I would like to know if others with this lens have had similar results. I actually have the K 100/4 macro (same optics though), and can second your comments at the subjective level. Landscapes shot with this lens don't seem to have the razor sharpness, contrast and brilliance that I get with my K 24/2.8, K 35/3.5, A 50/1.4 or A* 200/4 ED macro. I am currently seeking a better short telephoto lens for that reason. At this point my plan is to spend my free weekend (11-13) in Sevenoaks, the locale of the meeting to which I am traveling. Suggestions? Cotty had mentioned a possible trip well north; I am not sure I am up for that much travel. I'm free that weekend. How about a meet up in town? Bob W, you up for that? Rob? Anyone? Not that I'm going to buy anything that is (or isn't) announced and I'm certainly not jumping ship based on this show but I am anxious to hear what's up and put an END to the rumor mill for a while at least. Hi Jonathon, The 100 f/4 is optimised for macro work. However, the A 100 and F 100 macros are faster and perform better for landscape work. If macro performance is not required, any of the 100/105s will do. If, and I say IF you can find a 105 f2.5 K, get it! It is one of the finest. An option would be the screw mount 105 SMCT or Super Takumar. It is the same lens in a screw mount. With a K/m42 adaptor and stop down metering, it will deliver the same performance. I remember several years ago that someone on this list (at that time) had picked up an old maybe large-format projector that they then modified to take mounted 67 slides. I recall them saying that they projected the slide across the street onto their neighbor's garage door. - What is your preferred film for the 67? I've done the same for head shots with my 67 165.4 and the #1 tube. (I can get head and shoulders without a tube.) That's why I asked I certainly wouldn't want anything sharper. I like all of the films that I've used in 35mm. However, since grain isn't a problem, I use a lot more Portra 400 VC in the 6x7. I also use a lot of Delta 3200. Again, grain is not a huge concern. Other favorites include Plux-X, T-Max 400, and Ektachrome 100 -- in both VS and S stocks. I never project 6x7 transparencies. I generally scan them and make prints. Don't miss the Cliff of Moher and the Dingle Peninsula. I thought that the highly-touted Ring of Kerry was a disappointment, but it should be better in Nov, when it won't be very crowded. We especially enjoyed, Newgrange, and hour north of Dublin, which is a passage tomb probably older than Stonehenge. Trinity College and Killmainam Gaol are very interesting in Dublin. Two cities that are very under-rated are Cobh (Cove), near Cork, with a beautiful harbor area and the emmigration museum, and Tralee, which has the national folk dance center and good traditional pubs. I found the pubs in Dublin to be mostly smoky rock bars. Try to stay in small BBs, especially in the country. The folks who run these places are usually great. Shannon Airport is almost in the centre of Ireland so affords a pretty easy drive to either the West Coast (Galway) or the East Coast (Dublin). You may have to prepare the car rental crowd if you wish to rent a vehicle with automatic transmission as the cars are very predominantly manual in Ireland. The drivers are courteous but a little maniac (very high road toll per capita) also of course it's all right hand drive there. Some of the roads along the peninsulas down south gets pretty tight so don't go for a huge car either. Doing a loop from Galway to Dublin via the south coast would be a very scenic trip but a bit rushed for six days, accommodation won't be a problem but do get yourself a road atlas since only the fairly limited express ways are well sign posted. I expect that you'll have a great time, let me know if you have any questions but remember that there are plenty of great web sites brimming with information. Don't miss the Cliff of Moher and the Dingle Peninsula. Dan is right; Dingle and the Cliffs are must-sees. Try to spend a couple of nights in Dingle and explore the peninsula. The Burren, with its lunar, desolate landscape, is also worth seeing, and is the home of a couple of churches with famous, photogenic Celtic crosses. Then again, it is hard to take a bad photo in Ireland. :) When I was last in Ireland, we flew in and out of Shannon and stayed to the Southwest coast. I did a quick inventory this afternoon and found that I have a much larger stock of 120 and 220 film than of 135. So I am seriously considering a simple kit of one 645 body plus only 3 lenses: 45m, 75mm, and 150mm. The 35mm and the 120mm are crying out to me that they want to go along also, but I think I will resist. Though I may swap out the 45mm for the 35mm . . . One extension tube for macro work. Maybe even leave the tripod behind. This is hardly off topic... Just between the two of us, because I have one that I'm thinking of selling, the lens kind of sucks. It just isn't particularly sharp across the whole aperture range. When I found out that I liked a 24mm I got a Pentax A series one: great lens. Still have it along with about a half dozen other Pentax primes. I've been hunting for off-brand 24mm lenses as I know it'll be hard to find the Pentax one. Thanks, Dave

Using the term pro quickly gets things into a muddle, because of its many connotations. Keep the concept industrial strength/high performance in your mind when thinking about camera equipment. Generally, (I said generally) prime lenses and f2.8 constant aperture zoom lenses are ruggedly built and have high performance are considered pro. Your homework assignment is to find out how many current production lenses Pentax has that meets these criteria. Glad to hear you'll be seeing Ireland, it really is beautiful. To give you an idea of the distances, if you drive quickly, you can get from Downpatrick in the northeast to Limerick in the southwest in seven or eight hours, but you'll be pretty tired. Belfast is only about two hours north of Dublin, and the Coast Road from Belfast to the Giant's Causeway is really worth seeing. While you're near the Causeway, you could pass by the village of Bushmill's and visit the world's oldest distillery, and sample some Bushmill's where it's actually made. Crossing into the North is like driving from one state to another in the US, there aren't any Customs posts (at least there were none when I was there in October 2000). The roads are many parts of Ireland are narrow, so don't be surprised when you wander onto the grass occasionally. You'll find that Irish drivers are pretty daring, but also friendly and courteous. If you like shooting landscapes, you'll love the lighting. Since the weather changes so quickly, those beautiful moments when the sun breaks through the clouds happen frequently, but bring more fast film than you would normally carry, since you may run into a few dull days. Incidentally, if anyone recommends a pub as having great crack, don't run away. It's the Irish word craic, pronounced crack, and means good fun and conversation. Rooms may be chilly in November, so warm PJs might be a good idea. Hope you have a great trip! Pat White

This is one of those Plane tickets, BB vouchers, and rental car trips, but the price was great. Since we're on our own, I though I'd ask for suggestions. We're flying into Shannon. We're currently thinking of making a loop by heading S/SW to see the coast and then doubling back to Dublin. I was there in July, though mostly in the north.
