Here is a link to one article about determining effectiveness of
anoxia treatments for museum objects based on their ability to kill
insects in the core of various materials.

http://arxiv.org/ftp/physics/papers/0611/0611199.pdf

As you all know, there is much more info available about results of
testing with different treatments.

Because we can not take apart or saw through our museum objects, we
need to rely on independent testing done by legitimate researchers in
the field. Based on their findings we can hopefully trust that insects
that can't be seen will be successfully killed in all their stages if
the same procedures they used are carefully followed.

I deal with books and paper so the insects and their larvae we are
concerned about are quite visible under 10X magnification and do not
hide inside of a three dimensional object that can not be readily
opened and thoroughly inspected.

Respectfully,
Sharlane G.

I AM interested in this discussion, and feel it is pertinent to the
list as there are not too many suppliers of the type of equipment used
for this process, and those considering using it or who already have
it want to know the facts concerning its effectiveness (since this has
 been called into question.)

What do you and others feel IS the appropriate time and place for this
type of question if not a public list-serve specifically about
treatments for eradicating/preventing infestations of pests?

When a particular discussion is not useful to me (and there are many),
I just do not read it and then delete any with the same thread as soon

Dear
Linda,

We've been working with EXPM in Portugal and we can confirm
their successful performance in book disinfestation. Static/semi-
dynamic anoxia bubbles are particularly useful for great collection
volumes such as the ones you have.

Right now we're looking for smaller
anoxia systems for smaller objects. The little volume of anoxia needed
makes big anoxia generation economically less viable.

Greetings for
everyone for such great discussions.

newly
built building. Our collections, which include a large clothing
and
textile collection, appear pretty clean right now as far as pests
go,
but a history of carpet beetle infestations makes me wary of moving

old problems to this new facility. I am trying to plan the most

effective yet feasible method for insuring that we don't move pests
with
our collections. What's best? Spot checking and only addressing

problems as they appear? Freezing everything? Having our pest

management company bomb our current collections storage?

If you have
moved recently and dealt with this issue I'd love to get
your advice!

2009-10-01 Thread Luís Pinho

Dear Linda,

We've been working with EXPM in Portugal and we can confirm their successful
performance in book disinfestation. Static/semi-dynamic anoxia bubbles are
particularly useful for great collection volumes such as the ones you have.

Right now we're looking for smaller anoxia systems for smaller objects. The
little volume of anoxia needed makes big anoxia generation economically less
viable.

Greetings for everyone for such great discussions.

Dear Linda Moore,
We have done several works of this kind using anoxia bubbles as well as
vacuuing all the items from the collections to be transferred to the new
deposits with much success regarding preserving both collections and deposits.

You may find further info @ www.expm.com.pt
Feel free to ask for any detailed information.

Dear all museumpestlist
VELOXY is the smallest (all over the world) and
less heavy tool to apply the anoxia method in museums archives and
libraries ; it was properly developed for this purpose and certified by
an European project in 1998 - 2000. Since that time it was improved
upon the suggestions of the people in charge of conservation
Institutes.
Please give a look to the references at RGI's web site: www.

Dear Linda Moore,
One of the best method to ensure you and you colleagues of eradicating any
specie of insect at any stage of its life is the anoxia; this method can be
easily applied by means of the VELOXY system that was also certified through
an European Project carried out with the laboratories of four instituted
belongin to EU ministries dealing with the protection of cultural heritage.
Veloxy is an easy to be used, transportable machinery that was and is used
worldwide by several museums, archives and libraries.

Look at www.rgi-genova.com and take a look to the references.

Hi Linda,

Another idea is to freeze any material you are worried about. I know for
herbarium collections for big moves shifts a refrigerated truck or
trailer has been rented by other institutions and parked outside so
everything could be frozen en mass after leaving the old space and
before swinging into the new space. I'm not sure how expensive this
would be, but it would allow you to isolate your collections in large
groups and outside of the facility where yo have had problems in the past.

Good luck with the move.

Cheers,
Genevieve

I am the Collections Curator at the Fort Collins
Museum Discovery
Science Center, where we are in the planning
stage of a big move to a
newly built building. Our collections, which
include a large clothing
and textile collection, appear pretty clean right
now as far as pests
go, but a history of carpet beetle infestations
makes me wary of moving
old problems to this new facility. I am trying to
plan the most
effective yet feasible method for insuring that
we don't move pests with
our collections. What's best? Spot checking and
only addressing
problems as they appear? Freezing everything?
Having our pest
management company bomb our current collections
storage?

If you have moved recently and dealt with this
issue I'd love to get
your advice!

RE: [pestlist] Moving Clean

2009-09-30 Thread Kaplan, Emily
Hi Linda,

(I sent this message earlier but it appears to have been garbled, apologies if
this is a duplicate!)

As a precautionary measure here at NMAI we froze nearly all of our organic
collections when we moved our collection into a new clean building, even though
there were no obvious signs of active infestation. This was successful and 5
years later we are glad that we did this.

There is a description of what we did on the museumpests.net site in the case
studies section of the treatment page
http://www.museumpests.net/newpage/treatment.asp

You might want to take a look at these articles also in the Journal of the

Dear Linda Moore,
We have done several works of this kind using anoxia bubbles as well as
vacuuing all the items from the collections to be transferred to the new
deposits with much success regarding preserving both collections and
deposits.
You may find further info @ www.expm.com.pt
Feel free to ask for any detailed information.
Kind regards,

I would pack the whole thing and send it to a commercial freezer for a couple
of weeks.  AmeriCold is in Denver and is familiar with mass museum freezings.
Whatever you do, don't bomb your museum.  The chemicals will do nothing to
the insects, but will damage your collection and your health.

Your emails to the pestlist are gibberish.  That's twice I opened your response
to the Moving Clean posting and both times your email was unreadable.
