Hello all Here is a link to the cabinets made by Eduardo Portilla in Lima, Peru. http://s197.photobucket.com/user/john9ten/library/Victor%20VI%20Repro%20Cabinets He is a phonograph collector of 20 years experience. He makes the Victor VI machine cabinet and also two models of disc cabinet, the Cabinet that Matches and the rare Herzog 820 cabinet. I have personally seen the Vic VI cabinet and the Cabinet that Matches model. The Cabinet that Matches models were also made for the Vic IV and Vic V, I don't know what others it may have been made for. I am amazed at the quality of even the needle cups in the Cabinet that Matches model. Enjoy the pics! I will post a separate email and link for the horns. [Phono-L] Another new wax cylinder maker?
I may be out of the loop on this but I don't ever remember hearing of this guy making wax cylinders. I know of Morris in the UK and Shawn Borri in US but were others aware of this one: _Richards Laboratories - Home_ (http://www.richardslaboratories.com/) Steve Ramm ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
Re: [Phono-L] Another new wax cylinder maker?
Hi Steve, Yes, that's me. It's a part of a very long ongoing project that I started in the late 1970s. I got my cylinder mold about 95% done back around 1984 or so, and it sat unfinished until the summer of 2009 when I finally got around to having the outer steel cylinder bored out to size. It was 2009 when I started seriously working on my brown wax formula. My web site tells the whole story in detail. http://www.richardslaboratories.com Blanks are available for sale now. A friend of mine brings some of the items here, including the Mahogany Victor spearpoint horn and the Victor VI cabinet and matching record cabinet repros. I was astounded to find they were repros. Out of curiosity I ordered a set of cygnet decals from the guy (he also makes digital decals like Glenn does) and they are amazing. He is a very friendly guy and is quick to respond to emails. He speaks very good English. If you are considering one of those horns I would recommend them. How are they in terms of a repro compared to what else is available? Also, I am wondering who is the best wizard are restoring the original horn. I have an Opera that came out of a farm auction in MN and the guy was quite handy and tried a go at fixing it. It has the original decals the rest of the horn has at least been lightened and reglued, maybe refinished. It’s not bad, actually the bell looks good from a distance, but it is splitting. The elbo he spray painted brown. Interestingly didn’t touch the rest of the machine, it is completely original and super nice.
