[Phono-L] The Death of Amberola III SN304

2013-03-22 Thread clockworkhome

It is with great sadness that I note the death of a fine and rare example of an
Amberola III. The III wasn't even sick. It played until the bitter end. It's
death came at the hands of someone on eBay who decided to part it out. The
cabinet, rear inspection door, motor, Diamond A Reproducer, and other parts
were drawn and quartered because someone figured they would sell for more than
the whole machine. I believe only about 1,200 of these machines were made.
They are only rarely found in such nice condition as 304 was. We Edison
fanatics will miss her.

Best wishes to a very quiet list,

Al

Hello, I have photos, $27.00 includes priority mail shipping in a 7x7x6 box.
The box is excellent, it does show age the label is brown but all there. It
has
the smaller box cemented inside with the holder for the Model H reproducer. I
have photos if anyone is interested. I paid $20 or $25 for it years ago, with
shipping I will about break even. Steve

I contacted the seller today, who is in a relatively remote part of British
Columbia, to ask why. The response was that it's easier to ship small parts.

Re: [Phono-L] The Death of Amberola III SN304

2013-03-22 Thread chuck richards
Thank you for posting that Al!

This is just yet another example of the widespread
ignorance and greed in which we find ourselves immersed.

This kind of stuff happens all of the time, unfortunately.

A similar situation happened recently involving
a nicely working recorder/reproducer for a Dictaphone
model 12 machine. Someone on the TMF list had a mysterious
recorder/reproducer pictured, and he was asking what
it is. Columbia or Edison?

I recognized it as the one for my working model 12
Dictaphone. He had offered to sell it or trade for
it. But...guess what? ...By the time I got to
asking him for a trade so I could obtain it and have
a working spare for my model 12 machine, the reply I got
back was: I had no use for it so I scrapped it

So, there you go. Only in this case there was not even any
monetary gain, nor greed, nor any reason other than
ignorance that caused the untimely death of this perfectly
fine working unit. Some people are just destructive.

One less Amberola lll in the universe, and one less
recorder/reproducer for a Dictaphone model 12.

Karma. There is still Karma.
And a good Karma can easily run over any Dogma.

OK, was it something I said?

There has been only 1 posting since last Friday to my email address from
Phono-L.

My own posting has not shown up either.

Have I been excommunicated? Is it because I only own a Victor II and a VTLA
with the rest being just Edison machines? Oops, I forgot I have a Columbia
Eagle somewhere, can that bring me some redemption?

Arvin,

Yes, it appears to be that greed, ignorance, and
just plain old mediocrity are everywhere.

Sometimes even in places where they would least likely
be suspected.

[Phono-L] Columbia Record reprints, 1904-1917

2013-03-22 Thread Ryan Barna
Greetings!

Well, after several months of hard work, I have finally completed the
last installments of the Columbia Record. You can now purchase the
whole set from 1904-1917.

If you've never heard of the Columbia Record before, it was the house
organ for Columbia dealers, just like the Edison Phonograph Monthly
was to Edison, and the Voice of the Victor was to Victor. We already
have full reprints of the Edison Phonograph Monthly available thanks
to Wendell Moore, and now we can add the Columbia Record to the list.
And with all the publications relating to Columbia that came out in
recent years, these volumes easily compliment them. If you're only
interested in Victor and Edison collectibles and history, these are
also essential to get an idea of what their biggest competitor was
doing.

So now you can now purchase all fourteen volumes from 1904 to 1917.
Prices are $129 US, $169 Canada, $189 International, all postpaid. I
know these may seem a little high, but believe me, these are the
lowest prices I could get them at (600+ sheets with each one spiral
bound). If you can't afford a full set, and only want one or two
volumes, almost all of them are only $14 each with free US shipping.
If you are a library or an institute, I can also ship these in advance
with an invoice enclosed.

If you purchased nine volumes from me last month (only covering 1904
to 1912) you can have the remaining five volumes for $40 US postpaid.
If you also bought some sets from me in January or before, I can also
let you have the remaining volumes at a special price if you email me
for details.

Here is the link to full descriptions and page samples for each volume:

[Phono-L] Victor VV-XII sn 504

2013-03-22 Thread Bob Maffit
Phono Listers:

Maybe a little karma is weighing in on Clockwork Al's laments regarding
parting out phonos, as I can gratefully report to those of you who were
similarly concerned about my research and consideration of doing such with
my Victor VV-XII a short while back, it is done and works wonderfully
well.

I don't know the protocol regarding posting pics, so need a little guidance
in how to do so.

Ideally, submitting a post to phonolist with a couple of pic attachments
would work. If not, please advise as what to do and maybe I can get some
assistance with photo-bucket or something.

I am thankful I listened to you listers with encouragement, offers of
support and help, and even those with a little criticism. *smile*

First, I want to thank my phono friends Gayle Voisine Don Keil for all of
their work and yes, you phonelisters as well.

Given its sn is 504, I think it is now the earliest VV-Xii known on the
planet! or...something like that! sounds good

At any rate, another phono saved!

again, thanks

later

Bob

[Phono-L] Older Grafonola Auto Stop

2013-03-22 Thread Arvin Casas
Phono List Friends,

A newbie question / request. I was wondering if anyone out there is
familiar enough with the older Columbia Grafonolas to help me with my 75's
auto stop?

My 75, when the switch is engaged below the platter, stops arbitrarily
during play. I've no idea if this is par for this older system or if there
is anything I can do to tweak and set the brake properly.

I've read and have followed what little documentation exists, and it is
still unclear to me how to get this to work, at least in the way I interpret
it should. I recognize the mechanism was later improved (e.g., the
Viva-Tonal auto stop), but I don't know how well (or poorly) I can expect
this ancestor to function.

Please feel free to contact me / consult off list as I'm not sure this would
be of great interest to the majority of the Phono Listers.

Thanks!

Arvin

2013-03-22 Thread DanKj
Was this the one in Spain, for a minimum of $650 + $250 shipping? That's
the closest thing I could find, in Completed Items.

I think I have almost the same model - from England, old-style oak cabinet,
tone-arm with angled reflex bends, and the funny bifurcated horn.
Mine needs its reproducer to be repaired the spring either rehooked or
replaced, so I've never heard how well those dual horns work! I can't
imagine these are worth even half his starting price.

Add me to the list. I just had this happen to me recently on th'Bay with
a guy trying to auction off an oddball Columbia made in the UK that was
one of the in-between hybrids they made of a Viva-Tonal and the older
Grafonolas.

The seller was asking a little too high for the piece so I asked him if he
would consider selling it for slightly less but ONLY IF it did not sell
for his price (or more) during his auction. I wasn't lowballing him to
end his auction and prevent him from riding out the last second bidding
war he was hoping for. It was only if it didn't sell. I was offering him
a safe plan B.

He basically replied that if he couldn't get his price, which was as low
as he would ever go, he would chop it up and sell it for parts and make
more.
