[Pharo-dev] looking for an author of a Beginning Pharo or related

2019-02-28 Thread Stéphane Ducasse
Hi guys

We have been contacted by a (good) editor that would like to publish on
Beginning Pharo or related.
I have a lot of material that I can give but no energy to write such book :)

If one of you in interested, let me know. I could even be a co-author.

Stef

I didn't do any formal benchmark. The XWindows display is noticeably laggy
when you drag windows in Pharo, but I didn't find it annoying. The baseline
installs I did were not noticeably slower than what I'm used to. I did
some testing and debugging for several hours and I forgot I was running
XSL, except for the keyboard. I haven't figured out why my quotes and
apostrophes and tildes are not right. I think I had that problem in a
lubuntu VM under Windows 10, too.

Maybe the WSL method will be a useful alternative.

This is great, do you notice any performance impact?

I had to install a lubuntu VM as a workaround to the existing Iceberg
"long file paths" issues.

[Pharo-dev] Running Pharo under Ubuntu (Windows Subsystem for Linux)

2019-02-28 Thread Christopher Fuhrman
Thanks to Cyril who told me it was possible, I got Pharo 7 Unix running
under the Ubuntu 18 that's part of Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) in
Windows 10. It's not a VM VirtualBox.

I documented the install steps on my new blog that uses Jekyll and github
pages, which actually took longer to set up than the Pharo under WSL :)

The Mesa install step on the blog might be useful for documenting how to
get Pharo 7 to work in Ubuntu 18?
