Ron- I think the electric pick up Edison reproducers have a stylus cross bar 
that has a hole in the center of it to accept a steel needle. Charlie

Geometry is wrong for it to play verticals in a lateral pickup. Do a search on 
“Hughes Stylus” for an example of something that does.
