[GENERAL] pgadmin is changing pgpass.conf
Hi All, I have been having a few problems with my password file recently, causing my scheduled pg_dump to fail. The problem is that the pgpass.conf file keeps changing. Eventually I narrowed it down to using pgadmin. Every time I start pgadmin, it changes the contents of my pgpass file, even though I do not store my password in pgadmin. This only seems to have become a problem since installing 8.4 and associated version of pgadmin. Is this the desired behaviour or is it a bug? [GENERAL] Current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL?
Hello, I'm looking for the current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL and I'm coming up with a lot of confusing links and a bit short on documentation. I first read that there used to be an xml2 contrib module for Postgres that provided a lot of functions to read/write and simultaneously validating XML, and searching and returning columns with XML based upon XPath expressions, etc... But I read that the capability was going to be moved into the Postgres baseline (this was 8.3-ish?). Currently, all I've ended up finding is the lone official document page on the XML data type ( http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/datatype-xml.html), XML functions and operators ( http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/interactive/functions-xml.html), and the XML Support Pg wiki page (http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/XML_Support). I just plan on storing already-made XML in a column, then be able to search on it using where clauses with XPath expressions (e.g. select tv_show,xpath('/station/times', xml_data) from table_with_xml where xpath('/name', xml_data)='Captain Kangaroo'). I do understand there is an xpath() function to return data, so that's solved for. I'm looking for the functionality that I mentioned above that allowed more comprehensive XML operations but I'm just not finding any documentation for it, if it exists. I have 8.4.0 now, but can go to .1 if there have been great strides made since .0 was released. If anyone can help me out, I would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Nate
Re: [GENERAL] I need a Postgres Admin $130K + 20K in NYC Any Ideas?
As someone who lives in NYC and has for a good 15 years now, your numbers are way off. While rent here is quite expensive, not everyone is stupid and plunks down $2500 for a studio (it can be done in nice buildings). Most people pay maybe $1500 for a decent studio (less if you want not-so-nice), $2500 for a good 1br, etc. If youre willing to commute from the outer boroughs, NJ or upstate (from 30 to 60 min by train) rents can be substantially lower. NYC is not for everyone, but many people love it here. I certainly do. Its not for those who just want a 9-5 job and a quiet life, but if you want opportunity and action NYC is it. God, I sound like an advert. [GENERAL] Default listing on -Fc files
Is there a way to tell to which table a DEFAULT rule belongs to? Example: Have multiple files with serial. The sequence is setup as a default. Because all tables have the same structure the DEFAULT lines on a file pg_dumped with -Fc look the same. The lines look like DEFAULT public id user DEFAULT public id user DEFAULT publid id user They have different IDs, but I don't know how to tell to which table they belong so when I do restores of selected tables I would be able to restore the proper defaults. -- Sent via pgsql-general mailing list (pgsql-general@postgresql.org) To make changes to your subscription: http://www.postgresql.org/mailpref/pgsql-general

[GENERAL] psql exit code, bug ?

Well, but what you are looking for from - say - script, that calls psql to perform single action - is a meaningful exit code. That would specify whether SQL code returned any errors or not. [GENERAL] 8.4 installer
Hi, I'm using Windows XP Pro. I am trying to install Postgres 8.4. I had 8.3 installed. Because I didn't have any important data, to make it easier I removed 8.3, the data directory, removed the Postgres windows user and removed all registry values I could find. I also shut down my anti virus and anti spyware software that was running (and restarted my computer). When I run the postgres installer (postgresql-8.4.0-1-windows.exe) I get an error about the file postgresSQL.conf not being found. When the installer finishes I have an empty data directory. I also tried installing the data directory in a place other than the program files directory. I have done this a few times now and I'm just not seeing what I'm missing. When I originally installed Postgres 8.3 I didn't use the one click installer. Since then I have upgraded to another 8.3.x without any issues. Re: [GENERAL] Current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL?
I'm looking for the current state of XML capabilities in PostgreSQL and I'm coming up with a lot of confusing links and a bit short on documentation. Postgres' XML is still lacking in a few spots. But the core functionality is certainly there to do all of the every day stuff. The trick with working with XML in the database is to know when to store it as XML and when to shred it into relational tables. If its a structured document (looks like something you'd open in Word) save it as XML. If it looks like something you'd open in Excel then start shredding. And it looks like maybe you want to do a tv guide type thing. That is something you'll want to shred to tables. I'm looking for the functionality that I mentioned above that allowed more comprehensive XML operations but I'm just not finding any documentation for it, if it exists. What exactly is it you are trying to do but cant? And it looks like maybe you want to do a tv guide type thing. That is something you'll want to shred to tables. I'm looking for the functionality that I mentioned above that allowed more comprehensive XML operations but I'm just not finding any documentation for it, if it exists. What exactly is it you are trying to do but cant? [GENERAL] How to simplify unicode strings
Thank you Sam, this leaded to the correct solution: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION simplify (str text) RETURNS text AS $$ import unicodedata s = unicodedata.normalize('NFKD', str.decode('UTF-8')) s = ''.join(c for c in s if unicodedata.combining(c) == 0) return s.encode('UTF-8') $$ LANGUAGE plpythonu; test=# select simplify('Français va à Paris, () {} [] µ @ º Ångstrøm Phiat-im hû-hō sī phiat tī 1-ê ki-chhó· jī-bó bīn-téng ê hû-hō. When there are syntax errors in the Python code, they are not reported on CREATE, because the function seems be recompiled on every call. Re: [GENERAL] Regarding initdb pg_ctl
Hey Magnus, I tried out your suggestion, we are providing quotes correctly. We tried out one thing we installed postgresql outside Program Files. When I say installed I want to mean that I copied compiled binaries. User installing is local user belonging to Administrators group. Then we ran initdb utility with data directory to be in same directory (Outside data directory) . So initdb created it correctly. Then we tried to register service using pg_ctl/register options. It worked too. Then we tried to start service so here it failed. But when we tried to ran same scenario with runas /user:local_user pg_ctl start -D Data directory on command prompt, postgres server started without any problem. So I am confused as theoretically both scenarios are same. Since service should be started by same user which is provided later to start postgres through command line. All of these problems are caused only on Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Edition with windows XP everything is fine. Can you provide some inputs on this? Thanks Regards, Vikram -Original Message- From: Magnus Hagander [mailto:mag...@hagander.net] Sent: Tuesday, September 15, 2009 1:19 AM To: Vikram Patil Cc: pgsql-general@postgresql.org Subject: Re: [GENERAL] Regarding initdb pg_ctl On Tue, Sep 15, 2009 at 03:55, Vikram Patil vpa...@actuate.com wrote: Thanks Magnus for help. Is there any way to start pg_ctl without creating postgres user? I am trying to use same logged in user to run initdb and start service. As per documentation it seems to be allowed after 8.3. We tried to use it the way I describe on Windows XP and it worked without any problem. Certainly, that works fine. Our installer first copies compiled binaries and then try to run initdb as current user. If it worked then we register service with same user and password. Users are defined in Active directory on active directory server ,basically we are using domain\user format to log in and run installation. Once registration is finished, we need to start service. That's a pretty standard thing, it pretty much works. I tried to run initdb with data directory path outside Program Files .It works fine But when data directory path is located inside program files, initdb fails. That should work. Another possibility is that it breaks because you have spaces in the path name, and are not quoting it properly. The quoting rules on Windows can be very strange :-) As per your advice I tried process monitor, it shows that there are no failures. So we can assume it is a issue with permissions. Can you see it opening postgres.exe? There were some discussions in -hackers last year about how to do it. It seems to be important to configure it and build it only for the architecture you're actually using. That probably goes for ia32 vs x86_64 as well as ppc32/ppc64 . Well, it's possible to do it but it's not easy --- you need to deal with the fact that the configure-generated headers should be different for the different arches. There were some discussions in -hackers last year about how to do it. The reported location of the error is not code that I would expect to be subject to architectural issues, though, so I suspect this isn't immediately relevant. regards, tom lane --
