2010-11-24 Thread Jeffery Smith
Robert White (England) used to sell Voigtlander stuff below the US prices, and
I bought quite a bit of stuff from him for a few years. I know that shipping
to/from US/AUS can be prohibitive, are there also VAT issues? I once thought
of buying an Epiphone guitar from Australia (a discontinued model), but the
shipping via air was prohibitive. And you can forget getting a bicycle shipped
from AUS to US.

I don't have any experience with any of those lenses, but you really
seem to have three different classes of lens based on AOV. A Wide to
Normal, a wider to telephoto and two ultra wides. Right now I only have
the equivalent of the Wide to Normal, (Pentax FA 20-35mm), most times I
don't find I need anything wider. You might want to look at it as an
alternative to the Sigma 20-40. The Pentax is a stop slower but it's
sharp with great contrast and very high resolution. The only problem is
that it's no longer available new, though that usually means you can
pick one up for about $300 US. KEH actually has one in stock now,
though shipping to Australia might be problematic.

The 16-50 would be my first choice unless you really, really need to
go wider. The SDM focusing, weather sealing and excellent build
quality are important considerations. Optically, it's as good as all
but the most expensive primes. It's probably my most-used lens.

Of the other three, the only one I've used is the Pentax 12-24. It's a
very good lens. Obviously a stop slower than the 16-50 and lacks the
weather sealing. I bought the Pentax 12-24 after considering the Sigma
10-20 f/4.0-5.6. In the end, I couldn't accept the weird distortion of
the Sigma. You list the newer Sigma 10-20/3.5 which may be better
(ought to be, given the price) but I've never tried one.

I wouldn't have any worries about the build quality of the EX series
Sigmas, though: I've owned two (and still have one) and they're as
good or better built than the DA* Pentax zooms. Really solid.

With the k5, the 12-24 won't be too slow, because you'll be gaining a minimum
of two stops of upward ISO latitude over the K-7. That said, Adam has a very

Of course! The WR sealing! I hadn't even thought of that, and I have been
doing a lot of beach stuff lately where I say to myself "my camera is
sealed, my FA lens is not"...

That should be one of my major considerations actually, so pretty much
discounts anything Sigma.

Maybe I should just suck it up and handle the slowness of the 12-24mm...
hm, decisions, decisions.

Paul, I've cheaper Sigma 24-60/2.8 EX lens and it's build quality is second
to none. I've held and shot with DA* 16-50/2.8 and Sigma is built just as
good. The only thing Sigma lacks is WR sealing, but that's known in advance.
If other Sigma EX lenses are built like 24-60/2.8, I see no reason to worry.

The QC and sample variation are an issue, but it seems that no manufacturer
is immune to this particular detriment.

Tan is.

The interesting thing about prices down under is that, although the $A
has been approaching or at parity with the $US in recent months, lens
prices have remained high in comparison with those in the US. It's a
much smaller market, of course. The prices Tan quoted are about right
for one of the more reputable on-line sellers here. They would probably

Re: wide angle zoom comparison...

2010-11-23 Thread Darren Addy
If you are looking for something wider than the kit lens (18mm) then I
don't know how a 16mm even qualifies. I have the Sigma 10-20mm
f4.5-5.6 and love it.

Shots with the 10-20mm (both models): http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigma10-20/
A few more here:
http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/84539-sigma-10-20mm-club.html

Discussion about deciding between the two models:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigma10-20/discuss/72157625417016048/

I think it is interesting that owner reviews of the f4-5.6 are 4-1/2
stars (Amazon) while the f3.5 version are only 4 stars. Maximum
aperture isn't everything (by a long shot). Another lens to consider
might be the Tamron SP 10-24mm.

That's really not an either or choice there. Those are complementary
lenses. The difference in AOV between the minimum focal lengths will be
huge. 109.5° at 10mm vs 83° at 16mm (measured diagonally but you get
the idea). So the answer is you should get them both. Now, isn't that
easier?

I do know also that the 16-50, isn't too much different from the 18-55 kit
lens that I currently have, but you know I NEVER use it unless it is for an
interior or a funky looking fashion shot and it is almost ALMOST used at
18mm. I'd love something a little wider, but not to the point of being fish
eye, which is why I included the 16-50. I don't EVER use zooms anymore
unless I really have to. I shoot almost exclusively these days with my
FA50mm 1.7 or my FA100m f2.8 macro and very occasionally with the 18-55mm or
I also have a 28-70mm/f2.8 Tokina that is getting on now but is a huge,
heavy lens and gives fine results and used to be my main lens in my wedding
photography days...

Anyways, I think I pretty much have it narrowed down to either the:

2. PENTAX-DA* 16-50mm f/2.8 ED AL[IF]SDM - about $1400
Or
4. Sigma Lens 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM - about $927

I just think that the 12-24mm is just that bit too slow.

Interested to hear any further thoughts?

The 16-50 is about $750 in the US. You are down under?

Thanks for all of the feedback guys. Yep, I know that the AOV is quite

I've tried both versions of the Sigma (the older f4-5.6 version which
I owned in Nikon mount and the new f3.5 version which will probably be
the only APS-C lens to be added to my current Sony/Minolta kit), the
Tokina and the Pentax version of the 12-24 (same optics). The build
quality on the Pentax is no better than the Sigma, although it does
feel better at first glance (the Sigma EX lenses are very well built
but feel kinda plasticky when new. It's due to a rubberized coating on
the barrel). The optics in both the Pentax and Tokina 12-24's were
inferior to the older Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6, mostly at the edge at wide
apertures. The current 10-20 f3.5 (which is optically better than the
older f4-5.6 version) is simply the best UW zoom for APS-C cameras on
the market after the Tokina 11-16 (which isn't available in K mount)

Frankly, I wouldn't consider the Pentax unless there was a cost
savings for it over the Sigma, it's certainly not worth any premium.
It's a good lens but not worth more than half of what it costs new
outside the US, pricing is MUCH better at B&H, it's a $50 difference
rather than a 50% difference like it is here in Canada.

The 20-40 isn't wide at all, I'd skip it (it's intended for a
Full-frame camera) and the 16-50's a general purpose zoom.

This is one case where I'd unabashedly recommend the Sigma. The 10-20
f3.5 is simply a better lens than Pentax's good but not exceptional
12-24 and the Sigma's cheaper as well. The only lens in this range
I'd consider over the Sigma is Tokina's incredible 11-16 f2.8 but it's
not available in Pentax mount.

Don't get me wrong, the 12-24's a good lens (as is the Tokina 12-24
where the design originates) but the Sigma is definitely better. It's
wider, faster, sharper and has better AF.

Re: wide angle zoom comparison...

2010-11-23 Thread Stan Halpin
Go for the 12-24. 'Tis a very nice lens, as is the 16-50. The advantage is that
the 12-24 will supplement your present kit; you'll still have the 18-55 for
when you need a bit longer. Later when you sell another catalog or two you can
upgrade the 18-55 to a 16-50. If you get the 16-50 now, you've increased
quality but you haven't expanded your options.

How wide do you need? The 12-24 is clearly the nicest wide zoom here. I'm
looking for a zoom as well, but I just want a walking around lens. In all
seriousness, you are a pro and need to cover all focal lengths with fairly
good glass.
