I was able to get native mysql support by adding

	extension=mysql.so

to php.ini. So now mysql_connect() works

It doesn't appear you have the PHP MySQL functions installed. When you run 
phpinfo() you should get something like:

mysql
MySQL Supportenabled
Active Persistent Links1
Active Links1
Client API version3.23.39
MYSQL_MODULE_TYPEbuiltin
MYSQL_SOCKET/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock
MYSQL_INCLUDE
MYSQL_LIBS
