lightroom 1.3 improvement ...

2007-11-26 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Just noticed that LR v1.3 now properly interprets the DA* series lens
names in the metadata, whether PEF or DNG. Another minor issue fixed.

Yes, I noticed that too after importing the images from a Toronto trip
last week, where I used the 16-50 and 50-135 exclusively.
(about 2/3 with the 16-50)

Have not looked back yet to see if all the DA limiteds and other
relatively new lenses are now displayed correctly too.
(they used to end up in the 'other lenses' bin :-)

You might have to manually synchronize the metadata between
Lightroom's database catalog and the files:

- In the metadata browser panel on the left, click on your Pentax
cameras and then Command- or Control- click on the Unknown item in
the lens category. That should select everything not already properly
digested into the library that was taken with a Pentax body.

- Then select all and use the Metadata-Save Metadata to file
command to ensure that all edits are written to all selected files.

- Once that completes, use Metadata - Read Metadata from files ...
For DNG files, use the Metadata - Update DNG Metadata Preview
command. That will let Lightroom re-import all the lens metadata and
interpret it correctly in the database.

I had to close the database and re-open it for the metadata browser
to properly reflect all the new entries. With Lightroom v1.3, all the
Pentax lenses shipped so far are properly listed in the metadata
browser now, as far as I'm aware.
