2012-11-15 Thread Ron L'Herault
Got a friend with a lathe? Maybe he or she can cut the head off a shoulder
bolt, turn it down a bit and you can glue it in the hole at the end so that
you could put a nut on the end to hold the reel in place.

John,
Here are pictures of the projector and the spindle. Pic spindle3 is the
spindle removed from the projector. It has a hole in the back which allows
it to slide over a post on the arm. The post was broken off of the arm but
I was able to attach it back using glue and a screw through the arm and into
the post. You will notice that the outermost portion of the spindle is
missing so there is no way to secure the film reel to the spindle.
Thanks,
John

8mm/Super8 film and projectors?   I recently acquired a Bell and Howell 10ms

the projector is broken.  Just wondering if anyone may have one lying around

Re: [Phono-L] Special Edition Columbia Record???

2012-11-15 Thread Vinyl Visions
Steve, your record sounds like one to benefit widows and orphans because of
the subject matter on the label. I'm still not sure of the purpose of my record
with Kaiser Wilhelm at the Mozart Music Verein in NY was. I "GOOGLED" Mozart
Music Verein New York and found an article from 1894 about the 40th anniversary
of this music club. The Verein (club) was started in New York City in 1854 to
further the musical interests in the works of Mozart and other contemporary
composers. I can't find anything to indicate that this club had anything to do
with providing help or care to German war refugees, but obviously this article
is less than complete. I'm puzzled about the purpose of the record, except
maybe a historical recording of a concert held for Kaiser Wilhelm? Since there
were only several hundred members, the demand for this record must have been
low and doesn't seem to be a great choice for a fundraiser for war widows and
children, since the Kaiser was mostly responsible for t
he mayhem created in WWI...Any more ideas?Curt

Re: [Phono-L] Other Interests

2012-11-15 Thread John Selph
Jim,
Thanks for the reply. That Peggyback service sounds like a good deal.
I have been converting my videotapes for quite some time now, with more than
acceptable results. As it stands right now, I have converted my VHS and 8MM
tapes and am beginning on my Hi8 tapes. My process utilizes my Sony
DCR-TRV350 to digitize the signal "on the fly" directly to the computer
where I capture IN an AVI format. I then edit as necessary and save as an
MP4 file. I usually create DVD's to use as backup as well as my computer
backups.
For my film process, I made sure I got a projector with variable speed to
eliminate flicker. I am able to use a video transfer adapter to project the
image and capture it on my camcorder, which, because of it's "pass through"
capabilities, digitizes the video in real time directly to the computer.
The results are then treated to the same process of editing as any other
digital file. I also have a slide scanner to convert my slides and 35mm
negatives, and the flatbed scanner handles photos very well.
As far as being time consuming, yes it is. Everything is done in real time
and if you have to go through a film or tape more than once, you are
doubling or tripling the running time just to convert it. BUT, I am
retired, and this is something to do that I enjoy. Plus, some of my wife's
co-workers heard what I am doing and want me to convert their films - For a
Fee, so I may be able to pay for the equipment over time. As it is, I've
only invested about $100 total, so it's not too bad.
Regarding the professional hardware, you are right that it is expensive,
however a good telecine adapter can be purchase for under $4k that actually
copies 8MM and Super8 films, frame by frame. You then "stitch" it back
together in the computer using their program for a "flawless" transfer.
I like the Peggyback idea of storing files online and being able to share
them with family. I do that on a smaller scale using Dropbox and may have
to see how that would work on my own webpage (should I ever get it built!!).
Thanks again and as always, any and all thoughts, ideas, or recommendations
are greatly appreciated.
John

I also bought a projector to convert my 8mm movies. But it has a tendency to
damage films. Besides, it would be a huge amount of work. And DVD's are
considered of date these days. Best way is to have someone who has
professional 8mm to MP3 video converter equipment. Yes, you can buy a
machine like that for, uh, $15K or something, but is easier to let the
professionals do it for you.

Have you heard of Peggybank.com? I just sent about 100 8mm films to to
Peggybank to have them converted. Check out their website, and read the
recent article by Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal on Peggybank. Do
a Google search on "Peggybank Wall Street Journal". Even better than getting
MP3 files videos for your computer (or if you insist, old fashioned DVD's if
you pay extra), they give you a free webpage at peggybank.com where they
post ALL videos and still pictures that they digitize for you. So instead of
emailing my 100 MP3 videos to my relatives, I only have to give them the
link to my webpage! I believe friends will also be able to download the
videos, in addition to watching them, but I'm not sure (mine aren't ready
yet).
