[Phono-L] Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah

2006-12-24 Thread albert
Merry Christmas everybody. I went through all my cylinders looking for a
Hanukah song but I didnt find one, but I listened to a bunch of Christmas
Cylinders. One in particular of Silent Night had all the obscure verses you
never hear. But what was interesting the common first verse was not on the
cylinder. Maybe back in those days the other verses were more popular, but
anyway, everybody have a nice Holiday. Al Menashe

[Phono-L] Merry Christmas!

2006-12-24 Thread Loran T. Hughes
Here's wishing each of you and your families a very, merry Christmas! I
hope Santa leaves something special for you under the tree this
evening.

Since I don't have any spare phonographs to send you folks, I'll give
you a list of my favorite links to free software that can make your
online experience much safer in the new year.

First, a new browser - Firefox. Use it in place of Internet Explorer
wherever you can and it will help protect you against most security
issues that plague IE. Firefox is getting rave reviews and can be
downloaded free at http://www.getfirefox.com

Next, a new mail client - Thunderbird. Not only will it save you from a
host of vulnerabilities in Outlook/Outlook Express, it will also weed
out the spam for you. Free at http://www.getthunderbird.com

Still insist on using Outlook? SpamPal will fix your spam problem there
too. Download free at http://www.spampal.org

Don't like paying for antivirus software? Try the free edition of AVG
antivirus at http://www.grisoft.com . A close second is ClamWin free
antivirus at http://www.clamwin.net .

Take care of your spyware problems with Ad-Aware at
http://www.lavasoftusa.com . An equivalent alternative is Spybot Search
& Destroy. Download it at
http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4
-10289035.html?tag=lst-0-2

Now, if you're still plinking around on AOL or other dialup services,
it's time to look into broadband. Check your local cable or telephone
provider to see if broadband is available in your area. It's getting
cheaper and the speed will amaze you. Just make sure your connection is
FIREWALLED, or you'll be in for a bucket load of bad news (viruses). If
you don't know how to firewall your computer, check with your family
geek :)

Last, if you've made it this far, I've got FIVE GMAIL ACCOUNTS to give
away! Just email me OFF LIST at lo...@oldcrank.com . Each GMail account
comes with 1 GB of mail storage and excellent spam filtering. First
come, first served.

Now, go get some eggnog. And play a record or two!
Loran

Hey, Loran

I live in a rural area, and dial-up is the only affordable service I can
get. Those of us who are AOL dial-up users know we are at the back of the
Internet whiz-bang line. Cheapshotting us is like smacking babies. I use a T-1
fiber-optic setup at work, and yes, its speed is addictive. I would love to
have
it at home, but it ain't happenin' right now.

I have tried Ad-Aware and Spybot. I think Ad-Aware might have a slight edge,
because of its more frequent updates. I have found Ad-Aware to be even more
effective than programs from name-brand companies, like McAfee. Ad-Aware,
from Lavasoft, is one of the best deals around.

The third and latest version of AOL 9.0 comes with antivirus software, and
an anti-spyware program. I think they offer a free firewall too. (I already
had a firewall when theirs came out, so I didn't get theirs). It is also rare
for me to get spam of any kind.

If any of you are still puttering around on the net without a firewall,
please listen to Loran and get one. If you get a firewall that records the
number
of attacks your machine has to fend off, you will be astounded by the number
of people who want to hack into your machine, and/or take it over. I
recently cleaned up a very slow machine used by students in the school where I
work.
The kids found a way to circumvent the machine's security software, go
online, and get to sites that were not "approved." (They are ingenious little
brats). The poor machine had 500+ spyware programs on it, and over 1,000
viruses.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Randy

For the dial up folks, you might want to check in your area for a Wireless
provider. Seems there are a lot of them but they
are small outfits and are low profile. I use the service here and it is
comperable to DSL in speed and cost.
