[Phono-L] Rear Mount Talkophone

2012-09-17 Thread harvey kravitz
I have a rear mount Talkophone Arm that I recently purchased and I would like
to see how it is mounted to the rear of the machine. This is for a Clarke
Model. I don't want to drill holes in the case. If somebody can provide
pictures of the mounted bracket along with the inside of the case. I want to
see if the bracket is held on by nuts or a plate like a Victor. Thanks in
advance for any help.

[Phono-L] Have YOU ever purchased a Crap-O-Phone???

2012-09-17 Thread Dennis Back
Anyone on the list ever knowingly buy a Crap-O-Phone?  As in...on purpose?

Fess up.  :-)

Ok.

I'll be first.

Years ago, I saw an octagonal cased crap-o-phone that I thought was kind of
cool looking.  Someone from this list or the Phonolist said that they would
order a bunch of them and the price was reasonable, as I recall.

So I bought one. It had the usual portable motor and turntable, petaled brass
horn and the usual cobbled tone arm and reproducer. Not a bad sounding
reproducer, either.  I still have it and I point out  to visitors that these
things are still being made, albeit poorly.

Anyone else ever buy one and if so, why?

I accidentally purchased a horn from one, I entered the starting bid ($15.00)
to see how high it would go and I won it. I kept if for years before selling
it to another collector who needed a horn. I took a loss on it but did not
care as it was being used. Steve

Since it's a brass horn, I'm guessing it has been chemically treated to look
like bronze...

Yes, I bought one years ago. It had a very attractive case and just looked
cool. I paid about $50.00 for it. Mine, too, sounds halfway decent. I'm sure
I'll get a lot of flack for this, but I consider them to be a part of the
history of phonographs.

I actually thought about purchasing one, to convert to a dock for my iPhone,
but better judgement took over. It would have to be under $100 to consider for
another use... So, instead I made an iPhone dock out of old phonograph wood
salvaged from Charles McCarn's dump.

Re: [Phono-L] Have YOU ever purchased a Crap-O-Phone???

2012-09-17 Thread Scott and Denise Corbett
We gladly purchased a genuine Crap-O-Phone from a man who had bought it and
found out it was fake. He purchased a nice Victor III from us and asked if I
would pay him $40 for his Crap-O-Phone because he never wanted to see it
again. I gave him the $40 because it had a Victor III-IV motor and cast
iron turntable!

We saw another one that had an Edison TRIUMPH motor (yes really). They added
a gear for a spindle. I did not wish to pay his $425.00 price Triumph motor
or not.

Once, we were offered 300 Crap-O-Phones at $30 each. I didn't even want
one, let alone a big pile of Crap (-O-Phones)! :-) We dubbed them
Franken-phonos because they were made from dead phonograph parts.

One more story: I knew a man who traveled to India now then to visit his
wife's family. He went by a place that makes the C- O- Phones purchased
items that they removed from other 'dead' phonographs and couldn't use. His
suitcase was weighed down with original Victor back brackets, bullet brakes,
concert reproducers, etc, all for next to nothing!

The soundbox is remarkably light and has excellent sound when you consider its
construction. They actually do sound good. I agree with Harvey, when sold as
a reproduction they are part of the phonograph group and I know people who
purchased them as they could not afford an outside horn machine. Steve

2012-09-17 Thread wayne holznagel
I was given an old 78 over the weekend. Usually I don't even want the 78s as
I don't have much room but this one is a bit different. Warren G Hardings
late president of the United States recording of 021042 America/Republican
Party and A Tribute to out Disabled Soldiers on a black/white Pathe Actuelle
record label. As one would expect, it is about as mint as a record can be.
Probably listened to once then not looked at again. My question, what kind of
value does this record have (or not as the case may be).
