Hello -

One of the advantages of this type of list and having the person that
designs and writes the software is a part of the list and it provides a
direct line of communication not normally available with software products.
I appreciate the comments about my products and do pay attention to them.

The current suggestions we've been working on were the ability to do a
backup of your data to your location and the need to get an Excel accessible
export. We now have answers for both. Under the utilities section there is
now a one click, all inclusive backup. This is a backup that we can restore
your site from. It is not readily human readable, it is made for our restore
system to read. This is meant for catastrophic situations - someone
mistakenly goes through and deletes a large amount of data for example. We
still backup the whole site each night for our purposes.

For the Excel export we've added a link on the Reports page to an Export
page. There are two options on this page. The first will let you define a
start and end observation date (defaulting to your first and last
observations entered) and then you can download the information in a CSV
file format that can easily be imported into Excel. Once in Excel it can be
sorted, graphed, printed and more.

The second option is a complete download of all of your images - Maps,
Icons, Photos etc. They are in the size and format that they were when you
uploaded them.

To answer the mapping concern - we have incorporated something that we think
will work for many. Under the Map section you can upload a jpeg version of
your floor map. Our aim was to make a system that was easy to use but did
not require additional software. Once the map is upload you can add icons to
the map that represent your traps. Along with a link to the map location
there is a link to the trap details. This allows you to visually look at a
floor map and see the placement of your traps, click on each icon and see
the details of each map. You can delete a trap from a map once it has been
placed. There is also a set of generic icons (you can add your own icons in
addition) that you can place on the maps. This is good for noting various
things such as water leaks, food containers, event notes and more.

One of the enhancements we will be working on to the maps section and to the
observation section is the ability to scroll through dates and visually
observe changes in pest counts. And of course down the road apps are in the
vision.

I am not a fulltime museum professional. But, most fulltime museum
professionals are not programmers. If I did not listen to the practicing
professionals in this field I would end up with the greatest program for
pest control that programmers would want. Therefore I welcome and depend on
your feedback. That way we all win.

Hi there,

I've only recently joined the pestlist and so apologize if this is a repeat
of topics previously covered. We are looking for a good database system for
recording IPM information. We had been using Zak's ZPest software for
Windows and exporting the data into excel. This was a pretty slow process
however and we are now experimenting with an online database by the same
developer at collectionpests.com. This too seems to have it's drawbacks and
I am wondering if anyone uses it and what their thoughts are. I would also
like to know if anyone uses other programs or databases that they could
recommend. We have about 80 sticky traps throughout our museum and check
them every two months, recording each insect that we find. Then we map any
high risk incidents using photoshop. The whole process takes 2-3 days and I
would be grateful for any time saving suggestions you might have.

Thank you,

Hello - we received the email below - the images were in the rar compressed
format. Rar is not native to many computers so I've put his images on a page
on the museumpests web site. If you'd like to help him out please go to
http://museumpests.net/temppests and view the images.

As I usually do, I also suggested that he join our list. Until he does that,
which you won't know unless he sends something to us, please send your
answers to the list (just so others can follow) and to him,

P.S. - I think we had this pest come through a couple weeks ago - must be

Dear Sir/Madam,

Please attached to find a zipped folder including pictures of some insects
we encountered in fur store of our small zoology museum. I wonder if you
have chance to identify those insects? (I think they are two adults, two
larvae and one pupa. One adult may be a black carpet beetle.) (By the way, I
am a cell biologist, not an entomologist).

Thank you for your help in advance.

Best regards.

[pestlist] What a mess - the digest mode. (and I finally typed it correctly)

2011-04-18 Thread Leon Zak
First - Please - DO NOT respond to this on the list, hitting reply sends it
back to everyone on the list, not to just me.

Short version: You're off the digest mode and it is turned off because the
digest mode didn't work like we thought it would, I'll try to figure it out
and let you know when it's OK.

You should also know that if you have an auto-responder that responds to the
list I will remove your address from the list.

You don't need to read the rest of this for the short version.

The explanation version:

The email list system is part of a mail program I've been using for almost
15 years and it is used by Intuit (Quicken), Tulane, WebMD, Harley-Davidson,
Boston Celtics, and on and on - no slouch program. You would have thought
that with that kind of endorsement the list manager would be close to
perfect. So much for that.

Anyway, I've taken everyone out of the digest mode and put you back in the
standard mode while I figure out what is going on with it. I'm going to be
talking with the company and if it can be fixed I'll try the test list first
that I didn't think I needed to do based on their history. The company is
Ipswitch if you wanted to know.

It looked like any images included with emails sent to the list, and that
includes graphics with signatures, were delivered in a system called base
64 which although looking like gibberish was the way you had to encode and
send images way back in the beginning of the net. This is a group that
should be OK with old stuff but when it comes to this we'll make an
exception and see if we can make it new.

[pestlist] Digets Mode

2011-04-13 Thread Leon Zak
Hello all -

I'm am setting up digest capabilities for this list. Digest mode (and it is
optional by user) will save the emails that have come in over a certain
period and then mail them to you all at once. If the period is set to one
day, all emails coming in that day would be sent to you at one time at the
end of the day.

I can set the digest period and the send time. Digest period options are:
daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

If you think you'd like to use the digest mode, please let me know which
period you would prefer - I can only set it to one.

[pestlist] It's set, votes are in, decision is made.

2011-04-13 Thread Leon Zak
First, I apologize for not saying this in the first email, if you want to
reply please reply directly to me, l...@zaks.com, NOT the list.

The results are in and the mode will be DAILY. What this means is IF you
choose the digest mode you will get one email a day with all of the in it.
If you do not subscribe you will continue to receive the emails as they come
in.

To change TO the digest mode send an email to imail...@museumpests.net and
in the body of the email put:

set mode digest pestlist

If you want to change to the standard mode set an email to
imail...@musumpests.net and put:

set mode standard pestlist

You may switch as often as you wish, but you MUST send the email from the
same address that you are signed up with.

Any questions (if you're receiving this right now, about 1:50pm est, then
you are in the standard - non digest - mode) please send an email directly
to me, not the list - meaning - don't just hit reply to this.

Thanks,
