PostgreSQL's encoding checks have become more airtight over the
versions, so it is no surprise that buggy behaviour in 8.1
has changed by 8.4.

The zero character at the end of your string has been wrong all
along, only the old version does not complain.

You probably never noticed the string truncation because the
zero character is the last one.

You'll need to fix your program so that it does not emit trailing
zero characters.

[GENERAL] pgadmin is changing pgpass.conf

2009-09-16 Thread Howard Cole

Hi All,

I have been having a few problems with my password file recently,
causing my scheduled pg_dump to fail. The problem is that the
pgpass.conf file keeps changing. Eventually I narrowed it down to using
pgadmin. Every time I start pgadmin, it changes the contents of my
pgpass file, even though I do not store my password in pgadmin.

This only seems to have become a problem since installing 8.4 and
associated version of pgadmin.

Is this the desired behaviour or is it a bug?

[GENERAL] Current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL?

2009-09-16 Thread Nathan Widmyer
Hello,

I'm looking for the current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL and I'm
coming up with a lot of confusing links and a bit short on documentation.

I first read that there used to be an xml2 contrib module for Postgres that
provided a lot of functions to read/write and simultaneously validating XML,
and searching and returning columns with XML based upon XPath expressions,
etc... But I read that the capability was going to be moved into the
Postgres baseline (this was 8.3-ish?). Currently, all I've ended up finding
is the lone official document page on the XML data type (
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/datatype-xml.html), XML
functions and operators (
http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/interactive/functions-xml.html), and
the XML Support Pg wiki page (http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/XML_Support).

I just plan on storing already-made XML in a column, then be able to search
on it using where clauses with XPath expressions (e.g. select
tv_show,xpath('/station/times', xml_data) from table_with_xml where
xpath('/name', xml_data)='Captain Kangaroo'). I do understand there is an
xpath() function to return data, so that's solved for.

I'm looking for the functionality that I mentioned above that allowed more
comprehensive XML operations but I'm just not finding any documentation for
it, if it exists.

I have 8.4.0 now, but can go to .1 if there have been great strides made
since .0 was released.
If anyone can help me out, I would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nate

Re: [GENERAL] I need a Postgres Admin $130K + 20K in NYC Any Ideas?

2009-09-16 Thread Robert Mah
As someone who lives in NYC and has for a good 15 years now, your numbers are
way off.

While rent here is quite expensive, not everyone is stupid and plunks down
$2500 for a studio (it can be done in nice buildings). Most people pay maybe
$1500 for a decent studio (less if you want not-so-nice), $2500 for a good
1br, etc. If you’re willing to commute from the outer boroughs, NJ or upstate
(from 30 to 60 min by train) rents can be substantially lower.

NYC is not for everyone, but many people love it here. I certainly do. It’s
not for those who just want a 9-5 job and a quiet life, but if you want
opportunity and action NYC is it. God, I sound like an advert.

Cheers,
Rob

[GENERAL] Default listing on -Fc files

2009-09-16 Thread Francisco Reyes

Is there a way to tell to which table a DEFAULT rule belongs to?

Example:
Have multiple files with serial. The sequence is setup as a default. Because
all tables have the same structure the DEFAULT lines on a file pg_dumped
with -Fc look the same.

The lines look like
DEFAULT public id user
DEFAULT public id user
DEFAULT publid id user

They have different IDs, but I don't know how to tell to which table they
belong so when I do restores of selected tables I would be able to restore
the proper defaults.

[GENERAL] psql exit code, bug ?

2009-09-16 Thread Grzegorz Jaśkiewicz
http://gj.pastebin.com/f119e67bc

Looks like psql loves to report on errors, only when -c is used,
otherwise return code is always 0...

I tested 8.3 and cvs-head, both have the same issue.

Is that the 'by design' (bug/feature) ?

The documentation seems perfectly clear on this point:

psql returns 0 to the shell if it finished normally, 1 if a fatal error of its
own (out of memory, file not found) occurs, 2 if the connection to the server
went bad and the session was not interactive, and 3 if an error occurred in a
script and the variable ON_ERROR_STOP was set.

Well, but what you are looking for from - say - script, that calls
psql to perform single action - is a meaningful exit code. That would
specify whether SQL code returned any errors or not.
This clearly shows, that you can rely only on -c, but others - appear
to be inconsistent. (behave different, depending on how you feed the
input to psql).

why would you store data thats wrapped in two copies of its fieldname

you can always have index on xpath() ...
and than use same expression in WHERE, and postgresql will use index.

All because your silly little ego dictated the need to say amen.

It's the desired behaviour, and is described in the pgAdmin docs. As I

storing passwords in plain text on disk.

 http://search.cpan.org/~sadahiro/Unicode-Normalize-1.03/ .

 I need a function which removes all diacritics (1) and transforms some
 characters to a more compatible form (2) to get a better index on
 strings.

 Best,

 Andi

Re: [GENERAL] Unicode normalization

2009-09-16 Thread Andreas Kalsch

No,

I need a solution which is as generic as possible. I use UTF-8 encoded
unicode strings on all levels. This is what I have done so far:

1) Writing a separate Python command line script for testing - works as
expected:

#!/usr/bin/python

import sys
import unicodedata

str = sys.argv[1].decode('UTF-8')
str = unicodedata.normalize('NFKD', str)
str = ''.join(c for c in str if unicodedata.combining(c) == 0)
print str

2) Transfering this to PL/Python:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION test (str text)
 RETURNS text
AS $$
   import unicodedata
   return unicodedata.normalize('NFKD', str.decode('UTF-8'))
$$ LANGUAGE plpythonu;

Problem: plpython throws an error, where my commandline script did it
correctly:

# select test('aÄÖÜ');

ERROR: plpython: function test could not create return value
DETAIL: type 'exceptions.UnicodeEncodeError': 'ascii' codec can't
encode character u'\u0308' in position 2: ordinal not in range(128)

I use PG 8.3 and Python 2.5.2. How can I make plpython behaving like in
a normal python environment?

In the end it should look like this:

CREATE TABLE t (
...
ts ts_vector NOT NULL
);

INSERT INTO t (ts) VALUES(to_tsvector(normalize(?)));

[GENERAL] 8.4 installer

2009-09-16 Thread Christine Penner

Hi,

I'm using Windows XP Pro.

I am trying to install Postgres 8.4. I had 8.3 installed. Because I
didn't have any important data, to make it easier I removed 8.3, the
data directory, removed the Postgres windows user and removed all
registry values I could find. I also shut down my anti virus and anti
spyware software that was running (and restarted my computer).

When I run the postgres installer (postgresql-8.4.0-1-windows.exe) I
get an error about the file postgresSQL.conf not being found. When
the installer finishes I have an empty data directory. I also tried
installing the data directory in a place other than the program files
directory. I have done this a few times now and I'm just not seeing
what I'm missing. When I originally installed Postgres 8.3 I didn't
use the one click installer. Since then I have upgraded to another
8.3.x without any issues.

[GENERAL] wrong error from ./configure in pgsql 8.3.8 for libxml

2009-09-16 Thread Scott Marlowe
Was building pgsql 8.3.8 from source on a new install of Centos 5.2,
and got this error from ./configure --with-libxml :

checking for xmlSaveToBuffer in -lxml2... no
configure: error: library 'xml2' (version = 2.6.23) is required for XML support

But I had libxml2 v 2.6.26 or so installed. The real problem was that
libxml2-devel wasn't installed. No big deal, just thought I'd mention
it.

Re: [GENERAL] Unicode normalization

2009-09-16 Thread Andreas Kalsch
Update: The error is of course: The function tries to return str
instead of unicode. It is not str.decode('UTF-8') which causes the error.

Re: [GENERAL] Current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL?

2009-09-16 Thread Scott Bailey
I'm looking for the current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL and
I'm coming up with a lot of confusing links and a bit short on
documentation.

Postgres' XML is still lacking in a few spots. But the core
functionality is certainly there to do all of the every day stuff.

The trick with working with XML in the database is to know when to store
it as XML and when to shred it into relational tables. If its a
structured document (looks like something you'd open in Word) save it as
XML. If it looks like something you'd open in Excel then start
shredding. And it looks like maybe you want to do a tv guide type thing.
  That is something you'll want to shred to tables.

I'm looking for the functionality that I mentioned above that allowed
more comprehensive XML operations but I'm just not finding any
documentation for it, if it exists.

What exactly is it you are trying to do but cant?

I'd guess you want that to be:

  return unicodedata.normalize('NFKD', str.decode('UTF-8')).encode('UTF-8');

If you're converting from a utf8 encoding, you probably need to go
back again! This could certainly be made easier though, PG knows what
encoding its strings are stored in, why doesn't it work with unicode
strings by default?

[GENERAL] How to simplify unicode strings

2009-09-16 Thread Andreas Kalsch

Thank you Sam,

this leaded to the correct solution:

CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION simplify (str text)
RETURNS text
AS $$
import unicodedata

s = unicodedata.normalize('NFKD', str.decode('UTF-8'))
s = ''.join(c for c in s if unicodedata.combining(c) == 0)
return s.encode('UTF-8')
$$ LANGUAGE plpythonu;

test=# select simplify('Français va à Paris, () {} [] µ @ º Ångstrøm
Phiat-im hû-hō sī phiat tī 1-ê ki-chhó· jī-bó bīn-téng ê hû-hō. Siōng
phó·-phiàn ê kong-lêng sī kái-piàn ki-chhó· jī-bó ê hoat-im.');

simplify
-
Francais va a Paris, () {} [] μ @ o Angstrøm Phiat-im hu-ho si phiat ti
1-e ki-chho· ji-bo bin-teng e hu-ho. Siong pho·-phian e kong-leng si
kai-pian ki-chho· ji-bo e hoat-im.

(1 row)

One question remains: How is the performance of PL/Python?
When there are syntax errors in the Python code, they are not reported
on CREATE, because the function seems be recompiled on every call.

This leads to the next question: When will the unicode stuff included in
the main distribution?

Andi

I am having a problem with the system freezing when the system is very busy. I

Re: [GENERAL] Regarding initdb pg_ctl

2009-09-16 Thread Vikram Patil
Hey Magnus,

 I tried out your suggestion, we are providing quotes correctly.
We tried out one thing we installed postgresql outside Program Files.
When I say installed I want to mean that I copied compiled binaries.
User installing is local user belonging to Administrators group. Then we
ran initdb utility with data directory to be in same directory (Outside
data directory) . So initdb created it correctly. Then we tried to
register service using pg_ctl/register options. It worked too. Then we
tried to start service so here it failed.

  But when we tried to ran same scenario with runas /user:local_user
pg_ctl start -D Data directory on command prompt, postgres server
started without any problem. So I am confused as theoretically both
scenarios are same. Since service should be started by same user which
is provided later to start postgres through command line. All of these
problems are caused only on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition with
windows XP everything is fine.

Can you provide some inputs on this?

Thanks  Regards,
Vikram

 Thanks Magnus for help.

 Is there any way to start pg_ctl without creating postgres user? I am
trying to use same logged in user to run initdb and start service. As
per documentation it seems to be allowed after 8.3. We tried to use it
the way I describe on Windows XP and it worked without any problem.

Certainly, that works fine.

 Our installer first copies compiled binaries and then try to run
initdb as current user. If it worked then we register service with same
user and password. Users are defined in Active directory on active
directory server ,basically we are using domain\user format to log in
and run installation.
 Once registration is finished, we need to start service.

That's a pretty standard thing, it pretty much works.

 I tried to run initdb with data directory path outside Program Files
.It works fine But when data directory path is located inside program
files, initdb fails.

That should work. Another possibility is that it breaks because you
have spaces in the path name, and are not quoting it properly. The
quoting rules on Windows can be very strange :-)

 As per your advice I tried process monitor, it shows that there are no
failures. So we can assume it is a issue with permissions.

Can you see it opening postgres.exe? Or do you get a not foud error
somewhere?

 I am new to PostgreSQL. I have been trying to restore a compressed(.gz)

 After some 8 or 9 tables are restored the program exists giving error:
 Segmentation Fault.

That's weird ... gets_fromFile certainly looks pretty bulletproof from
here. Can you extract a self-contained test case? Also, did you build
the psql executable yourself, or get it from somewhere else, and if so
where?

 But I had libxml2 v 2.6.26 or so installed. The real problem was that
 libxml2-devel wasn't installed.

Well, in point of fact the library is *not* there so far as configure
can tell --- there's no libxml2.so or libxml2.a file. And in any case
we're not going to put in anything as platform-specific as suggesting
that you might need a -devel RPM (to say nothing of the similar but not
identical packaging conventions on other platforms). I think that's
just something you have to know about if you're building software on Red
Hat-based platforms.

Just out of interest, how did you install PostgreSQL?

Did you install a pre-built binary? If so, from where?

Guessing from the paths, it doesn't look like you built it yourself or
used something like MacPorts, but it's better to know than guess.

I ask in particular because there have been big problems caused by
building PostgreSQL as a universal binary. It seems to be important to
configure it and build it only for the architecture you're actually
using. That probably goes for ia32 vs x86_64 as well as ppc32/ppc64 .

Well, it's possible to do it but it's not easy --- you need to deal
with the fact that the configure-generated headers should be different
for the different arches. There were some discussions in -hackers
last year about how to do it.

The reported location of the error is not code that I would expect to be
subject to architectural issues, though, so I suspect this isn't
immediately relevant.
