Re: [Phono-L] My review of the Woody Guthrie Box (including the vinyl78 discuissed here)
And I have the box set in hand as of last evening, and the two tracks on the vinyl disc are not included on the cds. The Greatest Thing That Man Has Ever Done is included on the cds, but it's part of the radio drama, and the version on the disc is a solo recording. There's lots to go through here, so I'll be enjoying it for a while. The box set looks like an old 78rpm book. Matthew ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
Re: [Phono-L] newly-pressed 78 in latest Woody Guthrie box set. APre-Review
Thanks for the informative post. I'm looking forward to this, as I already have the Rounder 3-lp box set of the LOC recordings, and will enjoy the extra stories and songs. I'm guessing, by a cursory look at the extensive track listing, that the 3lp set had been edited from the whole tape of course, but that the songs and stories were excerpted here and there, so that you will obviously listen to the whole thing to get the complete set. The lp set seems to end abruptly with no goodbye or any sort of ending, so it will be good to have the whole thing. Matthew ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
[Phono-L] newly-pressed 78 in latest Woody Guthrie box set.
Based on the info in this article, there's a 78 made for this box set of Woody Guthrie material. I have an e-mail into the Woody Guthrie organization, asking them if the disc is to be played with a needle made for 78s, or one made for 33s, since it could be either case. I don't want to use the wrong stylus. The disc includes a song from the box set, and a 1961 Dylan recording of one of the VD songs Wooddy sang. The press release from Rounder is here: http://www.rounder.com/2013/08/news/definitive-woody-guthrie-collection-american-radical-patriot-coming-from-rounder-records-on-october-22 I eagerly await my set, being shipped to me, but I'll not use the 78 disc until I know for sure. [Phono-L] Any modern-produced 78s?
Hello from hot Phoenix. I'm wondering if there are any modern 78s that have been produced any time recently? The only one I ever heard of was the one produced in the 70s by R. Crumb, of novelty songs. I bought the three pieces that comprise a modern cartridge for my Stanton turntable, so that my existing 78s play as well as they can for my ability to transfer them digitally. This ability made me think of my question. I know that some analog manufacturers, especially of the Bluenote label, have been producing lps that are the size of 33s but actually play at 45 speed. Perhaps the reason they don't consider 78 speed is because you need to use a wider needle. I've never understood why the manufacturers of those USB turntables don't get a double stylus so that you don't wreck your 78s with a 33 needle, but that's a different subject. Anyhow, any thoughts about my original question? Matthew ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org

I found this book from Audible as well. If anyone knows, how does this compare to the 1978 biography called A Streak Of Luck? Thanks a lot. Matthew ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org

I can't say about phonograph stuff, but maybe you're interested in the musical instrument museum. www.TheMim.org If you're into collecting 33s, there are several good record stores here in town. Matthew ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
Re: [Phono-L] Anyone in Phoenix repair phonographs?
Hello, OK thanks for the info. Lakeport California huh? My dad drives out to San Jose quite often, and I figured out, thanks to www.Radio-Locator.com that this town of Lakeport is about 140 miles away, but I don't know in which direction. If it's that distance before you get out to San Jose, then this might work for my dad to drop it off. If not, then at least it might not cost as much to ship it. We'll just have to see. As far as I know, I'm not related to a Peter Bullis, though I do like that kind of music, and will have to check it out. As far as Andy's question, I don't know about the authenticity of the machine, though a friend of mine has a book of some kind with all sorts of pictures and dates and things. Thanks a lot. [Phono-L] Anyone in Phoenix repair phonographs?
Hello, it looks like it's been three years since I've been on this list, as I found my old postings in the archives. I've just acquired another phonograph, this one smaller than the German one I already have. This one says His Master's Voice on it, but doesn't appear to have a model number of any kind. It has a cloth-covered horn, and no doors like my other phonograph, so you can't change the volume. The motor is very quiet, and the sound that eminates from the horn is very loud, even with the soft needles I use. The problem is that the speed varies. Even with the speed lever there, it changes from regular to faster than normal. Apart from that, this is a wonderful machine. I've read online, and it appears that the cause of this problem is that the governor is either in need of adjustment, or more likely a complete replacement. I have read that this isn't one of the more expensive jobs, compared to soundbox rebuild or other internal repairs. There are two main reasons why I wouldn't attempt this myself. First, I haven't done this before, and second, since I'm blind, though good with my hands in taking apart autoharps and generally good with tools and such, I wouldn't want to tackle this project on such a machine. I've looked, and it appears that there isn't any shop who deals with this on the west coast at all. Is it all on the east coast? If anyone in Phoenix, either a shop or privately, would tackle such a project, I'd certainly pay for your services. I tried Dynatronics, but they mainly deal with vintage reel to reel and stereos, and the one person they said who did deal with this was in his upper eighties and died, leaving no one at that business who could work on this. I'd really like to get this machine sounding nice, so can anyone help? Wow OK, didn't mean to go on so long for my first post back on this list in a few years, but once my typing fingers start going, they tend not to stop until the thoughts are conveyed. Thanks a lot. Matthew, apparently an old soul who loves old technology, at age 32. ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
[Phono-L] To George, who has phonograph needles.
Well thanks for those links. I'm sure that they are useful to others in the group as well. Off to web surf for over an hour or so now. Thanks a lot. Matthew
[Phono-L] Where can I get covers for 78s?
Hello, perhaps some might know on this list. Without having to join the list 78-l, is there a source for good covers and/or sleeves for 78s? I didn't notice any from Bags Unlimited, but maybe they would have the ten inch mylar outer dust sleeves. Thanks a lot. Matthew Tired of HotMail? Try Runbox. 1 gig of storage for a reasonable price. [Phono-L] Lewd CD Cylinder Story on NPR
Except they didn't give a link to the cd itself, which I had to Google. http://www.archeophone.com/product_info.php?products_id=90 Before I buy though, I'd better look through their catalog and see what else they have to offer.
