[Phono-L] Rocky Horror
Subject: Re: [Phono-L] Rocky Horror Hi Art, He is probably a very nice guy and your translation sounds much better, I was just thinking that Devilsdung described the way the phono he bid on appears, at least to me he described the phono. Actually, his bid seems to have lets some credibility to the phono. Steve Devil's Dung is also a nickname for Asefoetida- an extremely powerful smelling (stinking?) medicinal gum used as a stomach remedy and an ingredient in eastern cooking. It tastes much better than it smells. Eric Stott
[Phono-L] Test
Just a test- I have not been getting messages lately. NO luck. If anyone has a few in there possession and would like to sell them please let me know. I would appreciate it. Thanks, Vince
[Phono-L] polishing stuff, was Weekend Flea Market Find
I'm no expert, but the problem with nickel plate is that often it tends to lose it's luster over time, and no amount of polishing can restore it- I can make the surface smooth and glossy, but it's a greyish gloss. Eric Stott
[Phono-L] Interesting copper horn
This was also discussed on the other phonograph list. It's the horn from an early Magnavox public address system (not a radio horn, although they're very similar) which has had the paint stripped from the bell. It's considerably heavier than an Edison horn. [Phono-L] E-bay listing for the AUXETOPHONE
Is the Auxetophone still in the ballroom of the Ringling mansion in Sarasota Fla? It had a painted case to match to match the room. I saw it years ago and it was rather worn from tourist handling, and bits were missing. Eric Stott - Original Message - From: taediso...@aol.com To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Sent: Sunday, February 06, 2005 1:06 PM Subject: Re: [Phono-L] E-bay listing for the AUXETOPHONE There are only 16 Auxetophones confirmed to exist world-wide, two of which are permanently locked away in museums. It's amazing that three should change hands in less than a year, but I suspect that after those sales it is very unlikely that another will come on the market in the next decade. All the machines I know of are owned by collectors who have no current interest in selling.
[Phono-L] Racial Inferences (was Coin-op'd Edison . . .)
Well, I do apologize, but I do wonder that you've never heard them- those references are neither local nor current. Eric, I am sorry, but I can not let your Dutch references go without responding. I don't think that your Dutch = inferior comments were pertainent or in good taste. I have not heard the examples you quote in my little corner of the English-speaking world, so it does give one hope that the phrases you quote are more local than you realize. In any event, I do hope that we can have meaningful discourse without racial characterizations such as you provided in your posting. They do sound a little like fingernails on a blackboard to some of us. Respectfully, Don Mayer ___ Phono-L mailing list Phono-L@oldcrank.org http://oldcrank.org/mailman/listinfo/phono-l
[Phono-L] Phono buying in 1975...
Believe it or not, those were not low prices for the time. It was still not uncommon for great finds to turn up at auctions or come out of farm houses. Nowadays most everything is picked over and Ebay has made most everyone a dealer eager to make a fortune. Even when something new comes to the market the owner has been told Oh this one is very unique and rare a thousand times. What gets me is seeing a piece set in an antique shop for YEARS, never getting marked down, never moving. Makes you wonder what school of business they didn't graduate from. Loran In Europe there was a charming term for items in a shop that just wouldn't move. Shop Daughters - the daughter you just can't marry off. Eric Stott
[Phono-L] ANTIQUE EDISON BROWN WAX CYLINDER RECORD made 1896
Well, the Anvil Chorus is from IL TROVATORE, so that part matches up Eric Stott - Original Message - From: Phil O'Keefe pokeefe...@netzero.com I consulted the Edison cylinder record database and I think it lists No. 504 as: TROVATORE (Giuseppe Verdi / Salvatore Cammarano), Recorded in 1902 by an unspecified orchestra. No. 514 was the Clipper March, recorded in 1897/98 by an unspecified orchestra. There is no listing for the title Anvil Chorus. If I am reading this correctly, then this cylinder may be a fraud. -Phil O'Keefe Edison Phonology http://www.engineeringexpert.net/edphono.htm
