I have first crack at an Early Square Top Standard but need some advice. The
cabinet is in nice shape but the back quarter has been replaced many years ago,
it is a good match but it certainly detracts from the originality of the
machine. The mechanism itself needs some help. There is no reproducer and no
horn and the carriage will need to be replaced because half of it is
missing(cracked in half at the reproducer holder portion). The original sloted
black winding crank is with it, but the single spring motor will not wind up
and the crank just turns freely with an occasional springing noise like the
spring is broken inside theSpring case. Everything else looks intact, and
assuming what I listed above is the extent of the problems, and assuming that I
am interested in a no frills replacements (a C reproducer is just fine rather
then tracking down an original) can someone give me a good ballpark figure to
offer for this machine. These machines do not surface that often, and it would
be a nice addition to my Edison Collection given that it has the early Square
top case. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Bruce
I had an original lovely square top which I got on eBay for $475 with all
original parts, but it had a C reproducer and repro horn. I later bought
another with no reproducer and a repro horn for $500. Based on these
experiences about two and four years ago, I would start at $250 and bargain up
to maybe $350-$375. You may be able to get a complete case bottom later on.

$250 was my first thought also. Replacement parts and mechanical
repairs will bring it up to its normal value.
